In view of the existing shortcomings in low automation calculation and non-intuition of stripping and mining engineering volume in surface mine, this paper introduces the Surfer to process spatial data of surface mine, builds the 3d visualization model of surface mine exploitation and calculates the stripping and mining volume. Comparing national standards with calculation of stripping and mining engineering volume based on Surfer by the experiment to prove that the precision reliability of Surfer application in calculation of surface stripping and mining engineering volume. © 2011 IEEE.

The intertwining of everyday life and computation, along with a new generation of inexpensive digital recording devices and storage facilities, is revolutionizing our ability to collect and analyze human activity data. Such ubiquitous data collection has an exciting potential to augment human cognition and radically improve information-intensive work. In this paper we introduce a system to aid the process of data collection and analysis during observational research by providing non-intrusive automatic capture of paper-based annotations. The system exploits current note-taking practices and incorporates digital pen technology. We describe the development, deployment and use of the system for interactive visualization and annotation of multiple stream of video and other types of time-based data. © 2011 ACM.

Building performance discourse has traditionally focused on the evaluation of a specific design. However, to increase the accuracy and ongoing validity of performance analysis, the building science community has come to understand the value of extending the focus beyond design to include the full building life-cycle. In the context of commercial office buildings, building performance analysis has been centered on the heating and air-conditioning system resulting in building instrumentation primarily serving large zones defined at design time. While this coarse level of metering and control may serve the needs of the building, a finer level of detail will be needed to better serve occupants with improved comfort levels. To move toward a more occupant-centric system, the instrumentation of office furniture in the form of sensor-enabled cubicles is proposed. By considering a cubicle to be at the occupant scale, a higher level of data sampling, sufficient to support detailed building performance visualization, is suggested. To this end, an overview of a prototype system that includes data sensing, data storage, and data representation to enhance the state of building performance visualization is presented.

Wildfire is a constant risk due to its danger on both human and natural resources so modeling and simulation is an important tool to understand and forecast this phenomenon. A basic element of any simulation model is to define a way to store, compare and exchange observation and model results. Without a clear and standardized data structure, results and observations lack usability, inter-comparability and expressiveness. In this article we propose a well defined data format and API that can represent observation and model outputs. It provides a convenient way to transform fire data and can export any simulated or observed fire into KML for easy visualization. This specification enables the implementation of an experimental frame that is independent of simulation code. A database of more than 600 fires has been compiled using the API, enabling large scale reanalysis for any code that can be adapted to the proposed experimental frame.

While monitoring and analysis of bio-signals are essential in today's medical diagnostics, it is gaining even more importance with modern computer systems allowing the use of complex real-time algorithms and analysis of huge amounts of data. To ease development of such algorithms, a tool is needed which allows the mobile long-term recording of signals at reasonably high frequencies and at the same time provides a framework for a straightforward implementation of all kinds of real-time monitoring, analysis and visualization algorithms. The Measure tool developed at femu, RWTH Aachen University, consisting of a mobile data logging device and an easily extendable PC software, addresses this problem. The system has been evaluated in a case study analyzing gastrointestinal motility. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to adapt to the trend of visualization of satellite mission, building a real time visual simulation platform is needed. Based on Satellite Tool Kit (STK) and MATLAB / SIMULINK, the Displayer Terminal written by VC++ through the use of STK / Connect interface technology and STK / X embedded technology was build, as well as the real time satellite mission analysis simulation model which was created by SIMULINK blocks through the use of Real-Time Windows Target technology. The data Processing Server written by VC++ received the real time satellite mission outputs, made them to be STK/Connect commands, and sent them to visualize in the Displayer Terminals. Then an integrated visual environment for satellite mission design and analysis was formed. The Platform can be used to optimize and verify the satellite mission.

Tabular data are pervasive. Although tables often describe multivariate data without explicit network semantics, it may be advantageous to explore the data modeled as a graph or network for analysis. Even when a given table design conveys some static network semantics, analysts may want to look at multiple networks from different perspectives, at different levels of abstraction, and with different edge semantics. We present a system called Ploceus that offers a general approach for performing multi-dimensional and multi-level network-based visual analysis on multivariate tabular data. Powered by an underlying relational algebraic framework, Ploceus supports flexible construction and transformation of networks through a direct manipulation interface, and integrates dynamic network manipulation with visual exploration for a seamless analytic experience. © 2011 IEEE.

The study of complex activities such as scientific production and software development often require modeling connections among heterogeneous entities including people, institutions and artifacts. Despite numerous advances in algorithms and visualization techniques for understanding such social networks, the process of constructing network models and performing exploratory analysis remains difficult and time-consuming. In this paper we present Orion, a system for interactive modeling, transformation and visualization of network data. Orion's interface enables the rapid manipulation of large graphs - including the specification of complex linking relationships - using simple drag-and-drop operations with desired node types. Orion maps these user interactions to statements in a declarative workflow language that incorporates both relational operators (e.g., selection, aggregation and joins) and network analytics (e.g., centrality measures). We demonstrate how these features enable analysts to flexibly construct and compare networks in domains such as online health communities, academic collaboration and distributed software development. © 2011 IEEE.

Outliers are special observations or extraordinary cases in the available data which deviate so much from other observations so as to arouse suspicions that they were generated by a different mechanism. Outliers detected can be used to identify special or extraordinary or fraudulent cases in day to day transactions. Outlier detection can be used to identify the noise in the data and these detected outliers have to be removed to improve data quality. Outlier Detection can be used for Traffic analysis, Credit Card Fraud Detection. We applied Outlier Detection to Traffic data set for identifying the outlier stations on the highway. Detected outlier stations represent abnormalities in the traffic sensors data. This information is used by us to identify the faulty traffic sensors located at the highway stations. We have provided two dimensional visualization of the outliers which can be used for analyzing the data in an efficient manner. Traffic Management becomes easier when the abnormal traffic sensors identified at the corresponding outlier stations are identified. The method used here is a Statistic Approach. This technique compares every location to its neighbors using the Statistic. The Statistic is calculated to identify whether the data generated at a highway traffic station sensor is abnormal or not. This technique can be used efficiently to identify the outliers. This method can be easily applied to very large datasets as compared to existing conventional approaches. Copyright © 2011 ACM.
