Recent research in genomics and biomedical studies has shown a relationship between heredity, mutations in certain genes and the corresponding probabilities of developing certain cancers. In this study we looked at breast and ovarian cancer distributions across all states and counties in the United States over time. We describe briefly Weave, our Web-based analysis and visualization Environment and use it to explore these cancers and present interactive animated visualizations of family hereditary patterns and genetic distributions, not only for these cancers, but also for other life-threatening cancers and related health indicators. We also show how Weave can be used to integrate other diverse epidemiological data, in particular obesity, and explore its relationship with cancer data.

Today weather forecasts assist in the preparation of roads during the winter season to avoid accidents resulting from snow, rain and slipperiness. As with any weather forecast there is always a search for improvement. One way to do this is by verifying the forecasted parameters with the actual weather observed in the forecasted area. To facilitate identification of significant trends and patterns within weather data we have developed an application based on interactive information visualization techniques. The application was created in close collaboration with domain experts from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and initial feedback from a performed user study shows that interactive visualization speeds up the analysis process as well as increases flexibility compared to currently used manual methods.

Interactive visualization of very large data sets remains a challenging problem to the visualization community. One promising solution involves using adaptive resolution representations of the data. In this model, important regions of data are identified using reconstructive error analysis and are shown in higher detail. During the visualization, regions with higher error are rendered with high resolution data, while areas of low error are rendered at a lower resolution. We have developed a new dynamic adaptive resolution rendering algorithm along with software support libraries. These libraries are designed to extend the VisIt visualization environment by adding support for adaptive resolution data. VisIt supports domain decomposition of data, which we use to define our AR representation. We show that with this model, we achieve performance gains while maintaining error tolerances specified by the scientist.

visualization of large-scale high dimensional data is highly valuable for dataanalysis facilitating scientific discovery in many fields. We present PubChemBrowse, a customized visualization tool for cheminformatics research. It provides a novel 3D data point browser that displays complex properties of massive data on commodity clients. As in Geographic Information System browsers for Earth and Environment data, chemical compounds with similar properties are nearby in the browser. PubChemBrowse is built around in-house high performance parallel Multi-dimensional scaling and Generative topographic mapping services and supports fast interaction with an external property database. These properties can be overlaid on 3D mapped compound space or queried for individual points. We prototype the integration with Chem2Bio2RDF system using SPARQL endpoint to access over 20 publicly accessible bioinformatics databases. We describe our design and implementation of the integrated PubChemBrowse application and outline its use in drug discovery. We describe a meta-notation devised to express the major structural characteristics in widely-used datavisualizations. The meta-notation consists of unary and binary operators that can be combined to represent a visualization. Capturing structural features of a visualization, our meta-notation can be applied to match or compare two visualizations at a conceptual level. For example, a user's request for a visualization can be compared with visualization tools' presentation capabilities. The design of the operators is discussed as we present their underlying concepts and show examples of their use. To illustrate how expressive the meta-notation is, we explore some commonly-used datavisualizations. A benefit of our approach is that the operators define a set of required capabilities on which a visualization system can be organized. Thus, the meta-notation can be used to design a system that interconnects various datavisualization tools by sending and receiving visualization requests between them.

The use of timeline to visualize time-series data is one of the most intuitive and commonly used methods, and is used for widely-used applications such as stock market datavisualization, and tracking of poll data of election candidates over time. While useful, these timeline visualizations are lacking in contextual information of events which are related or cause changes in the data. We have developed a system that enhances timeline visualization with display of relevant news events and their corresponding images, so that users can not only see the changes in the data, but also understand the reasons behind the changes. We have also conducted a user study to test the effectiveness of our ideas.

The overwhelming quantities and complexity of these data present a challenge for immunologists trying to interpret results, extract useful information, and derive new knowledge. visualization plays an increasingly important role in the process of analyzing and understanding immunological data. We employed two visualization modules - heat map and stack graph, to be embedded in MULTIPRED2, a computational system for antigenic analysis and support of large-scale vaccine studies. We have described two complementary modules that display complex information on antigenic targets from proteins. The heat map enables visualization of large number of HLA variants, their groupings within the supertypes, and identification of antigenic regions within a query protein sequence. The stack graph is an interactive tool that presents predicted immunogenicity of a query protein across multiple HLA supertypes at human population level. The stack graph enables zooming in and out facilitating visualization at desired level of detail. Both visualization tools present a large amount of information in a single graphical display. The goal of visualization tools is to help immunologists and vaccine researchers to gain rapid insight into the data using comprehensive but clear graphic representation and summarization.

Formal concept lattices and rough set theory are two kinds of complementary mathematical tools for dataanalysis and data processing. The paper proposes the method of constructiong ontology nodes information system based on rough formal concept analysis in order to constructing the ontology model of knowledge management. Experimental studies are done with rough set and FCA in constructing the numbers of ontology nodes. Filtering data is an essential process in a drilldown analysis of large data sets. Filtering can be necessary for several reasons. The main objective for filters is to uncover the relevant subsets of a dataset. Another, equally relevant goal is to reduce a dataset to dimensions to which either visualization or algorithmic analysis techniques scale. However, with multiple filters applied and possibly even logically combined, it becomes difficult for users to judge the effects of a filter chain. In this paper we present a simple, yet effective way to interactively visualize a sequence of filters and logical combinations of these. Such a visualized filter-pipeline allows analysts to easily judge the effect of every single filter and also their combination on the data set under investigation and therefore, leads to a faster and more efficient workflow. We also present an implementation of the proposed technique in an information visualization framework for the life sciences. The technique, however, could be employed in many other information visualization contexts as well.

This research discusses a novel application of ternary plots to the visualization of network traffic data. These plots prove to be enormously effective at identifying anomalous network activity and can be valuable in monitoring network activity much more efficiently than can be done with existing techniques. The visualization was implemented in our existing visualization infrastructure to reduce development time. Testing was performed on actual network traffic data collected from a local network. Multiple anomalies were easily identifiable within the data set without any prior knowledge as to the contents of the test file. This paper discusses the ternary plot and its application to network traffic data, the formulas needed to calculate and display ternary coordinates, and the basic architecture for the visualization implementation.
