Social network analysis has received much attention across disciplines. Recently, historians have begun to complicate their understanding of networks and are increasingly using visualisation to elucidate tangible and intangible information in their data sets. Current approaches make use of static social network analysis and whilst they provide a number of tools to explore a social network, they are unable to provide temporal analysis. This paper presents Matrixify, a practical visual application for the exploratory temporal analysis of social networks for historians and others not familiar with visual representations of data. This approach aims to deconstruct the complexity of social networks to provide a temporal analysis to answer a key problem in historical studies, that of 'analysis of change over time'. In this way, historians are able to identify real relationships in their data sets;actors in contact at a particular point in time and shown over time. The case study presented in this paper demonstrates the applicability of the approach in interdisciplinary studies.

This paper proposes a new method of creating 3D visual data cubes for high volume/dimension OLAP data analysis with intuitive region selection. Previous methods construct data cubes directly from a data warehouse and build table format cubes with multi-dimensional attributes, in order to specify target ranges for analysis. However, it is a difficult task to select appropriate attributes and their ranges from high cardinality of dimensions with hierarchical structure. The new method reduces the number of dimensions according to the levels of relationship, then confines analysis target ranges with intuitive 3D graphical interface to build an analysis target cube. © 2011 IEEE.

Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) has been widely applied in brain computer interface (BCI) systems. The amplitude and phase features of SSVEP were commonly extracted by Fourier analysis method from single-channel EEG data. In the multichannel case, canonical correlation analysis (CCA) has been utilized for the analysis of frequency coding SSVEP. This paper presents the analysis of phase coding SSVEP using CCA. The phase coding scheme consists of six targets flickering at 10Hz, with a 60 degrees phase difference between any two sequential targets. For each target, 20 trials of 8s EEG signal were acquired. Using CCA, we achieve channel selection and extraction of phase features;a classification accuracy of above 80% is obtained, with the length of the time window up to 4s. The results demonstrate that phase coding SSVEP analysis based on CCA is feasible.

Malware spread via Internet is a great security threat, so studying their behavior is important to identify and classify them. Using SSDT hooking we can obtain malware behavior by running it in a controlled environment and capturing interactions with the target operating system regarding file, process, registry, network and mutex activities. This generates a chain of events that can be used to compare them with other known malware. In this paper we present a simple approach to convert malware behavior into activity graphs and show some visualization techniques that can be used to analyze malware behavior, individually or grouped.

Arrays CGH make possible the realization of tests on patients for the detection of mutations in chromosomal regions. Detecting these mutations allows to carry out diagnoses and to complete studies of sequencing in relevant regions of the DNA. The analysis process of arrays CGH requires the use of mechanisms that facilitate the data processing by specialized personnel since traditionally, a segmentation process is needed and starting from the segmented data, a visual analysis of the information is carried out for the selection of relevant segments. In this study a CBR system is presented as a supporting system for the extraction of relevant information in arrays CGH that facilitates the process of analysis and its interpretation.

Medical care, particularly for chronic diseases, accumulates a huge amount of patient data over extensive time periods that needs to be accessed and analyzed accordingly. Information visualization methods hold great promises in turning data deluge into improved quality of medical care. Yet, patient data management systems mostly provide documents, form-based displays, or static visualizations. We present a design study of an interactive visualization system, called VisuExplore, to support long-term care and medical analysis of patients with chronic diseases. VisuExplore offers interaction techniques for effective exploration of time-oriented data and employs simple, but intuitive visualization techniques. It was developed in close cooperation with physicians. We conducted two user studies with nine physicians and 16 students, which indicate that our design is useful and appropriate for particular tasks. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin.

Computer aided surgery is by sure a set of technologies that provide a real support to surgeons during their operational job. This includes - but it is not limited to - novel sensors and systems and software for data analysis and visualization. In particular the use of intraoperational probes is eased if the position of the probe within the operational field can be exactly calculated by the supporting software. Commercial systems have already been developed for this purpose but their complexity and cost reduces their usability for the majority of probes. This paper presents a simple approach to calculate the probe position within the operational field that requires a minimum cost.

This paper provides a discussion and analysis of methodological issues encountered during a scholarly impact and bibliometric study within the field of Computer Science (TRECVid Text Retrieval and Evaluation conference, Video Retrieval Evaluation). The purpose of this paper is to provide a reflection and analysis of the methods used to provide useful information and guidance for those who may wish to undertake similar studies, and is of particular relevance for the academic disciplines which have publication and citation norms that may not perform well using traditional tools. Scopus and Google Scholar are discussed and a detailed comparison of the effects of different search methods and cleaning methods within and between these tools for subject and author analysis is provided. The additional database capabilities and usefulness of 'Scopus More' in addition to 'Scopus General' are discussed and evaluated. Scopus paper coverage is found to favourably compare with Google Scholar but Scholar consistently has superior performance at finding citations to those papers. These additional citations significantly increase the citation totals and also change the relative ranking of papers. Publish or Perish, a software wrapper for Google Scholar, is also examined and its limitations and some possible solutions are described. data cleaning methods, including duplicate checks, expert domain checking of bibliographic data, and content checking of retrieved papers, are compared and their relative effects on paper and citation count discussed. Google Scholar and Scopus are also compared as tools for collecting bibliographic data for visualizations of developing trends and, owing to the comparative ease of collecting abstracts, Scopus is found far more effective.

Three-dimensional (3D) terrain visualization is the main content of 3D GIS. As a branch of computer graphics, it is a subject about the display, simplification, simulation of digital terrain model (DTM) or digital elevation model (DEM). It can simulate 2D image of 3D terrain fast and realistically. Through the combination of high-resolution remote sensing images and DEM, 3D terrain visualization can reproduce highly realistic terrain, which has become a research hot spot. Mountain Taishan, a famous scenic area, boasts not only its splendid culture but also its special landform. It is significant to visualize its terrain with 3D technology. Firstly, on basis of dissertating the related concept and function, the main flow is studied and planned, which points out the data sources and processing steps. Secondly, by using available remote sensing image (ETM), DEM (SRTM) and digitalized vector data of geographic elements, we created terrain model in TIN generation algorithm within the data platform ArcGIS, and achieved dynamic display of 3D scene, information query and spatial analysis. The results show that slopes in Mountain Taishan mostly range from 10 to 30 degrees, and the proportion of sunny slope weighs larger. Finally, the research achievement and its applicability are discussed. The research results will be helpful for the tourism planning and development, agricultural production, and geological investigation in Taishan area. © 2011 IEEE.

From field-scale measurements to global climate simulations and remote sensing, the growing body of very large and long time series Earth science data are increasingly difficult to analyze, visualize, and interpret. data mining, information theoretic, and machine learning techniques-such as cluster analysis, singular value decomposition, block entropy, Fourier and wavelet analysis, phase-space reconstruction, and artificial neural networks-are being applied to problems of segmentation, feature extraction, change detection, model-data comparison, and model validation. The size and complexity of Earth science data exceed the limits of most analysis tools and the capacities of desktop computers. New scalable analysis and visualization tools, running on parallel cluster computers and supercomputers, are required to analyze data of this magnitude. This workshop will demonstrate how data mining techniques are applied in the Earth sciences and describe innovative computer science methods that support analysis and discovery in the Earth sciences.
