We analysed multi-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings during a spatial Working Memory (WM) task in order to test the hypothesis that segmentation of perception and action is present when the visual stimulus has been stored in spatial WM. To detect the interactions between different regions of the brain depending on the task we employed both Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) and the concept of Granger Causality (GC). Our computational analysis supports evidence that the Parietal Cortex (PC) is involved in WM processing.

This paper presents an associated visualization model for the nonlinear and multivariate ecological data prediction processes. Estimating impacts of changes in environmental conditions on biological entities is one of the required ecological data analyses. For the causality analysis, it is desirable to explain complex relationships between influential environmental data and responsive biological data through the process of ecological data predictions. The proposed Self-Organizing Map Tree utilizes Self-Organizing Maps as nodes of a tree to make association among different ecological domain data and to observe the prediction processes. Nonlinear data relationships and possible prediction outcomes are inspected through the processes of the SOMT that shows a good predictability of the target output for the given inputs.

If building performance simulations are to fully benefit from increasing quantities of sensor data, subsets of large datasets must be efficiently extracted at varying levels of detail. A key issue with time series data is that relevant time scales vary by orders of magnitude depending on the desired analysis. To ensure that a subset of a time series is available when needed at an appropriate resolution, lossy compression can be applied in real time as data is acquired. We propose an algorithm that compresses a piecewise constant time series by merging segments within a sliding time window. This procedure tends to preserve prominent edges and spikes. While building control system dashboards and simulation tools often average data over fixed time periods (e.g. hourly averages), the proposed method achieves lower errors for the same compression ratio and provides better support for signal processing, datavisualization, and simulation.

In many experiments, the data points collected live in high-dimensional observation spaces, yet can be assigned a set of labels or parameters. In electrophysiological recordings, for instance, the responses of populations of neurons generally depend on mixtures of experimentally controlled parameters. The heterogeneity and diversity of these parameter dependencies can make visualization and interpretation of such data extremely difficult. Standard dimensionality reduction techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) can provide a succinct and complete description of the data, but the description is constructed independent of the relevant task variables and is often hard to interpret. Here, we start with the assumption that a particularly informative description is one that reveals the dependency of the high-dimensional data on the individual parameters. We show how to modify the loss function of PCA so that the principal components seek to capture both the maximum amount of variance about the data, while also depending on a minimum number of parameters. We call this method demixed principal component analysis (dPCA) as the principal components here segregate the parameter dependencies. We phrase the problem as a probabilistic graphical model, and present a fast Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. We demonstrate the use of this algorithm for electrophysiological data and show that it serves to demix the parameter-dependence of a neural population response.
