In the paper, a general overview of the Copernicus system is given. Copernicus is a tool for computer-aided diagnosis of mental disorders based on personality inventories. The tool was designed for the Java platform. There have been selected and implemented different quantitative groups of methods useful for differential interprofile diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to present the capabilities of the software tool created for effective and specialized analysis of psychometric data to support psychologists in diagnostic decision making.
We report on the design and the collection of a multi-modal data corpus for cognitive acoustic scene analysis. Sounds are generated by stationary and moving sources (people), that is by omni-directional speakers mount...

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is more and more applied in the mission of AUV terrain reconnaissance. At the same time, sensors especial oceanography measuring sensors data's processing and utilizing is important to the oceanography research and resource exploitation usages of AUV. This paper discusses methods of 3D terrain vector modeling and its visualizing based on multi-beam sonar. In this paper, sensors data are used to provide the absolute coordinate points of terrain. An improved Delaunay triangulation modeling algorithm is designed to set up the vector model of terrain. And the visual 3D model is demonstrated on the platform of Visual C++ and OpenGL, and it could be applied to continuous data processing and analysis for oceanographic terrain reconnaissance.
An ocean of data is available on the web. From this ocean of data, information can in theory be extracted and used by analysts for detecting emergent trends (trend spotting). However, to do this manually is a daunting...

The electricity distribution regulation and efficiency benchmarking practice in Finland has drawn attention because of its controversial regulatory scheme and arguably efficient electricity distribution sector. This study uses a computational intelligence tool, i.e., Self-Organizing Map (SOM), in the context of electricity distribution efficiency performance visualization. A SOM-model has been built based on collected data for 2001-2004. It allows the reader to discriminate between the Finnish DSOs' differing operating circumstances. Through clustering and visualization, an overall perspective of the efficiency performance of the DSOs in 2001-2004 is rendered. In addition, such a visualization approach connects the DSO's efficiency performance to its respective operating characteristics, which is otherwise not straightforwardly indicated by only studying efficiency scores. This application provides evidence that visual data mining with the SOM as a complementary approach in electricity distribution regulation and efficiency benchmarking has the potential to be expended to other regulatory practices (e.g., yardstick regulation).

Business intelligence, e-science and Web mining are rapidly growing sources of extreme large scale problems. We demonstrate that emerging means of supercomputing-for-the-masses, distributed or many-core architectures may provide feasible and affordable solution to many applications. We give a brief overview in four areas: Web data processing to federate Future Internet Research (FIRE) facilities in a recently started project;Image retrieval over tasks of the PASCAL and PROMISE networks of excellence;Efficiency of distributed data warehouses for log processing and entity resolution;Network analysis, visualization and navigation, in the VAST Challenges and European security projects. We pass beyond existing technologies in implementing new frameworks, combining distributed and multicore technologies, and seeking new, breakthrough applications in an interdisciplinary research with application partners. This paper presents a visual analytics tool to understand the emergence and structure of the nanotechnology industry. According to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the global nanotechnology industry is expected to grow to $1 trillion in 2010 and drive dramatic innovation and wealth creation in industries as diverse as energy, computing and biotechnology. Nanotech entrepreneurs, analysts and investors alike need tools to understand the emerging structure of the industry because firm competitive positions in the industry impact ventures' survival, growth and profitability. Particularly, nanotech ventures compete from different initial "strategic footprints" in the industry which ease or complicate entry into new growth businesses. In fact, the emergence of the nanotechnology industry is the story of interweaving with-and penetration into-different adjoining industries. Exploiting the world's largest database on consumer-focused nanotechnology products, this paper demonstrates a visual analytics tool, Emergent, that can show the emerging structure of the industry and ventures' varying strategic footprints within this forming multi-industry terrain. The tool is interactive, scalable, and adaptable to relational data from other industries. Business applications of Emergent include industry analysis, strategic planning and entrepreneurial opportunity identification.
