We present We Feel Fine, an emotional search engine and web-based artwork whose mission is to collect the world's emotions to help people better understand themselves and others. We Feel Fine continuously crawls blogs, microblogs, and social networking sites, extracting sentences that include the words "I feel" or "I am feeling", as well as the gender, age, and location of the people authoring those sentences. The We Feel Fine search interface allows users to search or browse over the resulting sentence-level index, asking questions such as "How did young people in Ohio feel when Obama was elected?" While most research in sentiment analysis focuses on algorithms for extraction and classification of sentiment about given topics, we focus instead on building an interface that provides an engaging means of qualitative exploration of emotional data, and a flexible data collection and serving architecture that enables an ecosystem of dataanalysis applications. We use our observations on the usage of We Feel Fine to suggest a class of visualizations called Experiential datavisualization, which focus on immersive item-level interaction with data. We also discuss the implications of such visualizations for crowdsourcing qualitative research in the social sciences. Copyright 2011 ACM.

Statistics Netherlands produces statistics about the economic activity in The Netherlands. These statistics are based on survey data and administrative sources, such as value added tax (VAT). A recent trend in the production of official statistics is to use a top-down analysis, which means that analysts first analyze high level aggregated data, and then zoom in on a more detailed level when necessary. In this paper, we discuss how treemap visualizations can be used for this top-down approach. We use comparison treemaps and density treemaps. Finally, we introduce a method to visualize confidence intervals in treemaps.

There is an increasing focus on implementing ocean observing systems to deliver information about how coastal systems are responding to change in the oceans. While advances are being made in collecting data, from automated sensors, sensor networks and so on, the same advances have yet to be made in the analysis and extraction of information from the data collected. There are advances in computing, modeling and visualization that can help but these require a new paradigm in how the observational data is stored, accessed and managed. This paper describes a services based cloud-computing architecture for the storage, integration and analysis of marine observational data from two observing systems;one on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the other near Phuket in Thailand.

Web 2.0 provides new and valuable tools to the world of medicine, and Social Network analysis (SNA) can provide insight into how these communication networks function. This paper explores the potential for SNA methods to explain the communication patterns in the Pediatric Pain Mailing List, including identifying content experts and isolating potential subgroups of interest. These results are incorporated into VECoN, a novel network visualization designed to improve the standard network exploration process by presenting the network graphically and incorporating SNA statistics into the presentation.

Many learning algorithms have been developed to solve various problems. Machine learning practitioners must use their knowledge of the merits of the algorithms they know to decide which to use for each task. This process often raises questions such as: (1) If performance is poor after trying certain algorithms, which should be tried next? (2) Are some learning algorithms the same in terms of actual task classification? (3) Which algorithms are most different from each other? (4) How different? (5) Which algorithms should be tried for a particular problem? This research uses the COD (Classifier Output Difference) distance metric for measuring how similar or different learning algorithms are. The COD quantifies the difference in output behavior between pairs of learning algorithms. We construct a distance matrix from the individual COD values, and use the matrix to show the spectrum of differences among families of learning algorithms. Results show that individual algorithms tend to cluster along family and functional lines. Our focus, however, is on the structure of relationships among algorithm families in the space of algorithms, rather than on individual algorithms. A number of visualizations illustrate these results. The uniform numerical representation of COD data lends itself to human visualization techniques.

Hydropower station is one of key energy construction projects in china. The hydro-mechanical component is one of the core parts of the hydropower station. Therefore, the importance of hydro-condition monitoring becomes even more conspicuous in hydropower station. In this present study, the hardware of hydropower station hydraulic monitoring system was re-designed and integrated through researching hydro-determination theory and method of the hydropower station, using ADAM modules; At the same time, by using development tool C++ and assembly language, a 16-channel data acquisition and visualization operations hydro-monitoring system was completed by implementing the functions of acquisition, calibration, analysis, processing for the software system. Finally, the entire monitoring system was applied on Tianqiao hydropower, and the result indicated that this system might be a better method in monitoring results. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. We present ChronoViz, a system to aid annotation, visualization, navigation, and analysis of multimodal time-coded data. Exploiting interactive paper technology, ChronoViz also integrates researcher's paper notes into the composite data set. Researchers can navigate data in multiple ways, taking advantage of synchronized visualizations and annotations. The goal is to decrease the time and effort required to analyze multimodal data by providing direct indexing and flexible mechanisms to control data exploration.
