Due to the recent wave of bank failures, stress tests have been conducted on banks within the European Union. The stress tests, however, only consider the adequacy of a bank's capital ratios, whereas the general financial performance of individual banks is disregarded. In this paper, we use the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to perform a visual multidimensional and temporal financial performance analysis of European banks. We address several different problems concerning financial performance analysis. We deal with the problem of selecting suitable financial ratios by performing dimensionality reduction using PCA. We also deal with difficult data using outlier trimming and normalization techniques, and use the SOM for imputing missing values. We use a decision-framework for choosing the final model, based upon a set of map and clustering quality measures. Finally, we implement a second-level fuzzified Ward clustering for visualization purposes and for assessing the crispness of the solution. The result is a visual SOM model for financial performance analysis of European banks.

Yangtze River is the most important \ldGolden Waterway\rd in China. With increasing attention being given to infrastructure construction of Golden waterway, the safety of inland water transport is becoming important. This article explores how advanced information technology can be used for identification and visualization of hazardous locations along Middle reach area of the Yangtze River using thousands of collisions and groundings data, which are considered to occur dependently of ship channel configuration, vessel traffic, and geographic location, from Changjiang Maritime Safety Administration (CMSA). The GIS provides a means of managing data by its spatial attributes and proves valuable in validating accident locations and understanding how characteristics of each location may have contributed to accident causation and consequences. © 2011 ASCE.

Ever increasing numbers and attributes of the hardware, software, and contents require robust lookup system that scales with the size and complexities of services and applications of Future Internet. The lookup function, as a fundamental building block of network system, becomes more crucial than ever to ensure high quality of services. In this paper, we investigate a lookup system design using replicas and caches in a networked cloud environment. The proposed design would then be evaluated in terms of key requirements such as query response time, bandwidth, and storage. A logical analysis and visualization of data sets are discussed to support our design decisions. The lookup system which meets performance requirements, given by a service provider, is modeled as an integer linear programming problem. We discuss our solution approaches, including a newly proposed heuristic method demonstrating reasonable performance and near optimal solutions, and impact and tradeoffs of various design parameters. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to the critical role of communication in project teams, capturing and analyzing developer design notes and conversations for use as performance predictors is becoming increasing important as software development processes become more asynchronous. Current prediction methods require human Subject Matter Experts (SME) to laboriously examine and rank user content along various categories such as participation and the information they express. SEREBRO is an integrated courseware tool that captures social and development artifacts automatically and provides real time rewards, in the form of badges and titles, indicating a user's progress towards predefined goals using a variety of automated assessment measures. The tool allows for instructor visualization, involvement, and feedback in the ongoing projects and provides avenues for the instructor to adapt or adjust project scope or individual role assignments based on past or current individual performance levels. This paper evaluates and compares the use of two automated SEREBRO measures with SME content-based analysis and work product grades as predictors of individual performance. data is collected from undergraduate software engineering teams using SEREBRO, whose automated measures of content and contribution perform as well as SME ratings and grades to suggest individual performance can be predicted in real-time.

There is a vast and ever increasing amount of data on the Earth's interconnected energy and hydrological systems, and yet one challenge persists: increasing the usefulness of these data for, and thus their use by, the geospatial communities. The Hydrology data and Information Services Center (HDISC), part of the Goddard Earth Sciences DISC, has continually worked to better understand the hydrological data needs of the geospatial end users, to thus better able to bridge the gap between NASA data and the geospatial communities. This paper will cover some of the hydrological data sets available from HDISC, and the various tools and services developed for data searching, data subsetting, format conversion, online visualization and analysis, interoperable access, etc., to facilitate the integration of NASA hydrological data by end users. The NASA Goddard data analysis and visualization system, Giovanni, is described. Two case examples of user-customized data services are given, involving the EPA BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating point & Non-point Sources) project and the CUAHSI Hydrologic Information System, with the common requirement of on-the-fly retrieval of long duration time series for a geographical point.

Network science is an emerging research area focused on developing general network-based approaches for studying phenomena across a range of fields from social science to biology. Techniques from network science include network analysis, network modeling and visualization. A key difficulty facing networks science is data acquisition. Network data must often be mined and converted from non-network sources, which is often a laborious and error prone process. In this paper, we present a simplified approach for extracting networks from Linked data. These extracted networks can then be analyzed through network analysis algorithms, and the results of these analyses can be published back as Linked data. The aim is to provide a corpus of well-described networks for use in network science. We describe LinkeddataLens, an implementation of this framework that uses the Wings workflow system to represent multi-step network extraction and analysis processes. Additionally, we describe initial networks that have been extracted and characterized with this framework.

In this paper, we discuss the use of analytic trails to support the needs of business users when conducting visual data analysis, focusing particularly on the aspects of analytic provenance, asynchronous collaboration, and reuse of analyses. We present a prototype implementation of analytic trail technology as part of Smarter Decisions - a web-based visual analytic tool, with the goal of helping business users derive insights from structured and unstructured data. To understand the value and shortcomings of trails in supporting visual analytic tasks in business environments, we performed a user study with 21 participants. While the majority of participants found trails to be useful for capturing and understanding the provenance of an analysis, they viewed trails as more valuable for personal use rather than for communicating the analytic process to other people as part of a collaboration. Study results also indicate that rich search mechanisms for easily finding relevant trails (or portions of a trail) is critical to the successful adaptation and reuse of existing saved trails.

Intelligent functions of Smart Power Management System can also be modified via wireless channels to cell phones or other mobile devices for maintenance staff. Real time signals of abnormal system indications can be sent out to field maintenance and grid operation as required. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are designed to support the management, manipulation, analysis, and modeling of spatial data. Water supply pipeline network is a system which has a large of spatial attribute data. In order to improve the managing and working efficiency, the paper proposed a new method for designing the long distance pipeline based on GIS. Seamless integration of GIS platform, hydraulic model of long distance pipeline is built which is base of hydraulic calculation. The model is based on building pipeline concise model dynamic. The hydraulic calculation is to guarantee the authenticity of the model which can help to simulate the whole system status and analyze the condition of long distance pipeline. The pressure and safety coefficient models of long pipeline based on GIS can help operator to know the details of every segment in the long distance pipeline system. The method locates the weakness of long distance pipeline and displayed impressively on GIS platform. All the technologies strengthen the security of the pipeline design, improve the accuracy of hydraulic calculation, and help operators to analyze the long distance pipeline condition by spatial visualization. The example shows that the method is reasonable, effective, and has been applied to practical project.
