Dynamic multiphase flow behavior inside a mixed flow electrical submersible pump (ESP) has been studied experimentally and theoretically for the first time. The overall objectives of this study are to determine the flow patterns and bubble behavior inside the ESP and to predict the operational conditions that cause surging. An experimental facility has been designed and constructed to enable flow pattern visualization inside the second stage of a real ESP. Special high-speed instrumentation was selected to acquire visual flow dynamics and bubble size measurements inside the impeller channel. Experimental data were acquired utilizing two types of tests (surging test and bubble diameter measurement test) to completely evaluate the pump behavior at different operational conditions. A similarity analysis performed for single-phase flow inside the pump concluded that viscosity effects are negligible compared to the centrifugal field effects for rotational speeds higher than 600 rpm. Therefore, the two-phase flow tests were performed for a rotational speeds of 600, 900, 1200, and 1500 rpm. Results showed formation of a large gas pocket at the pump intake during surging conditions. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4004966]

3D Web GIS is being increasingly used as a very effective tool in disaster management over the last years. It is especially useful in different areas of flood management such as affected area delineation, better visualization of the affected areas, and emergency operations. Web GIS with 3D visualization capability plays a vital role for detailed flood analysis and emergency response. It provides accurate and timely information to the disaster managers and relevant organizations during emergency period for efficient management of disasters. In this paper, the authors present a 3D web-based GIS application for flood modeling and emergency responses with a case study on the Don Valley watershed, Toronto, Canada. Under different water surface elevations, the different flooding scenarios are predicted. Additionally, the damaged road infrastructure and land uses are estimated. Finally, the authors publish and visualize the processed data and information collected from the previous analysis in a 3D web environment.

This document focuses on the case that optimization direction is hard to determine in aerodynamic optimization processes, and proposes an intelligent approach based on ANN learning, followed by result visualization using data mining technology. It can not only help visualize the optimization process (qualitative analysis), but also determine the optimization direction (quantitative calculation), which can save time of frequent CFD calculation and obviously improve efficiency in aerodynamic optimization.

The problem of representing RDF data using charts, dashboards, maps and so on has become pressing, in particular to prove the value of the Semantic Web to enhance the analysis of business data. State of the art solutions focus on mapping query results to a specific chart type or view and then manually writing the procedure that creates the final dashboard, but whenever a different visualization model is required, the mapping process needs to be repeated. In this paper we propose a semi-automatic approach that generates various charts from SPARQL queries over data represented as RDF graphs, we introduce and describe the generic approach and present a use case scenario in the context of service monitoring.

This paper describes a procedure based on the use of manifold learning algorithms to visualize periodic -or nearly periodic- time series produced by processes with different underlying dynamics. The proposed approach is done in two steps: a feature extraction stage, where a set of descriptors in the frequency domain is extracted, and a manifold learning stage that finds low dimensional structures in the feature space and obtains projections on a low dimensional space for visualization. This approach is applied on vibration data of an electromechanical rotating machine to visualize different vibration conditions under two kinds of asymmetries, using four state-of-the-art manifold learning algorithms for comparison purposes. In all cases, the methods yield consistent results and produce insightful visualizations, suggesting future developments and application in engineering problems.

This paper presents TrAVis (Tracking dataanalysis and visualization Tools), a Web-based system, implemented to assist the participants in the learning process in analyzing the tracking data of Computer- Mediated Communication activities. While most of the existing systems in the same genre are exclusively dedicated to the teachers and only a few are accessible by students, TrAVis is objectively designed and built for both teachers and students. TrAVis is a technological solution that enables the students to monitor in real-time the individual or group activity. It is also considered a "reflective tool" that helps students analyze their own activities in relation to those of others. This paper focuses on (a) the visualization of students' tracking data to enhance self-monitoring process and (b) the experiment we have conducted in an authentic learning situation. It also discusses the feedbacks we received from the students regarding their perception on the usability and utility of TrAVis.

This paper presents a comprehensive neuronal signal analysis and processing tool, 'SigMate', developed in MATLAB, incorporating the available standard tools and our in-house custom tools. The present features include, datavisualization (2D and 3D), slow stimulus artifact removal (including baseline correction), noise characterization, file operations (file splitting, concatenation, and column rearranging), latency estimation in local field potentials (LFPs), current source density (CSD) analysis, determination of cortical layer activation order (CLAO) from LFPs and CSDs, spike detection, spike sorting, single sweep LFP sorting, EEG based brain-machine interfacing (BMI), neuronal simulation environment, and are gradually growing. This tool has been extensively tested using signals recorded by the standard electrodes as well as implantable EOSFETs (Electrolyte-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors) based multisite neural probes and will be made available to the community shortly.

Software evolution is one of the most important topics in modern software engineering research. This activity requires the analysis of large amounts of data describing the current software system structure as well as its previous history. Software visualization can be helpful in this scenario, as it can summarize this complex data into easy to interpret visual scenarios. This paper presents a interactive differential approach for visualizing software evolution. The approach builds multi-view structural descriptions of a software system directly from its source code, and uses colors to differentiate it from any other previous version. This differential approach is highly interactive allowing the user to quickly brush over many pairs of versions of the system. As a proof of concept, we used the approach to analyze eight versions of an open source system and found out it was useful to quickly identify hot spot and code smell candidates in them.
