Software evolution is one of the most important topics in modern software engineering research. This activity requires the analysis of large amounts of data describing the current software system structure as well as its previous history. Software visualization can be helpful in this scenario, as it can summarize this complex data into easy to interpret visual scenarios. This paper presents a interactive differential approach for visualizing software evolution. The approach builds multi-view structural descriptions of a software system directly from its source code, and uses colors to differentiate it from any other previous version. This differential approach is highly interactive allowing the user to quickly brush over many pairs of versions of the system. As a proof of concept, we used the approach to analyze eight versions of an open source system and found out it was useful to quickly identify hot spot and code smell candidates in them.

Over the last years, there has been a great development on real time terrain visualization applications using remote databases. One of the main problems that these applications must face is the storage and transmission of terrain data. Despite the considerable bandwidth increase of internet connection during last years, the large amount of data to be transmitted can easily saturate these connections. On other hand, since data must be stored in the client side, clients need a considerable storage space. In this context, we propose a new compression scheme that solves or minimizes these problems. It is based on JPEG2000 standard;however, the wavelet analysis and synthesis algorithms are modified to allow efficient transmission and reconstruction of terrain data by using tiled pyramids multiresolution techniques. A comparative study including current techniques shows that the proposed scheme obtains a better compression ratio of the terrain data, reducing the storage space and transmission bandwidth needed, achieving a better visual quality of terrain data reconstructed after data decompression.

Insectivorous bats are able to locate and capture insects in complete darkness while flying at high speeds. They may consume hundreds of insects each night while avoiding obstacles in a complex environment. To investigate the processes associated with bat echolocation, we have developed instrumentation that allows us to record and visualize what a bat hears while flying through its natural environment. Recordings were made using a miniaturized radio telemetry system mounted directly on the back of the bat. This paper describes the design and testing of the components of this system, presents echolocation data collected from bats and discusses issues associated with the visualization and analysis of echoes recorded in a natural setting from the bat's point-of-view. It presents a new tool for visualizing a bat's experience by generating call sequence sonograms (CSSs) based on various signal parameters. CSSs based on time series amplitude, band-limited spectral magnitude and Q-factor are presented. This work demonstrates that CSSs based on Q-factor (computed by dividing a peak frequency estimate by a bandwidth estimate) provides a relatively clear representation of the objects producing echoes encountered by a bat during a continuous flight. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper authors present their new proposition of system for cognitive analysis of dynamic computer tomography perfusion maps (dpCT). The novel contribution of this article is introducing an augmented reality visualization module that supports real time volume rendering (VR) of derived data. Authors also presents the results of their researches on optimization of VR algorithm memory usage by dynamic computation of volume gradient instead of pre-generation of gradient Authors compare five different discrete gradient computation schemas taking into account image quality and processing speed on two VR algorithms: volume ray casting and texture based visualization with view aligned slices.

In this paper we propose a new method for quantification of the rate of brain tissue deformation of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Our method allows for generating intermediary (virtual) MR brain volumes from real scans. In addition, we introduce two new descriptor spaces: (i) joint brain tissue deformation displacement vector magnitude and Jacobian and (ii) joint polar angles of displacement vector. In order to conduct our analysis, we built a visualization environment that illustrates images and flows, and it quantifies parameters. Through the calculation of the parameters, of the intermediary MR volumes, we create N-fold information simulating the deformation process. While our method is suitable for every neurodegenerative disease, we empirically tested our scheme on patients with diagnosed Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and normal controls from the ADNI database. We focus on regions containing either ventricles or hippocampus. A distinction between different subjects could clearly be made.

Parallel computational scientific applications have been described by their computation and communication patterns. From a storage and I/O perspective, these applications can also be grouped into separate data models based on the way data is organized and accessed during simulation, analysis, and visualization. Parallel netCDF is a popular library used in many scientific applications to store scientific datasets and provides high-performance parallel I/O. Although the metadata-rich netCDF file format can effectively store and describe regular multi-dimensional array datasets, it does not address the full range of current and future computational science data models. In this paper, we present a new storage scheme in Parallel netCDF to represent a broad variety of data models used in modern computational scientific applications. This scheme also allows concurrent metadata construction for different data objects from multiple groups of application processes, an important feature in obtaining a high degree of I/O parallelism for data models exhibiting irregular data distribution. Furthermore, we employ non-blocking I/O functions to aggregate irregularly distributed data requests into large, contiguous data requests, to achieve high-performance I/O. Using an example of adaptive mesh refinement data model, we demonstrate the proposed scheme can produce scalable performance results for both data and metadata creation and access. © 2011 IEEE.

New technologies permit the measurement of many types of genomic and epigenomic information at scales ranging from the atomic to nuclear. Much of this new data is structural in nature and challenging to coordinate with existing data formats. There is an increasing need to integrate and visualize disparate data sets in order to reveal structural relationships not apparent when viewing these data formats separately. We have developed the Genome3D software package in order to integrate and display epigenomic data within the context of a three-dimensional physical model of the human genome. To our knowledge, this is the first such tool developed to visualize human genome in three dimensions. Here we describe the major features of Genome3D and discuss our multi-scale data framework using a representative basic physical model. Additionally, utilities to generate demonstration models of common chromosome interaction scenarios derived from High-C or CHIA-PET analysis are under development. These models are compatible with existing annotation data formats and can demonstrate common situations where one or more chromosomes are arranged such that two or more interaction sites appear in close proximity. These models can be used to directly create publication images without resorting to intermediate use of image editing software.

Using visual tracking technology by CCD sensor instead of high speed computational resources to measure the fast dynamic systems is not easy. This paper proposes a simple and effective method to do the image processing, catching this dynamic movement in real-time and controlling the overhead crane. Visual tracking based on color histograms will compare the color in a model image with the color in image sequences to track the dynamic object. Once it tracked, the sensing data will be sent to the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (AFSMC) to control the overhead cranes. The merits of it include the robustness and model free properties of the sliding mode and fuzzy logic controllers;adaptable slopes of the sliding surface are also presented to enhance the control results.
