A new emerging field, that of visual stylometry of art, proposes to apply image analysis and machine learning tools to high-resolution digital images of artwork in order to assist art connoisseurs in determining the painting's likely creator. The premise is that each artist's brushwork is likely to contain features that are characteristic of the artist's unique habitual physical movements;these features could be identified and characterized through machine learning. In this paper, we describe a new technique for this problem. We extract, as features for our classifier, parameters of both Hidden Markov Tree models and linear predictor models of the painting's wavelet coefficients. We then use the FINE dimensionality reduction technique [1] to produce an unsupervised low-dimensional embedding of the data. Tests on two dataset consisting of over 100 high-resolution digital images of impressionist paintings by Van Gogh and contemporaries shows good separation between paintings of Van Gogh and others is achieved via this unsupervised process. We further show (through comparison with the alternative) that our method benefits greatly from (1) using only background sections of each painting in our analysis, (2) the FINE technique, and (3) the use of both HMT and linear predictor features together in the same analysis. All three of these technique choices are new in this paper. We hope that our method can be a tool, used carefully in conjunction with the connoisseur's expertise and other examinations, to determine a painting's true authorship.

The exponential diffusion of unstructured multimedia content on sites such as YouTube has lately fostered a rapid growth of interest in the multimedia community toward a new line of systems to recognize visual content "in the wild", that is, in less structured, unconstrained and more realistic domains. Due to the lack of structure and to the low quality of the data, algorithms and paradigms designed for professional content often cannot directly be applied to the aforementioned domains, thus presenting a new challenge. One instance of such "wild videos" is represented by un-structured presentation videos, which are tools nowadays employed in a large variety of systems for different purposes, spanning from distance or e-learning to generation of conference proceedings, from corporate talks to student presentations. We are interested in helping users efficiently and effectively access visual information, in particular technical information, and learn from such online multimedia sources. Our proposed system aims at summarizing, indexing, cross-referencing and browsing unstructured ("wild") presentation videos, with a focus on the quality of the produced indexes as perceived by the end users. Our aim is to predict the stability of a grasp from the perceptions available to a robot before attempting to lift up and transport an object. The percepts we consider consist of the tactile imprints and the object-gripper configuration read before and until the robot's manipulator is fully closed around an object. Our robot is equipped with multiple tactile sensing arrays and it is able to track the pose of an object during the application of a grasp. We present a kernel-logistic-regression model of pose-and touch-conditional grasp success probability which we train on grasp data collected by letting the robot experience the effect on tactile and visual signals of grasps suggested by a teacher, and letting the robot verify which grasps can be used to rigidly control the object. We consider models defined on several subspaces of our input data - e.g., using tactile perceptions or pose information only. Our experiment demonstrates that joint tactile and pose-based perceptions carry valuable grasp-related information, as models trained on both hand poses and tactile parameters perform better than the models trained exclusively on one perceptual input.

Attempt to visualize high dimensional datasets typically encounter over plotting and decline in visual comprehension that makes the knowledge discovery and feature subset analysis difficult. Hence, reshaping the datasets using dimensionality reduction technique is paramount by removing the superfluous attributes to improve visual analytics. In this work, we applied rough set theory as dimensionality reduction and feature selection methods on visualization to facilitate knowledge discovery of multi-dimensional datasets. We provided the case study using real datasets and comparison against other methods to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The direct view of the inner tract of the small intestine is not feasible until a recently revolutionary imaging technology, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE), appeared in 2001. However, interpretation of the produced video data for the digestive tract on each patient is left to naked eyes of medical staffs. Such a process is very tedious and time-consuming with the average inspection time about two hours for a whole WCE video. To overcome this big problem, automatic WCE video analysis is required. In this paper, we propose a comparative study of several image based features that may be suitable for WCE video abstract, which may be a good candidate to reduce the burden of physicians. Color, texture and motion features built from images are investigated and compared to show their performance in representing video content for a WCE video abstract. Preliminary experimental results of these features for WCE video abstract are also demonstrated and discussed. It is found that textural and motion features may be suitable candidates for visual frame depiction for WCE video abstract in terms of visual content representation and compression ratio. Clinical validation of our work remains to be implemented in the near future.

Visual mining refers to the cognitive process which integrates the human in analysis of information when using interactive visualization systems. This paper presents a classification scheme which provides user-centered representation of goals and actions that a user performs during the visual mining process. The classification scheme has been developed using content-analysis of published literature containing precise descriptions of different visual mining tasks in multiple fields of study. There were two stages in the development. First, we defined all the sub-processes of visual mining process. Then we used these sub-processes as a template to develop the initial coding scheme prior to utilizing specific data from each of the publications. As analysis proceeded, additional codes were developed and the initial coding scheme was refined. The results of the analysis were represented in the form of a classification scheme of the visual mining process. The naturalistic methods recommended by Lincoln and Guba have been applied to ensure that the content analysis is credible, transferable, dependable and confirmable.
