This study describes the design and feasibility testing of a hand rehabilitation system that provides haptic assistance for hand opening in moderate to severe hemiplegia while subjects attempt to perform bilateral hand movements. A cable-actuated exoskeleton robot assists the subjects in performing impaired finger movements but is controlled by movement of the unimpaired hand. In an attempt to combine the neurophysiological stimuli of bilateral movement and action observation during training, visual feedback of the impaired hand is replaced by feedback of the unimpaired hand, either by using a sagittaly oriented mirror or a virtual reality setup with a pair of virtual hands presented on a flat screen controlled with movement of the unimpaired hand, providing a visual image of their paretic hand moving normally. Joint angles for both hands are measured using data gloves. The system is programmed to maintain a symmetrical relationship between the two hands as they respond to commands to open and close simultaneously. Three persons with moderate to severe hemiplegia secondary to stroke trained with the system for eight, 30 to 60 minute sessions without adverse events. Each demonstrated positive motor adaptations to training. The system was well tolerated by persons with moderate to severe upper extremity hemiplegia. Further testing of its effects on motor ability with a broader range of clinical presentations is indicated.

An Unscented Information Filter (UIF) based multi-sensor fusion method for ground vehicles localization in urban environments is presented and evaluated. UIF is used to fuse information acquired from a stereo vision system, a laser range finder and a GPS receiver in order to provide more robust vehicle localization results. Stereovision based visual odometry is used as input of the UIF prediction stage. By the analysis of stereo images, the relative motion is estimated after removing the tracking outliers. Then, laser range finder based positions and GPS readouts are used as measurements to update the information state vector after consistency validation. Besides, a MICP (modified iterative closest points) method is proposed to ameliorate the performance of laser scan alignment by applying dynamic distance error threshold. The obtained results demonstrate that the MICP method reduces the matching ambiguities of the classic ICP method. The proposed multisensor localization method was tested with real data and was evaluated using RTK-GPS as the ground truth. It shows that the UIF based method provides accurate localization services during GPS outages (e.g., GPS jumps, GPS mask), while avoiding the trajectory drift of stereo camera and laser range finder based methods.

Research on bone and teeth mineralization in animal models is critical for understanding human pathologies. Genetically modified mice represent highly valuable models for the study of osteo/dentinogenesis defects and osteoporosis. Current investigations on mice dental and skeletal phenotype use destructive and time consuming methods such as histology and scanning microscopy. Micro-CT imaging is quicker and provides high resolution qualitative phenotypic description. However reliable quantification of mineralization processes in mouse bone and teeth are still lacking. We have established novel CT imaging-based software for accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of mouse mandibular bone and molars. data were obtained from mandibles of mice lacking the Fibromodulin gene which is involved in mineralization processes. Mandibles were imaged with a micro-CT originally devoted to industrial applications (Viscom, X8060 NDT). 3D advanced visualization was performed using the VoxBox software (UsefulProgress) with ray casting algorithms. Comparison between control and defective mice mandibles was made by applying the same transfer function for each 3D data, thus allowing to detect shape, colour and density discrepencies. The 2D images of transverse slices of mandible and teeth were similar and even more accurate than those obtained with scanning electron microscopy. Image processing of the molars allowed the 3D reconstruction of the pulp chamber, providing a unique tool for the quantitative evaluation of dentinogenesis. This new method is highly powerful for the study of oro-facial mineralizations defects in mice models, complementary and even competitive to current histological and scanning microscopy appoaches.

Estimating a causal relationship among cortical activities using the MEG source space analysis has gained a great interest. Such causality analysis generally requires to compute some types of causality measures using the estimated time series of target source activities. Here, popular measures are Granger-causality-based measures, which rely on the accurate modeling of the multivariate vector auto-regressive process of the source time series. This paper examines the effectiveness of a sparse Bayesian algorithm to estimate multivariate autoregressive coefficients when a large amount of background interference exists. This paper employs computer experiments to compare two methods in the source-space causality analysis: the conventional least-squares method and a sparse Bayesian method. Results of our computer experiments show that the interference affects the least-squares method in a very severe manner. It produces large false-positive results, unless the signal-to-interference ratio is very high. On the other hand, the sparse Bayesian method is relatively insensitive to the existence of interference. However, this robustness of the sparse Bayesian method is attained on the scarifies of the detectability of true causal relationship. Our experiments also show that the surrogate data bootstrapping method tends to give a statistical threshold that are too low for the sparse method. The permutation-test-based method gives a higher (more conservative) threshold and it should be used with the sparse Bayesian method whenever the control period is available.

In comparative genomics a central interest is to find a highly conforming subset of objects (e.g. expressed genes) resulting from two or more biological experiments addressing the same or a similar research question. The original experimental metric measurements can usually be transformed into rank data, a step required when the original measurements across the involved studies cannot be compared directly. We have developed the Rpackage TopKLists, which provides essential tools for meta-analysis of genomic study findings as well as other comparative tasks. It consists of three modules: (1) TopKInference offers exploratory nonparametric inference for the estimation of the top-k list length of paired rankings. (2) TopKSpace provides several rank aggregation techniques which allow the combination of studies of different lengths (space) as well as missing rank information. (3) TopKGraphics comprises a collection of graphical tools for the exploration of data and for the visualization of aggregation results. In this paper, we give an overview of the methods implemented, provide basic program information and finally show how TopKLists can be applied to control gene identification in multiple microarray data.

Categorical data is common within many areas and efficient methods for analysis are needed. It is, however, often difficult to analyse categorical data since no general measure of similarity exists. One approach is to represent the categories with numerical values (quantification) prior to visualization using methods for numerical data. Another is to use visual representations specifically designed for categorical data. Although commonly used, very little guidance is available as to which method may be most useful for different analysis tasks. This paper presents an evaluation comparing the performance of employing quantification prior to visualization and visualization using a method designed for categorical data. It also provides a guidance as to which visualization approach is most useful in the context of two basic data analysis tasks: one related to similarity structures and one related to category frequency. The results strongly indicate that the quantification approach is most efficient for the similarity related task, whereas the visual representation designed for categorical data is most efficient for the task related to category frequency.

Many image retargeting algorithms, despite aesthetically carving images smaller, pay limited attention to image browsing tasks where tiny thumbnails are presented. When applying traditional retargeting methods for generating thumbnails, several important issues frequently arise, including thumbnail scales, object completeness and local structure smoothness. To address these issues, we propose a novel image retargeting algorithm, Scale and Object Aware Retargeting (SOAR), which has four components: (1) a scale dependent saliency map to integrate size information of thumbnails, (2) objectness (Alexe et al. 2010) for preserving object completeness, (3) a cyclic seam carving algorithm to guide continuous retarget warping, and (4) a thin-plate-spline (TPS) retarget warping algorithm that champions local structure smoothness. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative evaluation is conducted through an image browsing user study to measure the effectiveness of different thumbnail generating algorithms, followed by the ANOVA analysis. The qualitative study is performed on the RetargetMe benchmark dataset. In both studies, SOAR generates very promising performance, in comparison with state-of-the-art retargeting algorithms.

Despite decades of study, robust shadow detection remains difficult, especially within a single color image. We describe a new approach to detect shadow boundaries in images of outdoor scenes lit only by the sun and sky. The method first extracts visual features of candidate edges that are motivated by physical models of illumination and occluders. We feed these features into a Support Vector Machine (SVM) that was trained to discriminate between most-likely shadow-edge candidates and less-likely ones. Finally, we connect edges to help reject non-shadow edge candidates, and to encourage closed, connected shadow boundaries. On benchmark shadow-edge data sets from Lalonde et al. and Zhu et al., our method showed substantial improvements when compared to other recent shadow-detection methods based on statistical learning.
