We present an uncertainty analysis of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled processes in a typical hot-dry-rock reservoir in crystalline rock. The conceptual model is an equivalent porous media approach which is adequate tor available data from the Urach Spa and Falkenberg sites (Germany). The finite element method (FEM) is used Oar the numerical analysis of fully coupled THM processes, including thermal water flow, advective-diffusive heat transport, and thermo-poro-elasticity. Reservoir parameters are considered as spatial random variables and their realizations are generated using conditional Gaussian simulation. The results show the influence of parameter ranges on the reservoir evolution during long-tem heat extraction taking into account fully coupled THM processes. We found that the most significant factors are permeability and heat capacity variations. The study demonstrates the importance of taking parameter uncertainties into account for geothermal reservoir evaluation in order to assess the predictability of numerical modelling.

analysis of high-dimensional micro array expression data is based mostly on the statistical approaches that are indispensable for the study of biological systems. To aid the analysis and exploration of such data, the process of analyzing such data is often enhanced with visual, data mining and other computational techniques. We utilize a set of tools for the visual analysis of data aimed at generating the hypotheses. We show the usability of classic and novel multi-dimensional visualization tools in life sciences. Additionally, we survey and show several multidimensional visualization tools applied to the process of data exploration using a urothelial cell carcinoma of the bladder time course. These tools have the potential of uncovering non-trivial relationships and structures in the data.

South Carolina is one of the most seismically active states in the eastern U.S. Due to this high level of seismic activity, structural health monitoring is important to ensure a high level of confidence in the state's infrastructure. The University of South Carolina (***) is currently studying the behavior of prestressed pile to bent-cap connections that are typical of construction used in the state. Bent caps are generally constructed with multiple piles. In these tests single pile specimens were created for both interior and exterior piles. Interior specimens were subjected to a constant compressive load while exterior specimens experienced both compressive and tensile loads. Acoustic Emission (AE) sensing was utilized on full-scale test specimens to investigate the feasibility of detecting and characterizing damage in these connections during a seismic event. Seven full-scale prestressed concrete piles have been embedded into cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete bent caps and tested under reverse cyclic loading. AE data has been gathered with eight strategically placed AE sensors. Preliminary analysis of the data indicates that AE is promising method with respect to the detection of damage prior to detection by visual observation. AE activity is used to detect both the onset and location of cracking and to characterize the extent of damage at later stages of degradation. One focus of the work is to minimize the amount of AE data recorded for the development of wireless systems having low power consumption.

Adequate functioning of the peripheral micro vascular in human skin is necessary to maintain optimal tissue perfusion and preserve normal hemodynamic function. There is a growing body of evidence suggests that vascular abnormalities may directly related to several dermatologic diseases, such as psoriasis, port-wine stain, skin cancer, etc. New in vivo imaging modalities to aid volumetric microvascular blood perfusion imaging are there for highly desirable. To address this need, we demonstrate the capability of ultra-high sensitive optical micro angiography to allow blood flow visualization and quantification of vascular densities of lesional psoriasis area in human subject in vivo. The microcirculation networks of lesion and non-lesion skin were obtained after post processing the data sets captured by the system. With our image resolution (similar to 20 mu m), we could compare these two types of microcirculation networks both qualitatively and quantitatively. The B-scan (lateral or x direction) cross section images, en-face (x-y plane) images and the volumetric in vivo perfusion map of lesion and non-lesion skin areas were obtained using UHS-OMAG. Characteristic perfusion map features were identified between lesional and non-lesional skin area. A statistically significant difference between vascular densities of lesion and non-lesion skin area was also found using a histogram based analysis. UHS-OMAG has the potential to differentiate the normal skin microcirculation from abnormal human skin microcirculation non-invasively with high speed and sensitivity. The presented data demonstrates the great potential of UHS-OMAG for detecting and diagnosing skin disease such as psoriasis in human subjects.

Game analytics is a domain that focuses on the systems and methods used to analyze game-related data. In this paper we present how a visual game analytic tool can be developed to analyze player gameplay behavior. Our tool, data Cracker, was built for monitoring gameplay in Dead Space 2, the latest game in the Dead Space franchise. We use data Cracker as a case study to inform a larger discussion of designing a visual game analytic tool while working with a game team. Our design approach focuses on increasing the data literacy of a game team. This means getting an entire team interested and involved with game analytics. We found that building our tool during the early game development cycle, creating multiple early visual prototypes and branding the tool to the Dead Space team caused more team members to become interested in our tool. Increasing interest in analytics is also a means, we argue, for changing the common occurrence within the game industry to disband teams after a game is released. Instead, we promote the creation of "live" teams which stay attached to a game long after it is release in order to continue the analysis process. Additionally, we discuss the barriers one might face when developing game analytic tools, such as prejudice against analytics or the technical issues involved when collecting large data sets. All of these examples are presented as insights we gained while coupling analytic tool design to game development. Copyright 2011 ACM.

The systems approach to biological research emphasises understanding of complete biological systems, rather than a reductionist focus on tightly defined component parts. Systems biology is naturally interdisciplinary;research groups active in this area typically contain experimental and theoretical biologists, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists and engineers. A wide range of tools are used to generate a variety of data types which must be integrated, presented to and analysed by researchers from any and all of the contributing disciplines. The goal here is to create predictive models of the system of interest;the models produced must also be analysed, and in the context of the data from which they were generated. Effective, integrated data and model visualisation methods are crucial if scientifically-appropriate judgments are to be made. The Nottingham Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) takes a systems approach to the study of the root of the model plant Arabidopsis Thaliana. A rich mixture of data types, many extracted via automatic analysis of individual and time-ordered sequences of standard CCD and confocal laser microscope images, is used to create models of different aspects of the growth of the Arabidopsis root. This talk briefly reviews the data sets and flow of information within CPIB, and discuss issues raised by the need to interpret images of the Arabidopsis root and integrate and present the resulting data and models to an interdisciplinary audience.

New motion capture technologies are allowing detailed, precise and complete monitoring of movement through real-time kinematic analysis. However, a clinically relevant understanding of movement impairment through kinematic analysis requires the development of computational models that integrate clinical expertise in the weighing of the kinematic parameters. The resulting kinematics based measures of movement impairment would further need to be integrated with existing clinical measures of activity disability. This is a challenging process requiring computational solutions that can extract correlations within and between three diverse data sets: human driven assessment of body function, kinematic based assessment of movement impairment and human driven assessment of activity. We propose to identify and characterize different sensorimotor control strategies used by normal individuals and by hemiparetic stroke survivors acquiring a skilled motor task. We will use novel quantitative approaches to further our understanding of how human motor function is coupled to multiple and simultaneous modes of feedback. The experiments rely on a novel interactive tasks environment developed by our team in which subjects are provided with rich auditory and visual feedback of movement variables to drive motor learning. Our proposed research will result in a computational framework for applying virtual information to assist motor learning for complex tasks that require coupling of proprioception, vision audio and haptic cues. We shall use the framework to devise a computational tool to assist with therapy of stroke survivors. This tool will utilize extracted relationships in a pre-clinical setting to generate effective and customized rehabilitation strategies.

Public health surveillance systems routinely process massive volumes of data to identify health adverse events affecting the general population. Surveillance and response to foodborne disease suffers from a number of systemic and other delays that hinder early detection and confirmation of emerging contamination situations. In this paper we develop an answer set programming (ASP) application to assist public health officials in detecting an emerging foodborne disease outbreak by integrating and analyzing in near real-time temporally, spatially and symptomatically diverse data. These data can be extracted from a large number of distinct information systems such as surveillance and laboratory reporting systems from health care providers, real-time complaint hotlines from consumers, and inspection reporting systems from regulatory agencies. We encode geographic ontologies in ASP to infer spatial relationships that may not be evident using traditional statistical tools. These technologies and ontologies have been implemented in a new informatics tool, the North Carolina Foodborne Events data Integration and analysis Tool (NCFEDA). The application was built to demonstrate the potential of situational awareness-created through real-time data fusion, analytics, visualization, and real-time communication-to reduce latency of response to foodborne disease outbreaks by North Carolina public health personnel.

In symbolic data analysis, we deal with the higher level objects, called "concepts." In the framework, a dissimilarity between two objects can be described as not only a single value, but also an interval, a fuzzy number, a histogram, and so on. Various clustering and multidimensional scaling methods for such complex dissimilarity data, called symbolic MDS and symbolic clustering, have been proposed. In most symbolic MDS methods, objects are represented by regions in real space (e. g. hypersphere, hyperbox and, so on). Denoeux and Masson (2000) proposed the hypersphere and hyperbox model of MDS for interval dissimilarities. In the hypersphere (hyperbox) model, objects are described by hyperspheres (hyperboxes) in real space. Moreover, Masson and Denoeux (2002) proposed the MDS method for fuzzy dissimilarities. In this method, an object is represented by nested hyperspheres which have a same center point. This constraint is very strict condition and not unsatisfied in most cases. In this paper, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for that two hyperspheres are nested and propose a new MDS model for dissimilarities described by percentile intervals. In our method, more general nested hyperspheres, which are not necessary to have the same center point, are used for representing an object.

The possible effects of anthropogenic noise on the marine environment is becoming an important topic in the oceanic community. The exploration for fossil-fuel or alternative energy and the construction of facilities to support these endeavors often requires sizable construction efforts;which usually require permitting to study the impact of noise on the environment. Of particular interest is the variety of data products used to influence environmental impact reports and the processing time required to generate these data from large amounts of passive acoustic recordings. This paper outlines work being done by the Bioacoustics Research Program at Cornell University and the Lab of Ornithology, (BRP) for developing MATLAB tools in support of environmental compliance reporting. Due to the success of acoustic monitoring, understanding acoustic signatures is now becoming part of environmental impact assessment and required compliance for permitting. BRP has leveraged various existing tools and capabilities which result in integrated special purpose software tools within a MATLAB toolbox called SEDNA(1). SEDNA incorporates various tools to measure acute and chronic noise levels, detect and classify marine mammal vocalizations, and compute various metrics such as receive levels, signal excess, masking and communication space. This work will summarize the high performance computing strategy used in the SEDNA Toolbox along with the capability to integrate various layers of data within a modeling framework that incorporates ambient noise, vessel and animal data. Finally, the work will demonstrate the power of this approach through animated data visualization, showing animal, vessel and ambient noise integrated over relatively large temporal and spatial scales.
