visualization techniques are tools that can improve analyst's insight into the results of knowledge discovery process or to directly explore and analyze data. They allows analysts to interact with the graphical representation to get new knowledge. The choice of visualization techniques must follow some criteria to guarantee a consistent data representation. This paper presents a study based on Grounded Theory that indicates parameters for select visualization techniques, which are: data type, task type, data volume, data dimension and position of the attributes in the display. These parameters are analyzed in the context of visualization technique categories: standard 1D - 3D graphics, iconographic techniques, geometric techniques, pixel-oriented techniques and graph-based or hierarchical techniques. The analysis over the association among these parameters and visualisation techniques culminated in guidelines establishment to choose the most appropriate techniques according to the data characteristics and the objective of the knowledge discovery process.

The surveillance of large sea, air or land areas normally involves the analysis of large volumes of heterogeneous data from multiple sources. Timely detection and identification of anomalous behavior or any threat activity is an important objective for enabling homeland security. While it is worth acknowledging that many existing mining applications support identification of anomalous behavior, autonomous anomaly detection systems for area surveillance are rarely used in the real world. We argue that such capabilities and applications present two critical challenges: (1) they need to provide adequate user support and (2) they need to involve the user in the underlying detection process. In order to encourage the use of anomaly detection capabilities in surveillance systems, this paper analyzes the challenges that existing anomaly detection and behavioral analysis approaches present regarding their use and maintenance by users. We analyze input parameters, detection process, model representation and outcomes. We discuss the role of visualization and interaction in the anomaly detection process. Practical examples from our current research within the maritime domain illustrate key aspects presented.

Self-organizing feature map (SOM) is well known artificial neural network using unsupervised learning for the data visualization and vector quantization. SOM has been used for cluster analysis. On the other hand, SOM cannot produce clarified clusters. And so SOM clustering capability is depends on visualization method. We proposed a variant of SOM that construct hierarchical neural network structure to clarify cluster boundaries in previous research. In this paper, we proposed a visualization method for this growing Tree-Structured SOM and discuss the computational result of Iris data.

Bibliographic databases are a prosperous field for data mining research and social network analysis. They contain rich information, which can be analyzed across different dimensions (e.g., author, year, venue, topic) and can be exploited in multiple ways. The representation and visualization of bibliographic databases as graphs and the application of data mining techniques can help us uncover interesting knowledge concerning potential synergies between researchers, possible matchings between researchers and venues, or even the ideal venue for presenting a research work. In this paper, we propose a novel representation model for bibliographic data, which combines co-authorship and content similarity information, and allows for the formation of scientific networks. Using a graph visualization tool from the biological domain, we are able to provide comprehensive visualizations that help us uncover hidden relations between authors and suggest potential synergies between researchers or groups.

Online Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their associated data visualization technologies are playing an increasingly important role in providing updated information for environmental models. The analysis of simulation results are often benefited from their georeferenced animated visualization. We present an architectural web-based integration of the DCD++ distributed modeling and simulation framework as the centerpiece of a GIS-based scientific workflow to study environmental phenomena. We demonstrate an end-to-end application of the proposed architecture by means of a wildfire spreading model, backed by online updates of different parameters affecting the environmental system under study. Google Earth and GRASS are the two GIS systems selected to highlight the flexibility of the integrated system.

Most commercial intrusion detections systems (IDS) can produce a very high volume of alerts, and are typically plagued by a high false positive rate. The approach described here uses Splunk to aggregate IDS alerts. The aggregated IDS alerts are retrieved from Splunk programmatically and are then clustered using text analysis and visualized using a sunburst diagram to provide an additional understanding of the data. The equivalent of what the cluster analysis and visualization provides would require numerous detailed queries using Splunk and considerable manual effort.

This paper deals with a 3D visualization technique proposed to analyze and manage energy efficiency from a data center. data are extracted from sensors located in the IBM Green data Center in Montpellier France. These sensors measure different information such as hygrometry, pressure and temperature. We want to visualize in real-time the large among of data produced by these sensors. A visualization engine has been designed, based on particles system and a client server paradigm. In order to solve performance problems, a Level Of Detail solution has been developed. These methods are based on the earlier work introduced by J. Clark in 1976(1). In this paper we introduce a particle method used for this work and subsequently we explain different simplification methods applied to improve our solution.

MANY dimensionality reduction algorithms have been proposed easing both tasks of visualization and classification in high dimension problems. Despite the different motivations they can be cast in a graph embedding framework. In this paper we address weighted graph subspace learning methods for bankruptcy analysis. The rationale behind re-embedding the data in a lower dimensional space that would be better filled is twofold: to get the most compact representation (visualization) and to make subsequent processing of data more easy (classification). The approaches used, Graph regularized Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (GNMF) and Spatially Smooth Subspace Learning (SSSL), construct an affinity weight graph matrix to encode geometrical information and to learn in the training set the subspace models that enhance visualization and are able to ease the task of bankruptcy prediction. The experimental results on a real problem of French companies show that from the perspective of financial problem analysis the methodology is quite effective.

Through the analysis of the cloud storage, cloud computing technology and characteristics of the remote sensing data, a method of mass remote sensing data stored in the cloud is put forward in this paper. Combined with the characteristics of remote sensing data and its processing algorithm, three program designing ideas, namely making data parallel, algorithm parallel and data algorithm nested parallel are proposed. By comparing the experimental results, realization of remote sensing data parallel processing based on cloud platform shows the superiority of the technical solution.

Visualizing the collective modulation of multiple neurons during a known behavioral task is useful for exploratory analysis, but handling the large dimensionality of neural recordings is challenging. We further investigate using static dimensionality reduction techniques on neural firing rate data during an arm movement task. This lower-dimensional representation of the data is able to capture the neural states corresponding to different portions of the behavior task. A simulation using a dynamical model lends credence to the ability of the technique to generate a representation that preserves underlying dynamics of the model. This technique is a straightforward way to extract a useful visualization for neural recordings during brain-machine interface tasks. Meaningful visualization confirms underlying structure in data, which can be captured with parametric modeling.
