A central problem in cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery is to restore the normal anatomy of the skeleton after defects, e.g., trauma to the face. With careful pre-operative planning, the precision and predictability of the craniofacial reconstruction can be significantly improved. In addition, morbidity can be reduced thanks to shorter operation time. An important component in surgery planning is to be able to accurately measure the extent of anatomical structures. Of particular interest are the shape and volume of the orbits (eye sockets). These properties can be measured in 3D CT images of the skull, provided that an accurate segmentation of the orbits is available. Here, we present a system for interactive segmentation of the orbit in CT images. The system utilizes 3D visualization and haptic feedback to facilitate efficient exploration and manipulation of 3D data.

We present a spectral-based method for the 2D/3D rigid registration of X-ray images to a CT scan. The method uses a Fourier-based representation to decompose the six rigid transformation parameters problem into a two-parameter out-of-plane rotation and a four-parameter in-plane transformation problems. Preoperatively, a set of Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs (DRRs) are generated offline from the CT in the expected in-plane location ranges of the fluoroscopic X-ray imaging devices. Each DRR is transformed into a imaging device in-plane invariant features space. Intraoperatively, a few 2D projections of the patient anatomy are acquired with an X-ray imaging device. Each projection is transformed into its in-plane invariant representation. The out-of-plane parameters are first computed by maximization of the Normalized Cross-Correlation between the invariant representations of the DRRs and the X-ray images. Then, the in-plane parameters are computed with the phase correlation method based on the Fourier-Mellin transform. Experimental results on publicly available data sets show that our method can robustly estimate the out-of-plane parameters with accuracy of 1.5 degrees in less than 1sec for out-of-plane rotations of 10 degrees or more, and perform the entire registration in less than 10secs.

The need to prolong the ability for older adults to live at home independently has become an important area of smart environment research. In this proposal, we demonstrate a web-based visualization system (CASASviz) that integrates monitoring, analysis, and automated recognition of residents behavior patterns in smart environments. In our data collection module, we collect real sensor data from the CASAS smart apartment testbed. For our data adapter, we translate the raw data to various compatible formats for different visualization applications. In our visualization application module, we visualize resident behavior graphs that allow users to understand their behavior patterns in our smart environments.

While much work has been done in the area of visualization for analysis of graphs, relatively little research exists into how best to use visualization for comparing graphs. We have developed a suite of general graph comparison questions that can be tailored to specific data sets, and compared the use of superimposed and juxtaposed views of graph matrices on an example data set. Our observations indicate that combined views are more useful in comparing general graphs, allowing for greater user accuracy in determining differences and their effects.

In this paper, we propose a life log viewer that gives the users new findings from life logs in daily life, and provides seamless integration with external information. We classify life logs into two types. "Unintended life logs" are recorded automatically without the user's direct input;"intended life logs" are recorded purposefully by the user. Based on this classification, we implement a prototype that has two characteristics. First, it can visualize a user's unintended life log from long-term and multi-dimensional points of view. Second, its user interface is designed to visualize the transitions from the analysis results of the unintended life log to event data in the intended life log, and from event data in the intended life log to search results that provide information about the events. We believe that this viewer is a stepping-stone to the "Life Portal" that integrates existing portals with life log analysis to create a stimulus for search initiation.

This paper presents an immediate-mode, integrated approach to image fusion and visualization of multi-band satellite data, drawing from the computational resources of networked, high-resolution, tiled display environments. The presented workflow enables researchers to intuitively and interactively experiment with all tunable parameters, exposed through external devices such as MIDI controllers, to rapidly modify the image processing pipeline and resulting visuals. This presented approach demonstrates significant savings across a set of case studies, with respect to overall data footprint, processing and analysis time complexity.

Noninvasive electroencephalography (EEG) brain computer interface (BCI) systems are used to investigate intended arm reaching tasks. The main goal of the work is to create a device with a control scheme that allows those with limited motor control to have more command over potential prosthetic devices. Four healthy subjects were recruited to perform various reaching tasks directed by visual cues. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to identify artifacts. Active post parietal cortex (PPC) activation before arm movement was validated using EEGLAB. Single-trial binary classification strategies using support vector machine (SVM) with radial basis functions (RBF) kernels and Fisher linear discrimination (FLD) were evaluated using signal features from surface electrodes near the PPC regions. No significant improvement can be found by using a nonlinear SVM over a linear FLD classifier (63.65% to 63.41% accuracy). A significant improvement in classification accuracy was found when a normalization factor based on visual cue "signature" was introduced to the raw signal (90.43%) and the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the data (93.55%) using Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD).

The feasibility of using interactive 3D home visualization software (I3DHVS) as a tool to aid Occupational Therapists (OTs) in carrying out pre-discharge home visits (PDHV) is explored. Three focus groups involving 25 OTs from across the UK were carried out. Participants were asked to report their level of experience with Information Technology (IT) and gaming software. After a demonstration of the I3DHVS OTs were asked to discuss where, when, how and by whom this software may potentially be used, and to identify associated strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of use within the specified contacts. A thematic template analysis was then carried out on the transcribed focus group data which focused on two key Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) criteria which mediate users' behavioral intention and actual use of new technologies: (1) the Perceived Usefulness (PU) of the software within the PDHV process;(2) the Perceived Ease of Use (PEoU) of the software. The results revealed that although a number of adaptations to the existing application may be necessary, OTs are optimistic about the use of I3DHVS with a range of patient groups. The tool was also seen to have the potential to improve communication and collaboration across inter-agency care teams.
