We propose an approach that derives interactive visualization scenarios from descriptions of code analysis tasks. The scenario derivation is treated as an optimization process. In this context, we evaluate different possibilities of using a given visualization tool to perform the analysis task, and select the scenario that requires the least effort from the analyst. Our approach was applied successfully to various analysis tasks such as design defect detection and feature location.

The recent deployment of functional networks to analyze fMRI images has been very promising. In this method, the spatio-temporal fMRI data is converted to a graph-based representation, where the nodes are voxels and edges indicate the relationship between the nodes, such as the strength of correlation or causality. Graph-theoretic measures can then be used to compare different fMRI scans. However, there is a significant computational bottleneck, as the computation of functional networks with directed links takes several hours on conventional machines with single CPUs. The study in this paper shows that a GPU can be advantageously used to accelerate the computation, such that the network computation takes a few minutes. Though GPUs have been used for the purposes of displaying fMRI images, their use in computing functional networks is novel. We describe specific techniques such as load balancing, and the use of a large number of threads to achieve the desired speedup. Our experience in utilizing the GPU for functional network computations should prove useful to the scientific community investigating fMRI as GPUs are a low-cost platform for addressing the computational bottleneck.

The exponential growth of data generates terabytes of very large databases. The growing number of data dimensions and data objects presents tremendous challenges for effective dataanalysis and data exploration methods and tools. One solution commonly proposed is the use of a condensed description of the properties and structure of data. Thus, it becomes crucial to have visualization tools capable of representing the data structure, not from the data themselves, but from these condensed descriptions. The purpose of our work described in this paper is to develop and put a synergistic visualization of data and knowledge into the knowledge discovery process. We propose here a method of describing data from enriched and segmented prototypes using a clustering algorithm. We then introduce a visualization tool that can enhance the structure within and between groups in data. We show, using some artificial and real databases, the relevance of the proposed method.

Core analysis is one of the most necessary means to recognize the geological characteristics of reservoirs. Recently, the oil and gas exploration of particular lithology such as volcanic, conglomerate, mud and carbonate rocks continued to make new breakthroughs. As a result, core analysis for particular lithology reservoir rock is increasingly significant. However, conventional methods of core analyzing have great limitations on particular lithology due to the complex chemical components and variable physical status. hi order to obtain accurate experimental data and understand the seepage law of particular lithology, advanced core analysis methods are developed through the application of computed tomography (CT). Through the application of nondestructive CT testing for inner construction of core, and the establishing of CT evaluation criterion for the heterogeneity of particular lithology, the goals of analyzing the features and growth of holes and fractures in core and heterogeneity of core are archived. The evaluation criterion is composed by qualitative evaluation and quantitative evaluation, and gives the corresponding evaluation method and formula. The evaluation criterion provides the basis for CT analysis of particular lithology. The application of CT analysis for 211 cores of particular lithology shows: 1) Most conglomerates develops gravel-edge fractures, growth of the fractures is proportional to the level of gravel and inverse proportional to the degree of compaction. Holes in conglomerate are mainly corroding holes between gravel. The growth of holes is related to the composition of cement and compaction. With the lower gravel level, the number of holes and fractures decline. 2) Most volcanic rocks develop holes;some of them develop big holes or lots of holes. Several volcanic samples contain micro-fractures. The growth of holes and fractures in different volcanic rock categories are equivalent, but the type of holes and fractures are different. This res

Digital crimes are increasing, so is the need for improvements in digital forensics. With the growth of storage capacity these digital forensic investigations are getting more difficult. visualization allows for displaying big amounts of data at once, so a foresic investigator is able to maintain an overlook about the whole case. Through zooming it is possible to analyze interesting parts of evidence without losing the general view. This paper gives an overview of data classification, data sources and a classification of available techniques. Different state of the art tools for visualization of frequency, timelines, e-mails and logging data are discussed. Further details on how these tools support the digital forensics progress through visualization are given. Finally a comparison between conventional approaches and visualization techniques is presented. The benefit for the reader is to get a quick overview of the state-of-the-art of visualization techniques for processing digital evidence.

This paper proposes a new method of creating 3D visual data cubes for high volume/dimension OLAP dataanalysis with intuitive region selection. Previous methods construct data cubes directly from a data warehouse and build table format cubes with multi-dimensional attributes, in order to specify target ranges for analysis. However, it is a difficult task to select appropriate attributes and their ranges from high cardinality of dimensions with hierarchical structure. The new method reduces the number of dimensions according to the levels of relationship, then confines analysis target ranges with intuitive 3D graphical interface to build an analysis target cube.

To visualize security trends for the data set provided by the VAST 2011 Mini Challenge #2 a custom tool has been developed. Open source tools [1,2], web programming languages [4,7] and an open source database [3] has been used to work with the data and create a visualization for security log files containing network security trends. In this paper, the tools and methods used for the analysis are described. The methods include the log synchronization with different timezone and the development of heat maps and parallel coordinates charts. To develop the visualization, Processing and Canvas [4,7] was used.

Recent contextual developments constitute a backdrop of change for the Dutch electricity system. Institutional change driven by liberalization, changing economic competitiveness of the dominant fuels, new technologies, and changing end-user preferences regarding electricity supply are some examples of these developments. This paper explores plausible transition trajectories in the face of these developments given technological uncertainty about investment and operating costs, and fuel efficiency of various alternative technologies;political uncertainty about future CO2 abetment policies such as emission trading;and socio-economic uncertainty about fuel prices, investment decisions of suppliers, and load curves. Various alternative developments for these uncertainties are specified. The consequences of each of these alternative developments is assessed using an agent-based model of the Dutch electricity system. The outputs are analyzed using various data-mining and datavisualization techniques in order to reveal arch-typical transition trajectories and their conditions for occurring. Policy recommendations are derived from this. The results indicate that most transition trajectories point towards a future energy supply system that is reliant on clean coal and gas. Under the explored uncertainties, only rarely a transition to renewables occurs. The various sustainable energy support programs appear to be ineffective in steering the energy supply system towards a more sustainable mode of functioning across the various uncertainties.

In this paper, we propose a novel electronic medical record system (EMR) based on a brand new concept to support doctors' cognition and medical analysis wherever they are. Conventional EMR systems have the advantage of helping doctors easily retrieve and manage mass medical records. On the other hand, medical records have been expected to support doctors' planning. Most conventional EMR systems don't have an appropriate function for such purpose, however. Because of its poor user interface, which is similar to legacy medical records written on paper, they can't help doctors analyze medical data that occurs chronologically. To attain that purpose, the system has to have the ability to visualize medical data that occurs over various time spans. This is because the relationship among the different medical data should be observable when we look at it over various time spans. In addition, doctors aren't always at their desks, so they can't always use EMR systems with a desktop PC. Therefore, in view of these problems, we propose a system that has timeline interface which visualizes medical data that occurs over various time spans and its client application works on a mobile device. In this manner, the system can support doctors' cognition and medical analysis wherever they are. In addition, we are verifying this system in the medical field.
