data Envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for evaluating the management efficiency of Decision Making Units (DMUs) relatively. However, when the number of inputs and outputs items is increased, the results of evaluation value are similar regretfully. In order to evaluate Japanese universities which have various activities, this study proposed the hierarchical structure DEA model which is divided into some activities (finance, achievement, attractiveness, research, and education). Hierarchical structure has constructed by some layers based on the theory that the efficiencies of lower layer can not exceed the ones of upper layer. In addition, this paper proposed the visualization method that the analyst can visually understand which field is strong or weak. Using proposed DEA model and visualizing method, the numerical study showed us to be able to understand the feature of each university.

Multiresolution semantic analysis of data involves inferring increasing levels of meaning from data. Due to the large volume and complexity of network data, multi resolution visualizations allow the user to rapidly focus on meaningful and relevant information. Current tools and techniques for visual analysis of network data are limited in their ability to operate at semantically relevant resolutions and impose great cognitive burden on users to manually infer semantics from low-level details. Extending our previous work that allows users to define semantics as abstract models, we apply these models to construct multi resolution visualizations of network traffic data. Our methodology for visual exploration allows the user to rapidly analyze and understand network traces, by providing intuitive and interactive representations of the network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by applying it to analyzing network trace data from a cyber security incident involving DNS cache poisoning.

Extracting patterns from protein sequence data is one of the challenges of computational biology. Here we use linear algebra to analyze sequences without the requirement of multiples alignments. In this study, the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a sparse p-peptide frequency matrix (M) is used to detect and extract signals from noisy protein data (M = USVT). The central matrix S is diagonal and contains the singular values of M in decreasing order. Here we give sense to the biological significance of the SVD: the singular value spectrum visualized as scree plots unreveals the main components, the process that exists hidden in the database. This information can be used in many applications as clustering, gene expression analysis, immune response pattern identification, characterization of protein molecular dynamics and phylogenetic inference. The visualization of singular value spectrum from SVD analysis shows how many processes can be hidden in database and can help biologists to detect and extract small signals from noisy data.

Bibliographic databases are a prosperous field for data mining research and social network analysis. They contain rich information, which can be analyzed across different dimensions(e.g., author, year, venue, topic) and can be exploited in multiple ways. The representation and visualization of bibliographic databases as graphs and the application of data mining techniques can help us uncover interesting knowledge concerning potential synergies between researchers, possible matchings between researchers and venues, or even the ideal venue for presenting a research work. In this paper, we propose a novel representation model for bibliographic data, which combines co-authorship and content similarity information, and allows for the formation of scientific networks. Using a graph visualization tool from the biological domain, we are able to provide comprehensive visualizations that help us uncover hidden relations between authors and suggest potential synergies between researchers or groups.

Nucleation phenomena play a crucial role in plenty of atmospheric and technological processes. Being short of efficient visual data exploration tools has given rise to trouble understanding atmospheric nucleation processes. In this paper, we utilize the knowledge of hyper tree visualization to enhance our previously developed web-based visualization and analysis tool that allows remote users to effectively mine the wealth of particle-based nucleation simulation data. Our goal is to speed up knowledge discovery and improve users' productivity through effective visual data mining techniques and more friendly user interface design. Meanwhile, we developed a feasible parallel computing solution to overcome the slow response due to expensive large data pre-processing.

Chi showed how to treat visualization programing models abstractly. This provided a firm theoretical basis for the data-state model of visualization. However, Chi's models did not look deeper into fine-grained program properties, such as execution semantics. We present conditionally deterministic and resource bounded semantics for the data flow model of visualization based on E-FRP. These semantics are used in the Stencil system to move between data state and data flow execution, build task-based parallelism, and build complex analysis chains for dynamic data. This initial work also shows promise for other complex operators, compilation techniques to enable efficient use of time and space, and mixing task and data parallelism.
