This paper reviews the historic of ChaLearn Looking at People (LAP) events. We started in 2011 (with the release of the first Kinect device) to run challenges related to human action/activity and gesture recognition. Since then we have regularly organized events in a series of competitions covering all aspects of visual analysis of humans. So far we have organized more than 10 international challenges and events in this field. This paper reviews associated events, and introduces the ChaLearn LAP platform where public resources (including code, data and preprints of papers) related to the organized events are available. We also provide a discussion on our main findings and perspectives of ChaLearn LAP activities.

In this paper, I analyze the win screen in the puzzle game SpaceChem (Zachtronics 2011a), notable for the three datavisualizations it uses in place of a traditional leaderboard. Through this case study, I aim to problematize taken-for-granted use of both datavisualization and social networking features. I perform a visual analysis informed by affordance theory to identify the kind of behavior encouraged or discouraged by these elements as well as a prominent "Record Solution" button which allows sharing player solutions via YouTube. I find that these elements complicate the division between the diegetic and non-diegetic as they invite a player outside the game and onto another platform. Significantly, ambiguity between the world of a particular game and the data-gathering, networked systems they are part of is not unique to SpaceChem but rather part of a growing proportion of the games we engage in, be it through achievement systems or social networks.

Software development process requires judicious quality control, using performance indicators to support decision-making in the different processes chains. This paper recommends the use of machine learning with the semi-supervised algorithms to analyze these indicators. In this context, this paper proposes the use of visualization techniques of multidimensional information to support the labeling process of samples, increasing the reliability of the labeled indicators (group or individual). The experiments show analysis from real indicators data of a software development company and use the algorithm bioinspired Particle Competition and Cooperation. The information visualization techniques used are: Least Square Projection, Classical Multidimensional Scaling and Parallel Coordinates. Those techniques help to correct the labeling process performed by specialists (labelers), enabling the identification of mistakes in order to improve the data accuracy for application of the semi-supervised algorithm.
Throughout the years, researchers have tried to understand dynamics and general patterns associated with human movement, e.g. in the context of urban planning, to improve the lives of citizens. To do this, it is neces...

This paper aims to assess the diffusion and adoption of nanotechnology knowledge within the Turkish scientific community using social network analysis and bibliometrics. We retrieved a total of 10,062 records of nanotechnology papers authored by Turkish researchers between 2000 and 2011 from Web of Science and divided the data set into two 6-year periods. We analyzed the most prolific and collaborative authors and universities on individual, institutional and international levels based on their network properties (e.g., centrality) as well as the nanotechnology research topics studied most often by the Turkish researchers. We used co-word analysis and mapping to identify the major nanotechnology research fields in Turkey on the basis of the co-occurrence of words in the titles of papers. We found that nanotechnology research and development in Turkey is on the rise and its diffusion and adoption have increased tremendously thanks to the Turkish government's decision a decade ago identifying nanotechnology as a strategic field and providing constant support since then. Turkish researchers tend to collaborate within their own groups or universities and the overall connectedness of the network is thus low. Their publication and collaboration patterns conform to Lotka's law. They work mainly on nanotechnology applications in Materials Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, among others. This is commensurate, more or less, with the global trends in nanotechnology research and development.

In the actual classification problems, as a result of lack of clear boundary information between classification objects, that could lead to loss of classification accuracy easily. Therefore, this article from the spatial patterns of the sample properties to proceed, fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed based on the sensitivity of attribute weights, through using the attribute weights to improve the classification capability between confusing samples, that is for researching and analysing soil nutrient spatial data with consecutive years to collect in Nongan town. Then through the analysis of the visualization technology to realize the visualization of the algorithm. Experimental results show that introducing weights portray attribute information could reduce the objective function value, and effectively alleviate the phenomenon of boundary data that cannot distinguish. Ultimately to improve the classification accuracy. Meanwhile, use of MATLAB to form visualization of three-dimensional image. The results provide a basis for to improve the accuracy of data classification and clustering analysis of large and complex agricultural data.
When exploring large spatial datasets, zooming and panning interactions often lead to the loss of contextual overview. Existing overview-plus-detail approaches allow users to view context while inspecting details, but...

Interactive Visual analysis has been widely used for the reason that it allows users to investigate highly complex data in coordinated multiple views, showing different perspectives over data. In order to relate data, multiple techniques of brushing have been introduced. This work extends the state of the art by introducing the Convex Hull (CH) Brush, which is a new way of selecting and interpreting high dimensional data in scatter plot (SP) views. By using a combination of brushes through linked views, the CH-Brush allows the selection and clustering of values that are not typically defined by SP ranges, in spite of sharing similarities. In CH-Brushing is also able to visually report the existence of correlation between variables. Furthermore, we discuss CH-Brushing sensitivity and the application of smoothness. We use synthetic data to support our rationale and clarify the intrinsic meanings of CH-Brushing in scatter plots. We also report on the first experience on using the CH-Brush in a real-world medical case.

This volume aims to stimulate discussions on research involving the use of data and digital images as an understanding approach for analysis and visualization of phenomena and experiments. The emphasis is put not only on graphically representing data as a way of increasing its visual analysis, but also on the imaging systems which contribute greatly to the comprehension of real cases. Scientific visualization and Imaging Systems encompass multidisciplinary areas, with applications in many knowledge fields such as Engineering, Medicine, Material Science, Physics, Geology, Geographic Information Systems, among others. This book is a selection of 13 revised and extended research papers presented in the International conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting -ACE-X conferences 2010 (Paris), 2011 (Algarve), 2012 (Istanbul) and 2013 (Madrid). The examples were particularly chosen from materials research, medical applications, general concepts applied in simulations and image analysis and other interesting related problems.

Two dimensional static maps and three dimensional space-time cubes are among the most studied techniques to visualize human movement data. Previous research suggests that both techniques are useful in different types of tasks. However, the analysis of trajectory data may not be focused in just one type of task, motivating further studies to quantify the advantages of combining both types of techniques. This paper describes our work-in-progress addressing this issue, proposing the combination of 2D maps and 3D space-time cubes for human trajectory visualization, and overviewing possible metrics for its evaluation.
