For a clearer demonstration of the morphological characteristics of an individual Mongolian Scots Pine in its plantation and more supports for teaching as well as research, in this study, the system analysis principle and mathematical modeling techniques were employed to construct the morphology model of an individual Mongolian Scots Pine in its plantation. The crown structure model was constructed under the guidance of quantitative analysis of its morphology data. The 3-Dimensional (3-D) geometrical modeling technology of different organs was also investigated, and organ geometrical models were developed according to characteristic parameters. Moreover, individual tree model was built by means of assembling single organs. The studies above laid a solid foundation for a virtual system that, with the help of the developing platform of VC++ language and OpenGL, can realize the organic integration between the growth mechanism and the visual expression of morphological characteristics. In addition, it also showed the ideas of the organic integration between crown structure model and visualization. The system consists of geometric construction module, crown model module, visualization module, scene control module, two database, and human-machine interface. Operations of the system turned out to be fully capable of achieving the visual expression of the morphological characteristics of an individual Mongolian Scots Pine in its plantation based on the field measured data or the parameters which was outputted by the models. Not only can this visualization be a solid foundation for visualization of forest management, it can also become a nice reference for the visualization study of other species.

One of the most crucial issues, during the operation of power system, is to deal with the power failures timely and rapidly in case the accident grows bigger, which calls for our operators and controllers to judge the fault facilities correctly. Based on the development of science and information technology aimed at automatic control upon power grid, we put for-ward a method of online fault diagnosis which comprehensive use three-state data (steady, dynamic, transient state), co-processes on the time, space and information dimensions of data sources together, to improve real-time, reliability and practicality of power fault diagnosis. OntoGen is a semi-automatic and data-driven ontology editor focusing on editing of topic ontologies. It utilizes text mining tools to make the ontology-related tasks simpler to the user. This focus on building ontologies from textual data is what we are trying to bridge. We have successfully extended OntoGen to work with image data and allow for ontology construction and editing on collections of labeled or unlabeled images. Browsing large heterogenous image collections efficiently is certainly a challenging task - and we feel that semiautomatic ontology construction, as described in this paper, makes this task easier.

The NASA Spatial Web Portal (SWP) is designed to support the open discovery, access, and visualization of geospatial resources. In this paper, we introduce the development of a client for the SWP using Microsoft Bing Maps AJAX APIs. The client consists of three key components: resource search, resource access, and resource visualization. The visualization component provides generic capabilities for visualizing geospatial web services from various domains. Current version supports displaying OGC WMS services. Two modes of visualization are supported: static and dynamic. The client is developed based on Microsoft's AJAX plug-ins for the Bing Maps with a) Bing Maps serving as the background map for the SWP, and b) Bing Maps controlling visualization of service data. This paper is focused on the interface design and challenges in development. Experience and challenges are discussed to assist future developments in geospatial web service clients.

Power system visualization is a technology combining power science with multi-disciplinary science, which integrates with computer graphics, and geography, ergonomics and other disciplines. Power system visualization provides a vivid way for the engineer to study energy management system in a variety of means. This paper presented a framework of visualization platform in power system, around the supporting platform technology and hierarchical display technology of visualization. By comparison, we make decision on graphics development kit. Two-dimension and three-dimension visualization techniques are demonstrated in this paper. These visualization techniques enrich power system visualization. Hierarchical tree view and multi-theme window display technology are presented for more information. By using this framework of visualization, dispatcher can find problem in time and take appropriate measures. The visualization platform has been applied in the China's smart power grid construction and brings significant social and economic benefits. The visualization platform hugely enhanced dispatch level of power system, and is helpful to transfer traditional dispatching into intelligent dispatching.

Sensor data integration is crucial for the analysis and identification of environmental patterns. In this research project, publicly available datasets of environmental sensor data are integrated with Google Earth. Information on environmental patterns is identified, analyzed, and presented on the Web in response to user queries. This prototype demonstrates how sensor data can be integrated with Google Earth to enable the geographic and temporal context display of environmental data, with an interactive format, for users to analyze and identify environmental patterns in real-time.

Frequency-based statistical charts are the most widespread visualizations and the preferred of Infovis novices. They are important in depicting categorical data and providing data abstraction on large datasets. The drill down feature enables better visual scaling by allowing navigation through aggregation hierarchies. In this paper we discuss design considerations that impact on the usability in drill down charts. We develop a tool based on pie chart in order to illustrate the discussion. Moreover, we suggest visual representations and an interaction model. Finally, we provide evidence on the benefit of using such techniques for visual analysis of categorical data through a short usability study.

Sleep disturbances are among the most distressing of all Alzheimer's disease related symptoms. In some cases, however, the sleep disturbance may be a marker for early Alzheimer's disease. In this paper we present a sleep pattern detection and visualization system developed to support the monitoring of sleep patterns and assessment of sleep disturbances for people diagnosed with dementia, at the early stages of the disease. The system provides visual tool kits for caregivers to view the sleep profiles and for investigators to analyse sleep patterns based on sensory data gathered at users' home via the telecare service.

The visualization of software systems allows a software developer to build a mental model of the program supporting her to better understand its design and functionality. This research aims at studying current visualization techniques and practices to propose a set of principles for designing effective software architecture visualization techniques, focusing on their support for program comprehension. The research will be carried out in three main phases. First, we will complement current works by proposing a taxonomy of visualization techniques. The second contribution will be to identify different requirements and characteristics of architecture visualization techniques. Finally, to evaluate software visualization's usability and effectiveness in practice, we will measure the performance of developers in terms of their percentage of the correct answers and effort developers spend to answer given questions. To compute the developer's effort, we will use eye-tracker's data.

This paper introduces a new exploratory framework to identify and estimate the local characteristics associated with the distribution of the distances and the directions for the movements. The focus of attention is paid to hundreds and thousands individual records of movement. Traditional methods were either unable to handle the vast data or limited to search the global “law”. As an initial work, the framework focuses on the origin-destination form of movements, which is parallel to a vector composed by distance and direction. The analysis is working on the distribution of such two elements, with the stressing on how the distribution is differentiated over space. By stressing the local variation, it quantitatively estimates the difference between the patterns for global data and for local data.
