Cognitive overload, confusion and disorientation are common drawbacks in e-learning. To cope with these difficulties, this work suggests a course structure focused on the activity. This proposal also tries to help learners by improving guidance and interaction with the structure by means of information visualization techniques, which have proven to be useful in other domains. Students would carry out their learning process through a set of activities, which can be accessed from four information spaces (i.e. competences and objectives, scheduling, table of contents and assessment). Hence, this proposal should help students in their daily work.

An ocean of data is available on the web. From this ocean of data, information can in theory be extracted and used by analysts for detecting emergent trends (trend spotting). However, to do this manually is a daunting and nearly impossible task. We describe a semi-automatic system in which data is automatically collected from selected sources, and to which linguistic analysis is applied to extract e.g., entities and events. After combining the extracted information with human intelligence reports, the results are visualized to the user of the system who can interact with it in order to obtain a better awareness of historic as well as emergent trends. A prototype of the proposed system has been implemented and some initial results are presented in the paper.

Fluorescence time-lapse microscopic imaging is a powerful tool for investigating dynamic cellular processes. To date, automated fluorescence microscopes are increasingly used to generate high-content spatial-temporal image data at high-throughput. Such large-scale data require much computational effort to quantify complex macromolecular dynamics such as temporal changes in fluorescence intensity, spatial locations, trajectory and velocity. Here, we propose a semi-automated method for tracking dynamics of individual macromolecules and performed quantitative analysis of the extracted phenotypes. We compared our proposed method with the manual identification of macromolecules and with a particle tracking method provided by the image analysis software, ImageJ. Our results clearly provide more object trajectories than the ImageJ method and our phenotypic analysis illustrates the relationship between two significant features with human-interpretable visualization.

One of the major accompaniments of the globalization is the rapid growing of urban areas. At the end of the 1970th only 38% of world lived in cities, this number increased to more than 50% by 2008. In 2030 two third of all people worldwide are expected to live in cities, many of them in megacities. Urban sprawl is a major environmental concern affecting cities and urban. Urban sprawl depends on the socio-economic situation in the cities. Thus, reducing migration, sustainable handling of the limited resources and smart growth are acknowledged as key tasks for urban planning. Coping with these tasks requires precise and adaptive planning instruments. The presented study is part of the research project GAUS (Gaining Additional Urban Space) aiming at inventorying the open space available in urban environments and, moreover, providing flexible multi-criteria spatial decision support system for its development. The method is based on VHR (Very high resolution) optical satellite data (QuickBird (QB) and IKONOS (IK)) which is applied on three study areas: Berlin, Istanbul, and Ruhr Area. Object-based image analysis is applied to map land cover and land use and derive metrics describing urban form and inner-urban structure on multiple scales. The workflow has been standardized and leads to comparable results across different test sites and datasets. In intersection with available GIS (Geographical Information System) and local ancillary data, the outputs of image analysis serve as input for a multi-criteria spatial decision support system. Flexible multi-criteria spatial decision support (MC-SDSS) tool has been created by using MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) software and its tools (Mapping toolbox etc.). Users can change their weights and parameters with this tool for their different study areas. Urban planners can use final suitability maps of this tool. Thus complex decisions are supported by numerical calculation and spatial visualization in order to come to objective solutio

data mining techniques are becoming indispensable as the amount and complexity of available data is rapidly growing. Visual data mining techniques attempt to include a human observer in the loop and leverage human perception for knowledge extraction. This is commonly allowed by performing a dimensionality reduction into a visually easy-to-perceive 2D space, which might result in significant loss of important spatial and topological information. To address this issue, this paper presents the design and implementation of a unique 3D visual data mining framework - CAVE-SOM. The CAVE-SOM system couples the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm with the immersive Cave Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE). The main advantages of the CAVE-SOM system are: i) utilizing a 3D SOM to perform dimensionality reduction of large multi-dimensional datasets, ii) immersive visualization of the trained 3D SOM, iii) ability to explore and interact with the multi-dimensional data in an intuitive and natural way. The CAVE-SOM system uses multiple visualization modes to guide the visual data mining process, for instance the data histograms, U-matrix, connections, separations, uniqueness and the input space view. The implemented CAVE-SOM framework was validated on several benchmark problems and then successfully applied to analysis of wind-power generation data. The knowledge extracted using the CAVE-SOM system can be used for further informed decision making and machine learning.

In the paper, a general overview of the Copernicus system is given. Copernicus is a tool for computer-aided diagnosis of mental disorders based on personality inventories. The tool was designed for the Java platform. There have been selected and implemented different quantitative groups of methods useful for differential interprofile diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to present the capabilities of the software tool created for effective and specialized analysis of psychometric data to support psychologists in diagnostic decision making.

Traditionally, the visual analysis of hierarchies, respectively, trees, is conducted by focusing on one given hierarchy. However, in many research areas multiple, differing hierarchies need to be analyzed simultaneously in a comparative way - in particular to highlight differences between them, which sometimes can be subtle. A prominent example is the analysis of so-called phylogenetic trees in biology, reflecting hierarchical evolutionary relationships among a set of organisms. Typically, the analysis considers multiple phylogenetic trees, either to account for statistical significance or for differences in derivation of such evolutionary hierarchies; for example, based on different input data, such as the 16S ribosomal RNA and protein sequences of highly conserved enzymes. The simultaneous analysis of a collection of such trees leads to more insight into the evolutionary process. We introduce a novel visual analytics approach for the comparison of multiple hierarchies focusing on both global and local structures. A new tree comparison score has been elaborated for the identification of interesting patterns. We developed a set of linked hierarchy views showing the results of automatic tree comparison on various levels of details. This combined approach offers detailed assessment of local and global tree similarities. The approach was developed in close cooperation with experts from the evolutionary biology domain. We apply it to a phylogenetic data set on bacterial ancestry, demonstrating its application benefit.

IT support organizations are in charge of restoring normal operations after IT service disruptions and can be complex systems. Thire performance assessment and optimization is an extremely challenging task that requires considering organization-specific structure, behavior, and business-level objectives. This paper presents Symian-Web, a decision support tool that enables IT managers to assess and improve IT support organization performance. Symian-Web features advanced information visualization concepts and metaphors, allowing for precise and timely assessment of IT support organization performance, and facilitating their redesign.
