The ordered order-k Voronoi diagram is a popular generalization of the ordinary Voronoi diagram modeling ordered k nearest sites. Despite of the usefulness of the ordered order-k Voronoi diagram, its structural complexity and wealth of information captured result in poor readability. Most research has focused on computational complexity, and visualization/representation of the ordered order-k Voronoi diagram has received little attention. This paper attempts to represent the ordered order-k Voronoi diagram through its relationship with other higher order Voronoi diagrams. The proposed method highlights topo-logical relationships between/among higher order Voronoi diagram families, and enhances the readability of the ordered order-k diagram.

The use of mobile devices as vital equipment for accessing information on-demand will continue to grow. Presenting requested information effectively on a small screen device is a challenging yet important area of active study. We have developed a prototype system that produces an outline of a web page through visual abstraction. This graphical illustration visualizes the structural layout, characteristics of components, and distributional pattern of search terms in a web document compactly and intuitively. Unlike traditional approaches that display an overview of a web document with an image-based thumbnail, the proposed system shows information using geometric shapes which decrease the data required to present the information. A usability test evaluating users' acceptance of the visualized web contents was conducted. In several areas the participants showed a higher degree of satisfaction using the proposed approach to address the difficulties in exploring web documents on a small screen device. Participants also expressed their preferences and opinions which will be valuable resources in finding future research directions.

Petroleum reservoir modeling integrates multi-discipline research works which involve much more data type, huge data and complex data-flow. It is very important to bring the spatial data-mining(SDM) method into reservoir modeling. According to the characterization of reservoir modeling procedure, spatial data-mining can be used in reservoir geological research and ranking reservoir modeling. Geo-statistical method, spatial analysis method, visualizing method and non-linear method are the most effective methods for reservoir modeling based on the type of reservoir knowledge. Spatial-overlapping method is used for studying the relationship between sedimentary micro-facies and oil production with statistical method. The distribution knowledge of sedimentary micro-facies is built by geo-statistical method. The visualization method is used for checking the exactness of reservoir model. The application in Wenxi I Block of Tuha oil field is shown that spatial data-mining technology not only improves the efficient of reservoir modeling, but also verifies the knowledge obtained from each researching stage so as to guarantee the integrality and exactness of reservoir knowledge.

A novel technique to explore functional connectivity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented. Source localization is performed prior to connectivity analysis, allowing identification of the cortical regions involved. This technique controls for point-spread in the minimum norm inverse solution by generating a null distribution with noise data. data from an auditory attention task reveals that in the alpha-frequency range, cortical activity in the auditory cortices is coherent with frontal eye fields, areas known to be engaged during other attention tasks. Maps generated with this technique allow visualization of inter-areal connectivity to pre-defined regions-of-interest.

This paper presents a "change'n play" software architecture in order to realize user-centric aspects for, integrated engineering analysis tasks within immersive environments. The proposed architecture has been designed to enable conceptual simulations performed on an engineering mock-up. Major attention is given to the realization of modules and functionalities going far beyond traditional post-processing capabilities, establishing a user centric problem solving environment. It allows closed turn-around simulation-to-visualization loops as well as an inclusion of traditional point-and-click legacy systems, steered from an immersive environment and providing interchangeable mechanism. Existing research work addresses only different aspects, even worse neither does provide a holistic approach nor does show on how to actually do it. Aim of this paper is therefore, to propose and develop an architectural blueprint, supporting "what-if" reasoning with respect to preliminary design analysis objectives: Executed within one single point of access and based on a distributed, hybrid 2D legacy system/VR interactive environment.

A new and emerging paradigm in molecular biology is revealing that RNA is implicated in nearly every aspect of the metabolism in the cell. To enhance our understanding of the function of these RNA molecules in the cell, it is essential that we have a complete understanding of their higher-order structures. While many computational tools have been developed to predict and analyse these higher-order RNA structures, few are able to visualize them for analytical purposes. In this paper, we present an interactive visualization tool of the secondary structure of RNA, named RNA2DMap. This program enables multiple-dimensions of information about RNA structure to be selected, customized and displayed to visually identify patterns and relationships. RNA2DMap facilitates the comparative analysis and understanding of RNAs that cannot be readily obtained with other graphical or text output from computer programs. Three use cases are presented to illustrate how RNA2DMap aids structural analysis.

Safety signal detection problems in pharmacovigilance are examined in the general context of data fusion systems. The general perspective reveals commonalities between seemingly disparate fields of endeavor, and it suggests methods and technologies that may provide a “way forward” to advance to state of the art. Such insights are examined for exploring safety signal detection problems in (passive) pharmacovigilance using cross-functional data such as product complaint, medical inquiries, and adverse event databases. This paper discusses the definition of signal and safety signal, and issues that arise in assertion of signal present in the pharmacovigilance setting. visualization methods for understanding correlations that suggest the presence of signal are considered. A multivariate correlation statistic is proposed to elucidate possible joint dependencies across multiple data streams.

The number of modes in a kernel density estimation of a certain data distribution is strongly dependent on the chosen scale parameter. In this paper, we present an interactive mode tree visualization that allows to visually analyze the modality structure of a data distribution. Due to the branched structure of the bivariate mode tree, composed of many curved arcs in 3D, we need to utilize advanced techniques, including clutter removal through transparency, on demand outlier suppression or preservation, and best views, to improve the legibility of the visualization mapping.
