Terrain data is important data source in the 3D geographic visualization system. The key problem to browse global terrain data in network environment is to organize, transform and display data in a quick and efficient way. This paper introduces some of the key techniques in the global terrain visualization. The simplified global terrain data partition and organizing method is adopted. Some optimization strategies in data dispatch and net delivery are also introduced. The experiment shows that these technique solutions are effective to solve the problem in global terrain visualization in C/S mode. ©2009 IEEE.

A distance template for octree traversal in CPU-based volume ray casting

Several optimization techniques have been proposed to improve the speed of direct volume rendering. A hierarchical representation formed by an octree is a data structure to skip over transparent regions while requiring little preprocessing and data storage. However, in order to skip over an octant estimated to be transparent (a transparent octant), the distance from a boundary to another boundary of the octant should be calculated. Because the distance computation is expensive, we propose a precomputed data structure, the distance template, which stores direction and distance values from one boundary voxel on a face to all the boundary voxels on the remaining five faces. In the rendering step, if a ray reaches a transparent octant, it leaps over the octant by referring to the stored distance value.

Writing high performance software requires the programmer to take advantage of multi-core processing. This can be done through tools like OpenMP, which allow the programmer to mark parallel loops. Identifying parallelizable loops, however, is a non-trivial task. Furthermore, transformations can be applied to a loop nest to expose parallelism. Polyhedral compilation has become an increasingly popular technique for exposing parallelism in computationally intensive loop nests. These techniques can simultaneously optimize for a number of performance parameters (i.e. parallelism, locality, etc). This is typically done using a cost model designed to give good performance in the general case. For some problems, the compiler may miss optimization opportunities or even produce a transformation that leads to worse performance. In these cases, the user has little recourse, since there are few options for the user to affect the transformation decisions. In this paper we present PUMA-V, a visualization interface that helps the user understand and affect the transformations made by R-Stream, an industrial strength optimizing compiler based on the polyhedral model. This tool visualizes performance heuristics and runtime performance statistics to help the user identify missed optimization opportunities. Changes to the transformed code can be made by directly manipulating the visualizations. We show an example where performance is greatly improved over the polyhedral model alone by using our tool.

The questions regarding the improvement of the learning system and the perfection of the quality are highly important in the work of teachers of mathematics at universities. One of the possibilities to make students interested to study mathematics is presenting the material by using its visualization. visualization in teaching mathematics can be a powerful tool to explore mathematical problems and to imagine mathematical concepts and the relationship between them, to perform mathematical experiments and simulations. The paper is devoted to the authors' experience in using visualization techniques in teaching mathematics. There are many different software packages that can be used for creating illustrations or/and animations for problems from different study courses. The talk deals with such special tools as GeoGebra, Mathematical visualization Toolkit (MVT), Microsoft Project, RStudio, Java Modelling Tools (JVT). By discussing some specific examples of problems from Mathematical Analysis, Methods of optimization, Operations Research, Numerical Methods, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, the authors show how the considered tools could be effectively used for illustration of theoretical results or solving problems during the practical works. The possibility to use the mentioned tools for the analysis of real-world systems working out study projects and bachelor's theses is also discussed.

Unsteady 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results can be very large. Some recent solutions exceed 100 gigabytes. visualization techniques that access the entire data set will, therefore, be excruciatingly slow. We show that particle tracing in vector fields calculated from disk resident solutions can be accomplished in O(number-of-particles) time, i.e., visualization time is independent of solution size. This is accomplished using memory mapped files to avoid unnecessary disk IO, and lazy evaluation of calculated vector fields to avoid unnecessary CPU operations. A C++ class hierarchy implements lazy evaluation such that visualization algorithms are unaware that the vector field is not stored in memory. A numerical experiment conducted on two solutions differing in size by a factor of 100 showed that particle tracing times varied by only 10-30 percent. Other visualization techniques that do not access the entire solution should also benefit from memory mapping and lazy evaluation.

The development of a physical building control center can support project management and -control to optimize the flow of the complex processes at a construction site. The concept consists of equipping vehicles with sensors and using VR and AR-techniques to visualize this realtime information and allow an optical adaption to current circumstances. The result will be shown by a more efficient utilization and enhanced cost effectiveness. To analyse what is required you always start by clarifying the relevant object to be presented in VR. The instrument chosen was interview. The second step is to work out the necessary way of computing, viewing and manipulating this data. Finally a hardware setting is designed that would probably fulfill the derived requirements. The results of the interviews are presented. By processing these data the information and objects, which shall be visualized within the use case of a control center as well as in an on-site use case, are elaborated and also introduced. For these reasons hardware settings are analyzed and the basis for an implementation is established.

Mathematical modeling and computer-based simulation of electrical fields in the heart provide important insights into the cardiac electrophysiological behavior. Streamline based techniques are frequently applied for visualization of these electrical fields. In this work we present a new automated technique for placement of seed points of streamlines. The technique is based on a sequential optimization algorithm. In each step a set of random seed points is created. A single point of these is selected, which is optimal in such a manner that the distribution of density of streamlines fits best to the distribution of electrical current density. The iteration ends, when a pre-given number of streamlines was generated. Several examples illustrate the characteristic properties of the technique in electrical fields of small complexity. Additionally, results from a bidomain simulation of excitation propagation are visualized.

The explosive growth of video data in the modern era has set the stage for research in the field of video summarization, which attempts to abstract the salient frames in a video in order to provide an easily interpreted synopsis. Existing work on video summarization has primarily been static - that is, the algorithms require the summary length to be specified as an input parameter. However, video streams are inherently dynamic in nature;while some of them are relatively simple in terms of visual content, others are much more complex due to camera/object motion, changing illumination, cluttered scenes and low quality. This necessitates the development of adaptive summarization techniques, which adapt to the complexity of a video and generate a summary accordingly. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to address this problem. We pose the summary selection as an optimization problem and derive an efficient technique to solve the summary length and the specific frames to be selected, through a single formulation. Our extensive empirical studies on a wide range of challenging, unconstrained videos demonstrate tremendous promise in using this method for real-world video summarization applications.

Cache locality optimization is an efficient way for reducing the idle time of modern processors in waiting for needed data. This kind of optimization can be achieved either on the side of programmers or compilers with code level optimization or at system level through appropriate schemes, like reconfigurable cache organization and adequate prefetching or replacement strategies. For the former users need to know the problem, the reason, and the solution, while for the latter a platform is required for evaluating proposed and novel *** existing simulation systems do not provide such information and platforms, we implemented a cache simulator that models the complete cache hierarchy and associated techniques. More specifically, it analyzes the feature of cache miss and provides information about the runtime accesses to data structures and the cache access behavior. Together with a visualization tool, this information enables the user to detect access hotspots and optimization strategies for tackling them. For supporting the study of different techniques with respect to cache configuration and management, this simulator models a variety of cache line replacement and prefetching policies, and allows the user to specify any cache organization, including cache size, cache set size, block size, and associativity. The simulator hence forms a research platform for investigating the influence of these techniques on the execution behavior of applications. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Several technical and management disciplines are involved with complex system development and product life cycle management. Often they work in isolation leading to inconsistencies in product specifications, information, and challenges in decisionmaking. Differences across disciplines in their respective practices, techniques, tools, system metrics, and lack of a common platform for exchanging information have contributed to this gap. Attempts to bridge the gap between systems engineering and project management have been sought through project management methods and through imposing practices from one discipline onto another. It is proposed that a more rigorous approach to bridging this gap be investigated to better enable optimization of objectives, collaboration and cooperation amongst the multiple disciplines. The disciplines of interest in this study are plant modeling, systems engineering, and program management. In bridging the gap, both leveraging techniques and management tools from the different disciplines and adopting six sigma statistical methods are investigated. Common and unique system performance measurements are investigated in working toward a common language. Shared outcome-based measurements such as system and component operational capability levels, predicted and achieved, are also proposed. Options to bring together models from each discipline include multi-disciplinary system design optimization. The different management platforms and visualization techniques are explored with the goal to adopt a common platform to share information. The governance structure that would enable sharing of information across the disciplines forms part of this research.
