The exploration and analysis of data mining methodologies is an important task for effective knowledge discovery, especially in today's heterogeneous information networks. Previously presented approaches for mining optimization aim primarily at the improvements of time complexity, space complexity, accuracy, and robustness. We extend the state-of-the-art method by concentrating on user-availability and algorithm understandability. Specifically, we use Rankclus, a classic clustering algorithm as an example. After uncovering the unseen computing processes to be displayed in a visual form, the whole clustering processes are transparent to the users, which may help them more clearly and quickly understand how the algorithms are computed, how does each object influence one another. In addition, we use a density approach to intuitively simplify the discovery of data patterns, and through the visualized results, users can adjust algorithm parameters with or without professional training. Finally, we use another two visual techniques to improve the visualization quality: a heatmap matrix designed for checking the similarities of objects which are in the same cluster, and a DOItree implemented to further analyze the accuracy of the algorithms.

The energy resource management problem is regarded with great importance in the energy domain due to the current transformation of the electrical grid as a result of the growth of smart grid technologies. In this situation, conventional formulations created for an entirely different scenario occasionally fail to address the issue effectively. Modern metaheuristic optimizers are a powerful tool for handling such issues when old techniques fail. This work proposes a user-friendly web Meta-ERM platform for metaheuristic optimization when solving a given case study's energy resource management problem and allows the visualization of performance analysis.

This paper presents Direct Volume Rendering (DVR) improvement strategies, which provide new opportunities for scientific and medical visualization which are not available in due measure in analogues: 1) multi-volume rendering in a single space of up to 3 volumetric datasets determined in different coordinate systems and having sizes as big as up to 512×512×512 16-bit values;2) performing the above process in real time on a middle class GPU, e. g. nVidia GeForce GTS 250 512 MB;3) a custom bounding mesh for more accurate selection of the desired region in addition to the clipping bounding box;4) simultaneous usage of a number of visualization techniques including the shaded Direct Volume Rendering via the 1D- or 2D- transfer functions, multiple semi-transparent discrete iso-surfaces visualization, MIP, and MIDA. The paper discusses how the new properties affect the implementation of the DVR. In the DVR implementation we use such optimization strategies as the early ray termination and the empty space skipping. The clipping ability is also used as the empty space skipping approach to the rendering performance improvement. We use the random ray start position generation and the further frame accumulation in order to reduce the rendering artifacts. The rendering quality can be also improved by the on the-fly tri-cubic filtering during the rendering process. Our framework supports 4 different stereoscopic visualization modes. Finally we outline the visualization performance in terms of the frame rates for different visualization techniques on different graphic cards.

Traditional methods in black-box optimization often prescribe general-purpose algorithms for broad problem categories, which overlooks the significant variability in optimization landscapes that can exist even within a single domain. We address this gap by demonstrating the efficacy of landscape analysis techniques in guiding the choice and tuning of optimization algorithms for distinct landscape features. This study focuses on two real-world problem domains characterized by blackbox simulation-based optimization: automotive control system calibration (anti-lock braking system) and automotive crashworthiness optimization. Through comparative analysis of computer experiments in these domains, landscape analysis techniques are employed for both visualization and explanation purposes. The results reveal substantial variations in landscape features across different instances within the same problem domain. Consequently, we advocate for a paradigm shift towards learning and applying optimizers tailored to specific landscape feature spaces rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach to an entire problem domain. This research not only enhances the understanding of landscape variability in optimization problems but also paves the way for more efficient and effective optimization processes in complex, real-world scenarios.

optimization of similarity metrics is an important component of many biomedical image registration applications that greatly affects registration outcome. Selection of an optimization approach is dependent on the modalities being registered, the characteristics of the similarity function, and available computational resources. This paper addresses optimization approaches for 2D and 3D rigid body intra- and multimodal ultrasound registration. Stochastic and direct techniques are compared for mutual information and correlation ratio functions. A new direct/stochastic hybrid approach based on the tabu search is also proposed. visualization and experimental results suggest the usefulness of such an approach. Results also show that the tabu hybrid technique compares favorably with traditional techniques, based on accuracy and number of function evaluations.

Dealing with high-dimensional time series data makes the process of recommending visualizations with "interesting" insights difficult. The challenge originates from finding a way to obtain the recommended visualizations efficiently without compromising their quality. Identifying such visualizations manually is considered a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. In response, this paper introduces different techniques designed to optimize the automated recommendation process. These techniques are entirely based on the concept of computation sharing and pruning. Furthermore, we provide a glimpse into our future research works in PhD thesis. The objective is to broaden the scope of our current work and enhance the generality of our problem statement.

Given the existing heterogeneous processor landscape dominated by CPUs and GPUs, topics such as programming productivity and performance portability have become increasingly important. In this context, an important question refers to how can we develop optimization strategies that cover both CPUs and GPUs. We answer this for fastsg, a library that provides functionality for handling efficiently high-dimensional functions. As it can be employed for compressing and decompressing large-scale simulation data, it finds itself at the core of a computational steering application which serves us as test case. We describe our experience with implementing fastsg's time critical routines for Intel CPUs and Nvidia Fermi GPUs. We show the differences and especially the similarities between our optimization strategies for the two architectures. With regard to our test case for which achieving high speedups is a "must" for real-time visualization, we report a speedup of up to 6.2x times compared to the state-of-the-art implementation of the sparse grid technique for GPUs.

The automated optimization of declarative SQL queries is a classical problem that has been diligently addressed by the database community over several decades. However, due to its inherent complexities and challenges, the topic has largely remained a "black art", and the quality of the query optimizer continues to be a key differentiator between competing database products, with large technical teams involved in their design and implementation. Over the past few years, a fresh perspective on the behavior of modern query optimizers has arisen through the introduction and development of the "plan diagram" concept. A plan diagram is a visual representation of the plan choices made by the optimizer over a space of input parameters, such as relational selectivities. In this tutorial, we provide a detailed walk-through of plan diagrams, their processing, and their applications. We begin by showcasing a variety of plan diagrams that provide intriguing insights into current query optimizer implementations. A suite of techniques for efficiently producing plan diagrams are then outlined. Subsequently, we present a suite of post-processing algorithms that take optimizer plan diagrams as input, and output new diagrams with demonstrably superior query processing characteristics, such as robustness to estimation errors. Following up, we explain how these offline characteristics can be internalized in the query optimizer, resulting in an intrinsically improved optimizer that directly produces high-quality plan diagrams. Finally, we enumerate a variety of open technical problems, and promising future research directions. All the plan diagrams in the tutorial are sourced from popular industrial-strength query optimizers operating on benchmark decision-support environments, and will be graphically displayed on the Picasso visualization platform.
