There has been an increasing demand to understand and describe Evolutionary computing techniques. Information visualization may contribute with interactive data visualizations that help explore the population of individual solutions over the data search space and generations, convergent behavior, individual fitness, the dynamic of the evolutionary process among other possible scenarios. Although there are previous works on the use of visualization to analyze evolutionary techniques, there has been little diversity among the approached visualization techniques. Also, most related works consider only genetic algorithms and ignore other evolutionary approaches. Therefore the goal of this paper is to suggest the appropriate InfoVis techniques for the analyzed scenarios to better understand the behavior of Evolutionary computing algorithms. Furthermore, we present a case study that applies the proposed scenarios to AutoClustering, a tool based on Estimation of Distribution Algorithms. We hope the proposed scenarios and techniques provide a set of good practices for the analysis of Evolutionary computing techniques.

In this paper we present a preliminary version of a new software MkBGFire which is being developed for forest fire spread simulations specific to Bulgarian vegetation. The MkBGFire software is based on the paradigm of the game method for modelling. The game method for modelling is a variant of cellular automata modelling, and similar approaches have gained popularity in the last decade due to the ease of use and their relative simplicity. In particular, they use either square or hexagonal grid. The software presented here is based on a mathematical model and both approaches, vector models and cellular automata models, are implemented. The MkBGFire software uses the OpenGL technology for 2D and 3D visualization of the cells of the game model. Implemented in the preliminary version of the MkBGFire are the following parameters: for the size of the forest cells and the type of the cells – hexagon and square;for control of the speed and the angle of the wind, which is currently constant for the whole terrain;some advanced parameters for control of the fire model. We illustrate the feasibility of the software with some examples using different cell types, forest layouts and wind conditions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

biomedical imaging assumes a significant function in different applications, such as early diagnosis, surgery, and classification. In general, the captured image is affected by noise, voltage, temperature fluctuations, and environmental conditions. Before image processing, the image must be pre-processed and unwanted pixel deviation should be removed to obtain a more accurate result. In image classification, the accuracy is directly proportional to the quality of the input image. This paper suggests a new way to remove speckle noise from input images using Glowworm Swarm optimization (GSO) and Wavelet Packet Transformation (WPT). The proposed technique is tested with several sample images and results were obtained with improved quality metrics. Various quality metrics such as Mean Square Error (MSE), Structural Similarity Index Metrics (SSIM), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) are used to evaluate performance. From the analysis of the results, the proposed technique accomplishes better visual quality than the traditional methods.

Background: Remote measurement technologies (RMT) such as mobile health devices and apps are increasingly used by those living with chronic neurological and mental health conditions. RMT enables real-world data collection and regular feedback, providing users with insights about their own conditions. Data visualizations are an integral part of RMT, although little is known about visualization design preferences from the perspectives of those living with chronic conditions. Objective: The aim of this review was to explore the experiences and preferences of individuals with chronic neurological and mental health conditions on data visualizations derived from RMT to manage health. Methods: In this systematic review, we searched peer-reviewed literature and conference proceedings (PubMed, IEEE Xplore, EMBASE, Web of Science, Association for computing Machinery Computer-Human Interface proceedings, and the Cochrane Library) for original papers published between January 2007 and September 2021 that reported perspectives on data visualization of people living with chronic neurological and mental health conditions. Two reviewers independently screened each abstract and full-text article, with disagreements resolved through discussion. Studies were critically appraised, and extracted data underwent thematic synthesis. Results: We identified 35 eligible publications from 31 studies representing 12 conditions. Coded data coalesced into 3 themes: desire for data visualization, impact of visualizations on condition management, and visualization design considerations. Data visualizations were viewed as an integral part of users' experiences with RMT, impacting satisfaction and engagement. However, user preferences were diverse and often conflicting both between and within conditions. Conclusions: When used effectively, data visualizations are valuable, engaging components of RMT. 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a method to assess the functional capacity of patients with heart and lung diseases. A patient must walk the longest distance possible within 6 minutes while a physician will record the related data during the session for interpretation afterward. The walking sessions are usually done in medical institutions with prepared equipment and location. Therefore, performing the 6MWT at home either by the patients themselves or during home visits is cumbersome. Accordingly, to expand this limitation, ideas of performing the outdoor 6MWT have been proposed. This article introduced Walkaholic, an internet-of-things (IoT) - based 6MWT platform. The platform works as a combination of a portable device, cloud storage, and software application. This development aims to provide services, such as timing, data recording, and visualization as a tool for further studies and investigations of the outdoor 6MWT. The data, including GPS coordinates, pulse rate (PR), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and perfusion index (PI), are recorded during sessions of the outdoor 6MWT and sent to the cloud storage server. The software application allows physicians to access the recorded data remotely. Additional data, for instance, 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), walking speed, and acceleration, can be calculated as outcomes of the recorded data that give the physicians more information for accurately interpreting the results of the outdoor 6MWT.

Digital Twins (DTs) and Virtual Reality (VR) have recently gained significant popularity. The term digital twin refers to a virtual representation of a real-world environment. DTs are known for providing intuitive, accurate, and real-time visualizations of complex physical systems. In this paper, we present a novel, cloud-based framework for creating digital twin environments using VR within a cloud environment. We demonstrate our framework with two real-world case studies inspired by clinical insights obtained from experts in post-stroke rehabilitation. In the case of rehabilitation, sessions within virtual scenarios mimicking patients’ everyday life may significantly improve their rehabilitation quality. Inspired by biofeedback, we used a digital twin in VR to allow patients to enhance hand stability using real-time data streaming. Our second case study demonstrated the utility of our approach for allowing patients to more comfortably navigate within their homes by generating a virtual twin of an apartment. Our work is designed to transcend the boundary between reality and virtuality by letting users interact directly with the real and virtual worlds simultaneously. To achieve real-time synchronization between the real and the virtual environments, we established an infrastructure blueprint that features efficient sensor data collection, streaming, processing, and storage in a secure cloud environment. Data may then be accessed from any site, directly from the cloud, to update the virtual environment. In the end, we show that our infrastructure is generalizable across clinically-relevant tasks. We hope to extend our work to other areas that would benefit from a digital twin-based VR space.

With the aging of the population becoming more and more serious, the safety problem of the elderly has become increasingly prominent. In order to better protect the life safety of the elderly, a set of portable and wearable mobile terminal is designed for monitoring the elderly's vital signs, with STM32 as the main controller, and related sensors being used to collect the elderly's parameters such as the blood pressure, oxygen saturation and CEG, etc., as well as the precise positioning of the elderly, ensuring that the elderly receive timely assistance if they fall down. This system would build a cloud platform to visualize the vital sign data of the elderly, which is convenient for managers to adapt afterwards. After experimental verification, this system is proved to be effective on monitoring the vital signs of the elderly, being aware of the poor state of the elderly, and notifying the relevant rescuers in time.

User studies are indispensable for visualization application papers in order to assess the value and limitations of the presented approach. Important aspects are how well depth and shape information can be perceived, as coding of these aspects is essential to enable an understandable representation of complex 3D data. In practice, there is usually little time to perform such studies, and the establishment and conduction of user studies can be labour-intensive. In addition, it can be difficult to reach enough participants to obtain expressive results regarding the quality of different visualization techniques. In this paper, we propose a framework that allows visualization researchers to quickly create task based user studies on depth and shape perception for different surface visualizations and perform the resulting tasks via a web interface. With our approach, the effort for generating user studies is reduced and at the same time the web-based component allows researchers to attract more participants to their study. We demonstrate our framework by applying shape and depth evaluation tasks to visualizations of various surface representations used in many technical and biomedical applications. In recent years, the Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) technology has attracted attention as a support technology that improves medical experience and management efficiency. However, the performance of most VIO systems will drop drastically when the light intensity changes significantly or there are few texture features from the images. This paper designs a visual-inertial fusion-based navigation Indoor Positioning system to deal with the challenging scenario. It loosely coupled an inertial sensor-based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) model with the VIO model via a robust particle filter. The state estimation of the particle filter is based on the PDR model. The VIO model is used for the measurements of the particle filter. It compensates the gross errors of the VIO with a visual error propagation model which is established according to the posterior observation residuals of visual feature points. It is verified through experiments that the PDR/VIO fusion indoor positioning system based on the robust particle filter implemented in this paper has improved positioning accuracy and strong ability to deal with complex scenes.
