While effective therapy cannot be delivered without the appropriate equipment and instrumentation that enables access to the internal organs and tissues under minimally invasive conditions, real-time visualization and navigation information is critical to guide the instruments to the correct targets and manipulate the diseased tissues in absence of direct vision. Over the past decades, thanks to the advances in medical image acquisition, visualization and display, surgical tracking and image computing infrastructure, a wide variety of technology has emerged that facilitates diagnosis, procedure planning, intra-operative guidance and treatment monitoring while providing safer and less invasive approaches for therapy delivery. Nevertheless, successful exploitation, use and integration of the multi-modality images and signals available from both pre- and intra-operative sources require the development and validation of engineering tools that allow users to extract critical information for decision making during planning, visualization, guidance or training. This article serves as a quick snapshot of various applications of biomedical imaging and modeling, their integration into platforms for planning and guidance of interventions, and their potential to develop new paradigms for virtual anatomy visualization for simulation, teaching and training applications. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In the current scenario of biomedical Research, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images visual analytics processing applications are facing challenges of the use of different techniques under different frameworks supported by different software tools. The establishment of different frameworks under different software tools and migration of data from one framework to another as well as one tool or environment to another poses critical difficulties and large time consumption. To reduce this hassle, the need of common framework is identified and the same is undertaken in this work. To address this issue, a framework MRI Image Pattern Detection Framework (MIPDF) is proposed to take care for the reduction of cited hassle and improved visual analytics to support medical professionals in their act of detection and diagnosis of diseases by identifying regularity and irregularity with improved visualization and analytics results.

With the development of computing capability and display size in computing hardware, mobile terminals like iPhone or iPad have been more and more accepted as a tool to help radiologists to examine medical images of patients in order to give more accurate diagnostic conclusion through server. The radiologists can observe the images by interacting them with different hand gestures to translate, rotate and zoom in or out the objects in the medical images of the mobile terminals. However, because of the requirements of remote medical, we need a system that should have one kind of function-collaboration, which means that when different radiologists located at different places hold a remote teleconference to discuss the same medical images for difficult miscellaneous disease, one expert wishes that when he changes the position of object in the images the other experts will see the changes at once so that they can keep accordance all the time to talk over the focus with voice communication and other auxiliary tools. This paper developed a remote and collaborative medical image visualization system where medical experts can work collaboratively with each other. In the proposed application, the server system can file the data of patients like CT, MR images and other information. Meanwhile, the terminal clients can download the medical 2D data and rendering them on itself including 3D image reconstruction, moreover the server can also support teleconference mode that the experts in different places discuss one patient's illness with this system like in the same location of conference. Finally, the performance issues regarding the remote 3D visualization of the medical images platform over the wireless network of the proposed system were also discussed. The result demonstrated that the proposed remote and collaborative medical image visualization computing platform could provide a perfect interactive experience in the WLAN and 4G network.

In this paper, we present an effective and accurate gaze estimation method based on two-eye model of a subject with the tolerance of free head movement from a Kinect sensor. To accurately and efficiently determine the point of gaze, i) we employ two-eye model to improve the estimation accuracy; ii) we propose an improved convolution-based means of gradients method to localize the iris center in 3D space; iii) we present a new personal calibration method that only needs one calibration point. The method approximates the visual axis as a line from the iris center to the gaze point to determine the eyeball centers and the Kappa angles. The final point of gaze can be calculated by using the calibrated personal eye parameters. We experimentally evaluate the proposed gaze estimation method on eleven subjects. Experimental results demonstrate that our gaze estimation method has an average estimation accuracy around 1.99°, which outperforms many leading methods in the state-of-the-art.

biomedical research, combining multi-modal image and geometry data, presents unique challenges for data visualization, processing, and quantitative analysis. Medical imaging provides rich information, from anatomical to deformation, but extracting this to a coherent picture across image modalities with preserved quality is not trivial. Addressing these challenges and integrating visualization with image and quantitative analysis results in Eidolon, a platform which can adapt to rapidly changing research workflows. In this paper we outline Eidolon, a software environment aimed at addressing these challenges, and discuss the novel integration of visualization and analysis components. These capabilities are demonstrated through the example of cardiac strain analysis, showing the Eidolon supports and enhances the workflow. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

A new wearable device called the 'Ubi-Sleeve' is currently being developed that enables prosthesis wearers and other stakeholders to review temperature, humidity and prosthesis slippage behavior during everyday prosthesis wear. A combination of custom 3D printed strain sensors and off the shelf temperature and humidity sensors will be integrated into an unobtrusive sleeve to create a device that enables a deeper level of understanding of heat and sweat issues. To create the device, a series of experiments are in progress that will quantify changes in heat, humidity and slippage that negatively affect the prosthesis experience. Interviews and focus groups are also being conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the human side of prosthesis wear and to also ensure that data are presented in a way that is effective, useful and easy to understand.

We have applied passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), typically used for inventory management, to implement a novel knit fabric strain gauge assembly using conductive thread. As the fabric antenna is stretched, the strength of the received signal varies, yielding potential for wearable, wireless, powerless smart-garment devices based on small and inexpensive passive RFID technology. Knit fabric sensors and other RFID biosensors can enable comfortable, continuous monitoring of biofeedback, but requires an integrated framework consisting of antenna modeling and fabrication, signal processing and machine learning on the noisy wireless signal, secure HIPAA-compliant data storage, visualization and human factors, and integration with existing medical devices and electronic health records (EHR) systems. We present a multidisciplinary, end-to-end framework to study, model, develop, and deploy RFID-based biosensors.

Attention is the primary cognitive process to induce a response to a stimulus. Maintaining the attentive state continuously for a prolonged period of time is known as sustained attention which is vital for performing any task. The present study aims at evaluating the activation of different brain regions while performing an attention requiring task. A standard attention task called the Visual Continuous Performance test was employed for the study. The analysis is achieved with the help of electroencephalography (EEG) recorded simultaneously during the entire period of execution of task. The task report detailing the errors committed, reaction time is generated automatically and indicates the level of performance. The relative theta and gamma power were significantly higher (p=0.05) during task when compared to that determined during rest, whereas in alpha band the relative power was significantly higher (p=0.05) during rest when compared to task. Event related synchronization (ERS) and Event related Desynchronization (ERD) in relative theta power and relative alpha power respectively was observed particularly in the parietal cognitive processing electrodes (associated with attention). Theta synchronisation and alpha desynchronization is associated with good performance;this was supported by the task performance result which reported a minimum of errors. These event-related changes helped sustain attention and a visualization of the activated brain regions was accomplished for a better depiction of the findings. © 2016 IEEE.
