Experimental investigation and monitoring of reward signaling implicated in addiction and neurological disorders has traditionally been limited to invasive measurement of deep-brain dopamine activity. Here we introduce a systematic methodology and algorithmic pipeline to quantify causal relationships between regions of interest (ROIs) in the cerebral cortex revealing reward-based signaling pathways involved in human decision making using only non-invasive scalp electroencephalography (EEG). The data is processed by extracting epochs around time-locked stimuli of interest and performing independent component analysis (ICA) on individual datasets to remove artifacts and identify cortical sources. The pipeline entails identifying ROI's with the Measure Projection Toolbox (MPT) through clustering of ICs, localizing current sources in these ROIs using Bayesian inference based constrained low resolution electromagnetic tomography (cLORETA), and computing causal relationships between ROI's using the Source Information Flow Toolbox (SIFT). The proposed methodology and pipeline are demonstrated on 64-channel scalp EEG signals recorded from healthy adults performing a reward-based decision making task conducted through a brain computer interface (BCI) framework. In comparison to a standard method for Group-ICA, our pipeline generates far more biologically plausible and consistent causal connections between ROIs.

We present design and implementation of CyPhyS+, a comprehensive, low-cost and standard complaint Cyber Physical System for remote health monitoring of elderly staying in old age homes. It is an end-to-end 6LoWPAN based healthcare system, which provides reliable and secured medical data acquisition, on the fly medical data analytics and visualization in real-time. It is designed for low power operations and resource constraint environment. The paper describes system architecture, design and implementation details of software and hardware sub-systems. As part of the system we developed power efficient Bluetooth-6LoWPAN mote, Health Mote. The paper describes novel energy efficient end-to-end multi-stage message reliability scheme. The experimental results prsented show the efficacy of the approach. For ensuring robust operational network, CyPhyS+ employs a low power and application aware SNMP based network monitoring for 6LoWPAN multihop network. In addition, CyPhyS+ incorporates a 128-bit AES, CBC-MAC based encryption and authentication mechanism. Other notable features of CyPhyS+ include its compliance with open FHIR/HL7 medical standards, support for Restful architecture based web services, and medical data analytics of ECG. We report on the extensive field trials that have been carried out across various parts of the city.

The rate at which biomedical literature is being published is quickly outpacing our ability to effectively leverage this information for evidence-based medicine. While papers are readily searchable through databases such as PubMed, clinicians are often left with the time-consuming task of finding, assessing, interpreting, and applying this information. Tools that structure evidence from published papers using a standardized data model and provide an intuitive query interface for exploring documented biomedical entities would be valuable in utilizing this information as part of the clinical decision making process. This talk presents efforts towards developing computational tools and a representation for modeling and relating evidence from multiple clinical trial reports for lung cancer. Challenges related to representing this information in a machine-interpretable manner, assessing study quality, and handling conflicting evidence are described. I discuss the development of two tools: 1) an annotator tool used to extract information from papers, mapping it to concepts in an ontology-based representation and 2) a visualization that summarizes information about a single paper based on information captured in the model. Using lung cancer as a driving example, I demonstrate how these tools help users apply information reported in literature towards individually tailored medicine.

AEGLE project 1 targets to build an innovative ICT solution addressing the whole data value chain for health based on: cloud computing enabling dynamic resource allocation, HPC infrastructures for computational acceleration and advanced visualization techniques. In this paper, we provide an analysis of the addressed Big Data health scenarios and we describe the key enabling technologies, as well as data privacy and regulatory issues to be integrated into AEGLE's ecosystem, enabling advanced health-care analytic services, while also promoting related research activities.

Complexity of understanding a visual scene is the single biggest challenge in creating intelligent devices for visually impaired people. The requirement of real time operation makes it inevitable to design algorithms that obey the computing and memory limits of available hardware. We present a hierarchical scene understanding system implemented on a vision system chip. It is restricted to extract specific information for predefined categories of visual scenes, but it is general enough to be able to learn quickly and autonomously. Patches having potential discriminative information are extracted using a hierarchical peeling method. Object groups are created based on proximity and size of the patches. Objects are classified using different classifiers and the votes are combined using a mixture of experts network. Experimental validation has been carried out on authentic image flows recorded by blind subjects.

As computing becomes ubiquitous in our modern society, automated recognition of human activities emerges as a crucial topic where it can be applied to many real-life human-centric scenarios such as smart automated surveillance, human computer interaction and automated refereeing. In this research study, a motion descriptor is constructed based on the extraction of optical flow features across consecutive frames for the classification of human activities. A histogram of features is derived from images taking into account the solely local properties embedded within the motion map. Feature selection which is based on the proximity of instances belonging to the same class is performed to obtain the most distinctive features. Experimental results carried out on the Weizmann dataset confirmed the potency for the proposed method with a high recognition rate of 95.02 % to distinguish between different basic human action classes such as running, walking, waving and jumping. The dataset is made of 19 basic actions for 9 different subjects. Further experiments are conducted to assess the ability of the proposed approach to recognize similar actions based on the intra and inter class distribution analysis.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and neutrophils (NP) migration are important factors of the postinfarcted hearts remodeling. These both types of the cells can migrate through cardiac extracellular matrix to the central ischemic region. The quantitative description of MSC and NP migration through collagen matrix is important aim of modern bio-medicine. NP and MSC migration through peri-infarct zone was simulated in a custom-made microphantom: two chambers (bottom 10×20 mm) connected by a collagen tunnel. Bottom of the system was constructed from glass plate, compatible with confocal microscopy. System was heated at 37°C in 5-21 % O 2 environment. The first chamber was starting point of migrating MSC and NP. The second chamber included living or apoptotic myocytes (model of central infarcted). Monitoring of migrating cells was performed on the confocal laser scanning microscope Leica. Chemotaxis movement of MSC through collagen tunnel between two chambers was approved. Speed was significantly modulated by collagen fiber orientation and hypoxic condition. The speed constants of cell motility were quantified by originally-made microphantom Matlab utility and basic equations for cell motility was proposed, usable for future creating of in-silico simulator of real cell invasivity in patients.

Confocal laser endomicroscope (CLE) is emerging as an in vivo and in situ imaging tool for early diagnosis of mucosal cancers. While an optical slice of the lesion obtained by CLE provides partial information of the microstructures, a concurrent 3D reconstruction would be much more helpful in extracting meaningful inferences. The locality of different structures and their depth relations can be made easy to analyze and comprehend. Unfortunately, currently available CLE systems lack the function of real-time image registration and 3D reconstruction, which motivates us to develop a novel solution to meet the need in the diagnosis and prognosis of oral mucosal lesions. Technical challenge for concurrent 3D visualization of the acquired stack of confocal images is the real-time image registration and reconstruction algorithms. We propose to exploit the graphics hardware to speed up these algorithms. Especially, we present our novel algorithms for the nonrigid image registration and interpolation in cellular imaging, volumetric feature detection and enhancement in rendering, as well as ubiquitous volume rendering on various clinic terminals including nowadays tablets and smart phones. Experiments on animal models and clinical trials on human volunteers are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technologies.

The analysis of cardiac dynamics based on time series extracted from cardiovascular signals (e.g. electrocardiogram, blood pressure) is relevant for differentiating between normal and pathological cases with feasible functions in the diagnosis and risk estimation. In this study, the dynamic behavior of cardiovascular time series is analyzed using reconstructed phase space to identify differences between subjects who developed syncope during head-up tilt test (fainters) and others who did not (non-fainters). Electrocardiogram and arterial blood pressure were recorded from 29 non-fainter and 28 fainter subjects. RR-interval, Amplitude of Systolic blood pressure (AmpS), peak amplitude of the first derivative of blood pressure (dPdt_max) and Pulse Transit Time (PTT) were extracted. Different features, such as the phase space density and indices derived from the recurrence quantification analysis, were computed from the phase space area of the above cited time series. In order to identify fainter and non-fainter groups, we selected the most pertinent parameters using Relief method to be used for further classification by K-nearest neighbor. The results show that the performance of the classification is approximately the same in all these time series with sensitivity (Se) near to 66.5% and specificity (Sp) around 62% during the first 5min of supine position. These values increase in the first 15min of tilted position to Se= 67% and Sp= 73%. Using an optimal fusion node, we demonstrate that the joint analysis of RR and dPdt_max provides a sensibility around 95% and a specificity of 87%. This analysis suggests that a bivavariate analysis enhances the classification performance, and help predict the outcome of the HUTT.
