The analysis of cardiac dynamics based on time series extracted from cardiovascular signals (e.g. electrocardiogram, blood pressure) is relevant for differentiating between normal and pathological cases with feasible functions in the diagnosis and risk estimation. In this study, the dynamic behavior of cardiovascular time series is analyzed using reconstructed phase space to identify differences between subjects who developed syncope during head-up tilt test (fainters) and others who did not (non-fainters). Electrocardiogram and arterial blood pressure were recorded from 29 non-fainter and 28 fainter subjects. RR-interval, Amplitude of Systolic blood pressure (AmpS), peak amplitude of the first derivative of blood pressure (dPdt_max) and Pulse Transit Time (PTT) were extracted. Different features, such as the phase space density and indices derived from the recurrence quantification analysis, were computed from the phase space area of the above cited time series. In order to identify fainter and non-fainter groups, we selected the most pertinent parameters using Relief method to be used for further classification by K-nearest neighbor. The results show that the performance of the classification is approximately the same in all these time series with sensitivity (Se) near to 66.5% and specificity (Sp) around 62% during the first 5min of supine position. These values increase in the first 15min of tilted position to Se= 67% and Sp= 73%. Using an optimal fusion node, we demonstrate that the joint analysis of RR and dPdt_max provides a sensibility around 95% and a specificity of 87%. This analysis suggests that a bivavariate analysis enhances the classification performance, and help predict the outcome of the HUTT.

Delayed gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance (DE-MR) imaging can be used for in vivo detection of left atrium (LA) fibrosis and scarring, whose identification is important for atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment. This study presents a new tool for 3D visualization of cardiac LA fibrosis based on DE-MR imaging and its qualitative validation by comparison with electro-anatomic mapping (EAM). Angio-MR (MRA) and DE-MR images were acquired and registered applying an affine transformation. Automatic LA segmentation was obtained from MRA images. Color-coded gray level intensities of DE-MR images were used as texture for the LA 3D surface model. The comparison in 4 patients between our 3D surface model and the 3D EAM confirmed the qualitative correspondence between the low-potential areas and the high-enhanced areas in DE-MR. Preliminary results on volumetric visualization of LA fibrosis based on DE-MR and MRA data processing have shown promising results and simple thresholding of our color-coded map could lead to a fast 3D quantification and localization of LA fibrosis.

Volume rendering plays a significant role in medical imaging. It allows exploring the internal structures of volumetric data acquired by the different imaging modalities. This exploration allows accurate diagnosis and consequently effective treatment. Various volume rendering techniques exists. However, compared to other techniques, Fourier volume rendering has gained a wide acceptance by the radiologists for several reasons. This technique generates attenuation renderings similar to x-ray radiographs that are well interpreted by the physicians. Additionally, it works with time complexity of O(N(2)logN), and thus, it delivers interactive frame rates for large scale medical volumes in comparison with spatial-domain rendering techniques. The complexity associated with developing a basic rendering pipeline for this technique hinders medical imaging scientists from focusing their research on investigating new algorithms for improving the reconstruction quality of the resulting digital radiographs. In this paper, we present a flexible, extensible and semi-interactive high-level MATLAB-based framework for the Fourier volume rendering pipeline.

The "wearability" of wearable technology addresses the factors that affect the degree of comfort the wearer experiences while wearing a device, including physical, psychological, and social aspects. While the physical and psychological aspects of wearing technology have been investigated since early in the development of the field of wearable computing, the social aspects of wearability have been less fully-explored. As wearable technology becomes increasingly common on the commercial market, social wearability is becoming an ever-more-important variable contributing to the success or failure of new products. Here we present an analysis of social aspects of wearability within the context of the greater understanding of wearability in wearable technology, and focus on selected theoretical frameworks for understanding how wearable products are perceived and evaluated in a social context. Qualitative results from a study of social acceptability of on-body interactions are presented as a case study of social wearability.

Embedded system has emerged as an important engineering technology in various biomedical applications. It is used as both invasive and non-invasive sensors for sensing, processing, transportation, archiving and visualization mostly using a computing device. It directly helps human kind in medical and paramedical applications that includes clinical analysis, monitoring and patient management. Non-availability of generic architecture disable the design and manufacturing of this type of autonomous embedded system and also becomes a latent and highly expensive task. Here, this paper proposes one kind of embedded system for application of an incurable genetic disease, sickle cell anemia (SCA) by integrating engineering and technologies using ARM 7 micro controller.

Grid platforms serve a wide range of activities in life sciences, bioinformatics, engineering, healthcare and other industries. This paper identifies the key bioinformatics and healthcare computing models and services on grid initiatives and classifies and describes their current use in the industry. Based on what has been reported by the literature, the paper identifies eight key areas of interests and eleven models where bioinformatics and healthcare oriented services are available. The efforts of this work will assist in determining areas of interests for end-users of grid technologies and highlighting future grid studies and research toward further grid services developments.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the main characteristics of a low cost and consumption portable device, which is part of a system for ambulatory monitoring of patients with heart diseases. The solution is based on the microcontrollers MSP430F5419A and CC2540 (Bluetooth), both from Texas Instruments and the modem SIM908 from Simcom, which includes GSM/GPRS and GPS modules. This device is an attractive solution to use in systems where low cost is a critical issue. Three prototypes of the device were developed and tested. A total of 9 standardized ECG signals with different shapes, suggested by IEC 60601-2-25: 2011 for testing purpose were applied to the system. The developed device allows acquiring and transmitting the ECG signal in a safety wcry. According to the connectivity options it could be integrated in different systems for patient monitoring.

Optical mapping allows the visualization of cardiac action potentials on cardiac tissue surfaces by fluorescence using voltage-sensitive dyes. So far, the surface measurements are directly related to surface action potentials. We aim at exploiting these measurements in order to reconstruct three-dimensional action potentials. In this preliminary work, we tried to localize fixed electrical sources in a three-dimensional slab of tissue. Therefore, we minimized the difference between the measure and a model, in a least squares sense. The model is based on the diffusion equation for the propagation of light, and simplified spherical or ellipsoidal electrical wave fronts. The inverse problem is solved by combining the gradient method and the BFGS algorithm. The method was challenged on data in silico, and then on experimental data. The results show improvements over previous localization methods on data in silico, although its use on experimental data still requires some work.

In the present paper we introduce a novel wireless system capable of simultaneously track and monitor the motion of the body and the associated muscular stress. The device provides with an array of four inertial and magnetic measurement units combined with up to 32 independent high sensitivity ADC channels. An embedded computing system does allow the high speed (4 KHz) EMG acquisition and filtering, combined with (100Hz) motion reconstruction and relevant features (20Hz) detection. The device connects to any receiving host using a portable server architecture and an extensible computing system which uses a web interface and a plugin architecture based on shared library. The device has been conceived to monitor body activities in application on-the-go, where the use of wired devices is not suitable and the need for a strict synchronizations among the motion reconstruction and the myo-electric signals is fundamental. In what follows we will describe the general architecture of the system, the embedded algorithms for motion and EMG reconstruction and the software architecture of the host system.

Stroke is a common neurological condition which is becoming increasingly common as the population ages. This entails healthcare monitoring systems suitable for home use, with remote access for medical professionals and emergency responders. The mobile phone is becoming the easy access tool for self-evaluation of health, but it is hindered by inherent problems including computational power and storage capacity. This research proposes a novel cloud based architecture of a biomedical system for a wearable motion kinematic analysis system which mitigates the above mentioned deficiencies of mobile devices. The system contains three subsystems: 1. BioKinWMS for measuring the acceleration and rotation of movement 2. BioKinMobi for Mobile phone based data gathering and visualization 3. BioKinCloud for data intensive computations and storage. The system is implemented as a web system and an android based mobile application. The web system communicates with the mobile application using an encrypted data structure containing sensor data and identifiable headings. The raw data, according to identifiable headings, is stored in the Amazon Relational Database Service which is automatically backed up daily. The system was deployed and tested in Amazon Web Services.
