The quality of marine water is an important factor of developing the tourism in coastal cities. The existing marine water quality evaluation methodologies are simple quantitative assessment or qualitative evaluation, which didn't fully reflect the substance of fuzziness and randomness. In this paper, we proposed a method that mixes the chart representation theory and the cloud model theory, by the use of visualization of chart representation theory and qualitative/quantitative information conversion of Cloud Model theory, to solve the key problem in marine water quality: how to obtain the comprehensive evaluation result. It was also applied in evaluating the marine water quality around Qinhuangdao as an example and the results show that comprehensive evaluation results are more in line with the distribution of actual data, and it is believed that this effective method will provide useful data and theoretical support in the development of tourism in coastal cities. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.

Previous application of Kohonen's self organizing map to common visualizations has yielded promising results. In this research, we extend the classic two-dimensional scatter plot visualization algorithm into the third dimension by permitting competition to occur within a three-dimensional search space. This approach takes advantage of spatial memory and increases the intrinsic dimensionality of a widely used visualization technique. We also present a method of parallelizing this novel algorithm as a method of overcoming the runtime complexity associated with it using MPI. We note that this algorithm responds extremely well to parallelization and that it leads to an effective method for knowledge discovery in complex multidimensional datasets.

An understanding of the patterns and characteristics of action potential propagation in the heart is crucial for the development of advanced methods for treating dangerous and lethal cardiac rhythm disorders. Unfortunately, visualization of these action potentials with existing methods, especially deep with the walls of the heart, has been problematic. We have been developing a new method whereby these patterns can be seen. The method calculates the locations of action potentials from the deformations they produce, as recorded in ultrasound images. An important step in developing an appropriate algorithm is to determine whether there exists a local function of the mechanical strains that marks the locations of the action potentials, or whether a fully three-dimensional inverse calculation must be performed. To study this question, we have examined the properties of deformations produced by action potentials propagating in: a 1-D fiber, an axisymmetric shell model of the heart and a 3-D model of a cube of cardiac tissue. The models and theory combine to show that incremental strain is a good marker of the action potentials wavefronts when the system and wave are essentially one-dimensional in nature. In contrast, higher dimensional structure in either the wave or the medium in which it travels produces an incremental strain field that extends out away from the wave. We conclude that determination of action potential locations will likely require a more complex calculation when wave propagation is not fundamentally one-dimensional. © 2012 CCAL.

Compartmental models in epidemiology are widely used as a means to model disease spread mechanisms and understand how one can best control the disease in case an outbreak of a widespread epidemic occurs. However, a significant challenge within the community is in the development of approaches that can be used to rigorously verify and validate these models. In this paper, we present an approach to quantify and verify the behavioral properties of compartmental epidemiological models under several common modeling scenarios including: birth/death rates and multi-host/pathogen species. We build a workflow that uses metamorphic testing, novel visualization tools and model checking to gain insights into the functionality of compartmental epidemiological models. Our initial results indicate that metamorphic testing can be used to verify the implementation of these models and provide insights into special conditions where these mathematical models may fail. The visualization front-end allows the end-user to scan through a variety of parameters commonly used in these models to elucidate the conditions under which an epidemic can occur. Furthermore, specifying these models using a process algebra allows one to automatically construct behavioral properties that can be rigorously verified using model checking. Together, our approach allows for detecting implementation errors as well as handling conditions under which compartmental epidemiological models may fail to provide insights into disease spread dynamics.

As the population lives longer, the number of people beyond the age of retirement is rising. Additional support is required to monitor the health of this aging population to ensure early detection of age related illnesses and accordingly to maintain wellbeing. Ambient sensors, such as those used in Great Northern Haven (GNH) residences, allow for continuous monitoring in an unobtrusive manner. In this paper we present visualisations of sensor data drawn from passive infra red (PIR) sensors located in three areas, i.e. the living room, hallway and main bedroom, in each of twelve independent living apartments. This representation of residents' movement can be used to infer changes in movement patterns over time.

The medial and lateral meniscus of the knee is a crescent shaped cartilage pad between the femur and the tibia bones of knee joint. The meniscus acts as a smooth surface for the joint to move on. It helps in distributing forces of weight on joint surfaces and provides stability by preventing lateral movement of the knee joint. In osteoarthritis (OA) knee joints menisci undergoes degeneration. In sports knee injuries result in menisci tears. The Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with low field strength (1.5-T) and high field strength (3.0-T) are used for diagnosis and treatment of menisci pathologies. Image processing techniques are used in visualization and detection of menisci tears. In the present work, knee MR Images in sagittal, coronal and axial views are processed for visualization of menisci and detection of menisci tears using thresholding and Canny edge detection approaches. The method segments femur, tibia, cartilage and menisci. Thickness of menisci is plotted and the processing steps are extended for detection of menisci tears.

The MSV project aims to survey current best practice in multiscale visualisation and to construct a software toolkit which will make multiscale techniques readily accessible to biomedical researchers and clinicians. In this paper, current methods for multiscale data visualisation in several domains are reviewed, and a novel classification of multiscale techniques for biomedical applications by function is proposed. The classification will form the basis of a design menu and toolkit for multiscale visualisation.

Medical image segmentation is nowadays at the core of medical image analysis and supports computer-aided diagnosis, surgical planning, intra-operative guidance or postoperative assessment. Large amounts of research efforts have been made in developing effective brain MR (magnetic resonance) image tumor segmentation methods in the past years. However algorithms proposed so far are time consuming because it involves lot of mathematical computations. Also serial segmentation of multiple MRI slices (usually required for 3D visualization) takes exponential time. This results in need for improvement in performance as far as the time complexity is concerned. This paper proposes a methodology that incorporates the K-means clustering and morphological operation for parallel segmentation of multiple MRI slices corresponding to single patient. Segmentation of multiple MRI slices for tumor extraction plays major role in 3D (Three Dimensional) visualization and serves as an input for the same. The proposed framework follows SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) model and since the segmentation of individual slice is independent of each other and can be performed in parallel and multithreading definitely speeds up the entire process. Also the framework does not involve any kind of inter-process communication thus the time is saved here as well.

Accessing volumetric medical data requires advanced visualization techniques. One approach is to show slices in situ, by projecting images into space at the proper position. We propose using floating images, that is, undistorted real images of displays, appearing at the desired position and orientation. Such floating images are made possible by the new optical device eDCRA' invented at NICT in Japan. To enhance the freedom of the user, we have developed a robot-assisted interactive visualization system, where the user can ehold' the image slice in her/his hand, and freely change its position and orientation, thus inspect any part of the volumetric data set as desired. The hand position is detected by a stereo camera and image processing. We describe the structure and operation of our system, and show samples of its usage.

As the growing of computing capability, handy mobile devices are used to explore and deal with medical images. More and more attention was paid on remote accessing to picture archiving and communication system (PACS). In this paper, the iPACS, a web-based application running on iPad, is provided to explore medical information on PACS server over a wireless local area network (WLAN), as well as to apply a series of interactive operations adapting with the multi-touch features of iPad, including 2D image processing, 3D visualization and patient information query. So the medical staff could explore medical images in the remote PACS sever smoothly with iPACS. Finally, the performance of iPACS is tested to demonstrate that the inter-device delay is small enough to provide a smooth operation.
