Scientists increasingly use ensemble data sets to explore relationships present in dynamic systems. Ensemble data sets combine spatio-temporal simulation results generated using multiple numerical models, sampled input conditions and perturbed parameters. While ensemble data sets are a powerful tool for mitigating uncertainty, they pose significant visualization and analysis challenges due to their complexity. In this article, we present Ensemble-Vis, a framework consisting of a collection of overview and statistical displays linked through a high level of interactivity. Ensemble-Vis allows scientists to gain key scientific insight into the distribution of simulation results as well as the uncertainty associated with the scientific data. In contrast to methods that present large amounts of diverse information in a single display, we argue that combining multiple linked displays yields a clearer presentation of the data and facilitates a greater level of visual data analysis. We demonstrate our framework using driving problems from climate modeling and meteorology and discuss generalizations to other fields.

Many areas of science are seeing a data deluge coming from new instruments, myriads of sensors and exponential growth in electronic records. We take two examples - one the analysis of gene sequence data (35339 Alu sequences) and other a study of medical information (over 100,000 patient records) in Indianapolis and their relationship to Geographic and Information System and Census data available for 635 Census Blocks in Indianapolis. We look at initial processing (such as Smith Waterman dissimilarities), clustering (using robust deterministic annealing) and Multi Dimensional Scaling to map high dimension data to 3D for convenient visualization. We show how scaling pipelines can be produced that can be implemented using either cloud technologies or MPI which are compared. This study illustrates challenges in integrating data exploration tools with a variety of different architectural requirements and natural programming models. We present preliminary results for end to end study of two complete applications.

The widespread availability of Web 2.0 to share contents using simple protocols like RSS presents opportunities for delivering spatial data over the Internet as well as small mobile devices. In this paper, an architectural solution has been developed where RSS can be enhanced to play the role of Trusted Third Party supplying syndication and aggregation service that allow a safe authentication, sharing and visualization of SVG images. The enhanced architecture uses the JAAS API along with our developed Role-Based authentication method.

Volume rendering techniques have been used widely for high quality visualization of 3D data sets, especially in the fields of biomedical image processing. However, when rendering very large (out-of-core) volume data sets, the conventional in-core volume rendering algorithms cannot run efficiently due to the impossibility of fitting the entire input data in the internal memory of a computer. In order to solve this problem, an efficient out-of-core volume rendering method based on volume ray casting and GPU acceleration, with a new out-of-core framework for visualizing large volume data sets, are proposed in this paper. The new framework gives a transparent and efficient access to the volume data set cached in the hard disk, while the new volume rendering method minimize the times of reloading volume data from the hard disk to the internal memory and perform comparatively fast high-quality volume rendering. The experimental results indicate that the new method and framework are effective and efficient for the visualization of out-of-core medical data sets.

Three space dimension model representation plays a key role in medical image processing, surgical plan decision, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and other medical activities. A three space dimension face model of biomedical visualization is proposed in the paper through two parameter image representation, which are based on these three facts: 1. three space dimension simple surface could be represented by two free parameters; 2. any three space dimension simple surface could be two smooth manifold in three space dimension embed problem; 3. simple surface visualization is one important aspects of biomedical visualization. Without extraction of the volume data from these images from computer computed tomography (CT), the method is accomplished through extraction of contours from these images and map these points into their two parameter space while their geometric properties are easy to be calculated and scale properties relationships between their three dimension space are also to be determined. Given the extraction algorithms of contours from these images and the map which the method used, geometric and scale relationship are listed in the paper as well as the implements of the method through numerical tests.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) is a new approach for medical diagnosis. Where traditional methods deliver a unique 3D volumetric dataset, spectral CT supplies multiple 3D volumetric datasets (energy bins). The novelty of this technique creates new opportunities and new challenges regarding visualization of the acquired data. In this paper we describe our approach and effort for providing high quality visualization of this new type of dataset. After a visual characterization of the data, we describe a set of image filtering algorithms we implemented and the results we obtained.

In this paper, we present a study on the relationships between Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) related clinical attributes using network visualization and analysis techniques. This work is the first step of our long-term project to identify novel biomarkers for CLL, working in coordination with the NCI-funded CLL Research Consortium (***). By computing Spearman correlation coefficients for 125 clinical attributes, we established an attribute network for CLL. Using network visualization techniques we identified a core network with peripheral nodes around it. An important observation is that many cytogenetic attributes are in the core network, indicating the connection between karyotypes (e.g., abnormality in Chromosome 17) and other clinical attributes. Since these karyotypes are linked to CLL etiology in many ways, the corresponding clinical attributes may be further selected and tested as markers for disease screening. The correlation analysis results are also consistent with previous studies using a knowledge engineering based approach for establishing relationships between such attributes.

Radiotherapy is a very important tumor treatment. And cobalt-60 radiotherapy machine (also known as gamma knife) is a common external beam radiotherapy equipment and is designed mainly for conventional radiotherapy. We develop a software system, which is named radiotherapy treatment planning system, to make gamma knife more precise in radiotherapy. Section II introduces the principle of gamma knife the system works with. Section III expounds the main components of system. It is composed of image pre-processing, dose computation, dose distribution display, three-dimensional reconstruction, and other modules. Section III.B introduces TMR-OAR model the system uses to compute dose distribution. And Section III.D introduces the way of human body data and dose data visualization. Finally, Section III.E shows the evaluation consequence of a treatment plan. The system works well, and achieves the expected results.

The introduction of adaptive image-guided radiotherapy (ART) has contributed to the rapid accumulation of spatiotemporal medical image data, often making it difficult to consolidate information on a single patient. For oncology patients, the lack of data integration can negatively impact on patient care. We developed a volume visualization system with augmented reality interaction to display radiotherapy plan contents including computed tomography (CT) images, dose distribution, and mesh models of radiotherapy targets. This system also provided quantitative indices about the radiotherapy dose coverage based on composite measurement of surface distance and volume difference between target volume and the volume of multiple isodose levels. The dose coverage data of a radiotherapy plan could be incorporated as feedback for deriving "accept or reject" decisions to improve the quality of radiotherapy on an individual patient basis using the surface distance comparison methods for different volumes.
