Experiments have been performed with software to allow color-impaired users to tune and save their own enhancement scales for image interpretation. An interactive technique that enabled image users to define and save their own scales was developed. Color-impaired subjects were recruited and asked to develop scales to assist them in feature recognition on a set of three images, including both infrared and visual data. Example images that are enhanced by using scales tuned to several different types of color impairment are presented.< >

The speed of skeletonizing algorithms is improved by applying them on contour pixels only. Further improvement can be gained by using chain-coded contours. If the deletion of a contour pixel is allowed, according to a simple connectivity test, the corresponding pair of chain codes is replaced by a predefined test of other chain codes. The resulting skeleton does not require cleaning or pruning, but the number of branches can be easily controlled by modifying the replacement table. Since the algorithm is sequential, the starting pixel on the contour requires special attention to avoid spurious branches.< >

A bioengineering method for correlating eye movement (EM) scanpaths obtained under different experimental conditions is introduced. Using an EM tracking system, together with string-editing and Markov matrices, it is shown that EMs obtained during internal visualization of a given stimulus do reflect the content of the visualized image. In contrast to previous studies, quantitative parameters are studied in order to obtain further insight into the mechanisms of visual imagery and how this function differs from visual perception.< >

A computerized system is described for 3-D reconstruction, manipulation, geometrical analysis, and postprocessing of biomedical models. This system, based on an IRIS 3020 graphics workstation from Silicon Graphics, can perform (1) preprocessing of 3-D biomedical data coming from serial slices, (2) 3-D generation and coding of the underlying structures, and (3) display, interactive object manipulation, and geometrical analysis. The main features of the modeler are the availability of modular built-in functions and the flexibility of adding dedicated or general-purpose functions. Such functions can range from specific image preprocessing algorithms (soft tissue segmentation, edge and contrast enhancement, contour detection) to postprocessing functions that allow visualization of modeling analysis results.< >

In an earlier work, we have developed a new principle of optical microscopic tomography, by which an inside optical density distribution of a 3-D biological sample can be visualized without physically slicing. However, since the system is angularly band-limited, the spatial resolution (especially, the longitudinal one) is poor. In this paper, we describe a numerical method to improve the resolution of the reconstructed 3-D image by constraining the reconstructed density to be nonnegative. The method requires much smaller computation complexity than the conventional quadratic programming when the number of variates (pixels or voxels) are large (in the case of 3-D imaging, for example, 100×100×100). Experimental results by the proposed method with real data of a biological sample are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

visualization of ultrasonic wavefronts formed by a transducer is important in nondestructive evaluation and medical imaging. Optical diffraction by acoustical field is utilized as a method for visualization, but it has a disadvantage that the detected value is the integration of acoustical field along the optical pass. It has been reported that a cross-sectional mapping of a ultrasonic field is possible through Raman-Nath diffraction if the techniques of tomographic reconstruction is used to overcome this disadvantage. We report a tomographic reconstruction of the ultrasonic field on the transducer from the amplitude of a projection at one view angle. The field on the transducer can be reconstructed more easily than the field whose projection is detected. Many projections detected at various distances from the transducer can be used.
