Many applications in research, in manufacturing and in every day life require measurement of velocity. Generally the velocity is estimated from a sequence of images. There are many methods reported in the literature using heuristics and transform techniques. In general these methods are tailored to specific applications. We propose a wavelet transform based technique to estimate velocity. We assume that the scene can be piecewise modeled by a multi variable polynomial. We have derived wavelet functions that can be used to estimate velocity from components of the wavelet transform. The technique has been demonstrated for 1D analytical functions and the error is less than 0.5% for polynomials of finite degree, and less than 5% for sinusoids. For 2D sequence of images, the image space is represented by a spatio-temporal cube, and partitioned into subcubes of different dimensions. wavelet transform techniques can then be applied to these variable size segments at multiple resolution. To estimate the two velocity components Vx and Vy in this spatio-temporal cube requires the solution of a system of 8 non linear equations. We are in the process of solving these non linear equations.

The objective measurement of blockiness plays an important role in many applications, such as the quality assessment of an image, and the design of image and video coding system. However, most of the existing no-reference blockiness metrics do not consider important influences of grid distortion of an image on the performance of the metric. In this paper, we propose a new blockiness metric, which is robust to grid distortion, based on the marginal distribution of local wavelet coefficients and saliency information. Experiments for several public image databases showed that the proposed metric provides consistent correlations with subjective blockiness scores and outperforms other existing no-reference blockiness metrics.

This wavelet based data compression algorithm addresses a growing need to handle large quantities of image data quickly and efficiently. This wavelet technique has been coded based on the assumption that small coefficients computed by the two-dimensional orthogonal wavelet transform are principally associated with image noise, and only the largest values are required to capture the information content of the respective source image. The approach has been successfully applied to one-dimensional signals in the design of signal classifiers. This particular algorithm for wavelet-based image compression has been designed and compared to the Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) still picture image compression standard. Examples are shown of side scan sonar images, x rays, and laser line scan images.

Texture analysis and classification is an important issue. Comparison of texture analysis and classification was characterized by the lack of adequate methods. wavelet decomposition method is superior to other conventional methods. In this study, Discrete wavelet Transform (DWT) Adaptive Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were used for acqusition and recognition invariant properties of tissue-type image. 22 texture images were taken from Brodatz database for the analysis of tissue-type image. 50 randomly 64 x 64 regions are selected from each of 22 images. Testing Succes with the average rate of 91.27% was obtained by using DWT-ANFIS method.

This paper proposes a new method of designing finite-support wavelet filters, based on minimization of energy in key parts of the frequency domain. In particular this technique is shown to be very effective for designing families of filters that are suitable for use in the shift-invariant DualTree Complex wavelet structure that has been developed by the author recently, and has been shown to be important for a range of imageprocessingapplications. The Dual-Tree structure requires most of the wavelet filters to have a well-controlled group delay, equivalent to one quarter of a sample period, in order to achieve optimal shift invariance. The proposed new design technique allows this requirement to be included along with the usual smoothness and perfect reconstruction properties to yield wavelet filters with a unique combination of features: linear phase, tight frame, compact spatial support, good frequency domain selectivity with low sidelobe levels, approximate shift invariance, and good directional selectivity in two or more dimensions.

However, the pyramid algorithm remains silicon area costly, essentially because of its memory needs, and depending on the size of filters used. This paper proposes a new implementation of the wavelet transform using the lifting scheme. Using an improved method of managing the data flow and the RAM, this method proposes many improvements such as in-place calculation, small memory needs, and easy inverse transform.
