In this paper, the performance of filters implied in the discrete wavelet transform approach is compared with a set of filters of common application in imageprocessing. A multidimensional multirate codec is designed in which the best subband decomposition and coding is jointly obtained by minimization of a rate-distortion criterion. We also introduce the idea of directional sensitivity based on the initial sampling lattice. This allows the codec to adapt better to the spectral content of the signal. Finally, taking as a starting point the continuous wavelet transform, we propose a discrete multiresolution analysis that would lead to new discrete transforms of special interest when analyzing discrete scalings and shiftings: the completely discrete wavelet transform.

In this paper, a robust image hashing framework is proposed using image normalization, discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition. The stressed motive of the proposed scheme is to obtain a randomize hash sequence which can be used for image authentication and database search. For this purpose, the image is first normalized followed by hash generation in the wavelet domain utilizing the properties of singular value decomposition (SVD). Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed scheme is providing the better robustness and security.

This paper presents two multiresolution algorithms for detection and separation of mixed signals using the wavelet transform. The first algorithm allows one to design a mother wavelet and its associated wavelet grid that guarantees the separation of signal components if information about the expected minimum signal time and frequency separation of the individual components is known. The second algorithm expands this idea to design two mother wavelets which are then combined to achieve the required separation otherwise impossible with a single wavelet. Potential applications include many biological signals such as ECG, EKG, and retinal signals.

wavelet transforms have proven to be useful tools for several applications, including signal analysis, signal compression and numerical analysis. This paper surveys the VLSI architectures that have been proposed for computing the Discrete and Continuous wavelet Transforms for I-D and 2-D signals. The architectures are based upon on-line versions of the wavelet transform algorithms. These architectures support single chip implementations and are optimal with respect to both area and time under the word-serial model.

We have successfully compressed audio signals using wavelet packets based on a recently developed fast wavelet transform (FWT) scheme using circular convolution with an adaptive hybrid filter/basis system. This algorithm gives perfect reconstruction of the data; edge effects are removed entirely. As a result, the quality of audio signal compression is much improved. To illustrate this, we present results from our comparison study where we compressed a test signal using these `circular wavelet packets' and wavelet packets based on the standard FWT.

The framework for image coding system based on embedded zerotrees consists three stages: (i) wavelet transform (ii) an embedded zerotree encoding and (iii) adaptive arithmetic encoding. In this framework, the selection of wavelet filter becomes an important issue. In this paper, we present a modification to the scanning approach in the set partitioning algorithm proposed in [3] to exploit the correlation in a local neighborhood. Two new criteria are proposed for evaluating the performance of wavelets in lossless image compression applications: zero tree count and monotone spectral ordering of subbands produced after wavelet transform in a multiresolution scheme. We evaluate several wavelet filters to test the evaluation criteria and present experimental results to justify the proposed performance criteria.

The primary goal of this paper is to give examples of the recently developed (finite-field) wavelet coding method by studying the encoder and decoder for some half-rate codes. We propose a decoding methodology based on estimating the polyphase components of the channel error pattern. To demonstrate the striking computational savings of the wavelet coding method over alternatives, we show that bounded-distance decoding of the (24,12,8) Golay code requires only weight computations (or at the worst case, it needs a cyclic lookup table of table size 12). The simplicity and computational savings that finite field wavelets offer for the encoding and decoding of wavelet block codes indicate their powerful capacities for error control coding applications.

alpha stable distribution and its fractional lower order statistics (FLOS) are introduced in this paper. Meanwhile the non-Gauss characteristics of some signals are considered in the practical applications. The method based on FLOS is the important method of signal analysis and processing under the signal and/or noise condition of non-Gauss alpha stable distribution. The medicine images are taken as the example. The FLOS in company with wavelet transform is introduced, and two parameters of wavelet coefficients for the images: alpha and gamma are estimated. It is explained that when in the practical imageprocessing, we must consider the non-Gauss characteristics of signal to avoid performance degeneration with conventional signalprocessing methods. The proposed algorithm builds the foundation for the following imageprocessing such as using Bayes wavelet to remove the noise and so on.

Unlike the classical wavelet decomposition scheme it is possible to have different scaling and wavelet functions at every scale by using non-stationary multiresolution analyses. For the bidimensional case inhomogeneous multiresolution analyses using different scaling and wavelet functions for the two variables are introduced. Beyond it, these two methods are combined. All this freedom is used for compact image coding. The idea is to build out of the functions in a library that special non-stationary and/or inhomogeneous multiresolution analysis, that is best suited for a given image in the context of compact coding (in the sense of optimizing certain cost-functions).
