Digital film processing is characterized by a resolution of at least 2 K (2048times1536 pixels per frame at 30 bit/pixel and 24 pictures/s, data rate of 2.2 Gbit/s); higher resolutions of 4 K (8.8 Gbit/s) and even 8 K (35.2 Gbit/s) are on their way. Real-time processing at this data rate is beyond the scope of today's standard and DSP processors, and ASICs are not economically viable due to the small market volume. As an answer to these challenges, an FPGA-based approach was followed in the FlexFilm project. The multi-board, multi-FPGA hardware/software architecture is based on Xilinx Virtex-ii Pro FPGAs which contain the reconfigurable image stream processing data path, large external SDRAM memories for multiple frame storage, and a PCI Express communication backbone network. Different applications are supported on a single hardware platform by using different FPGA configurations. This paper will focus on the FlexWAFE framework, a component library consisting of parameterizable modules for real-time stream processing including memory and communication controllers. Some of the library blocks' parameters are set at synthesis time via VHDL generics, while others are run-time configurable. This combination allows some flexibility without sacrificing FPGA area or speed.

The significant benefits of pre-emptive arc-flash protection and online condition monitoring of electrical equipment are quite well known. Our continuing research focuses on the development of new advanced sensor technologies which are cost effective, reliable and efficient for early detection of faults in order to predict impending arc-flash occurrences in medium voltage and low voltage switchgear and controlgear. More extensive and detailed measurements, regarding significant defects leading to an arc flash event, have been completed since the original work in Part I was completed. A more detailed analysis of the results of this additional testing is presented in this paper. It has been documented that the two major non-contact causes leading to an arc-flash event in switchgear are insulation degradation and thermal stresses. This paper covers the detailed measurement results under both of these conditions. New sensor technologies both for partial discharge (PD) measurement and thermal detection are introduced and evaluated. An effective signal processing technique, needed for extracting the essential indication of a developing fault, is also presented. Finally this paper outlines how a pre-emptive arc detection system can be connected to protection, PLC or SCADA systems.

This paper presents a novel parameterized variety based architecture for interactive 3DTV and Free viewpoint TV (FTV) applications. The proposed signal representation scheme allows to render free viewpoint images, taking only few sample images of the scene acquired by arbitrary, uncalibrated cameras. We extend the Parameterized image Variety approach for rendering proposed earlier by Genc and Ponce [1] to handle full perspective cameras. A fast and efficient algebraic framework is proposed for the parameterized representation of 3D scene, in terms of image pixel positions corresponding to only three reference scene points. The key aspects of the novel FTV architecture based on this variety model are i) interactive stereoscopic view synthesis from arbitrary viewpoint ii) intuitive interface for content based virtual view specification iii) facilitation to add special effects like 3D scene augmentation.

In this brief, the implementation of efficient image encryption and decryption scheme in Residue Number System (RNS) is analyzed. The RNS domain is mainly chosen for its carry free parallel and fast arithmetic operations. But, the converters make RNS inefficient by having large delays. Hence, to use the RNS for our applications we must have the efficient converters. Here, we designed pure combinational logic based forward and reverse converters without using any preloaded ROM's. We used most efficient moduli set {2 n ,2 2n+1 -1,2 n +1,2 n -1} for realizing these converters. New Chinese Reminder theorem-ii is used for the implementation of reverse converter. The image is encrypted by doing modular conversion using forward converted and the original image is decrypted using reverse converter.

This paper presents an novel bitwise minimum error replacement (MER) technique for data hiding. Such a bitwise MER can embed k-bit (k ≥ 1) secret data into cover data only introduce minimum embedding error smaller than (2 k-1 - 1)2 i-k according to the embedding location i. To achieve the goal of MER, we develop novel multi-bit bitwise 3-step MER algorithms to adaptively evaluate the most similar value to replace the original one, which consist of three steps: (1) embed logo data into cover data, (2) adjust the least-significant bits (LSBs) of cover data, and (3) adjust the maximum-significant bits (MSBs) of cover data. Reason that we called these multi-bit MER algorithms are "bitwise" is that data replacements are based on the logic and algebraic bit operations to achieve minimum error. Many simulations show that the proposed MER performs good embedding quality for watermarking and steganography applications.

Biometrics is an effective technology for personnel identity recognition, but uni-modal biometric systems which use a single trait for recognition will suffer from problems like noisy sensor data, non-universality, lack of distinctiveness of the biometric trait, and spoof attacks. These problems can be tackled by using multi-biometrics in the system. Hand-based person recognition provides a reliable, low-cost and user-friendly viable solution for a range of access control applications. As one of the most popular biometric traits, fingerprints (FP) are widely used in personal recognition. However, a novel hand-based biometric feature, Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP), has attracted an increasing amount of attention. In this paper, FP and FKP are integrated in order to construct an efficient multi-biometric recognition system based on matching score level and image level fusion. In this study we use the minimum average correlation energy (MACE) and Unconstrained MACE (UMACE) filters in conjunction with two correlation plane performance measures, max peak value and peak-to-sidelobe ratio, to determine the effectiveness of this method. The experimental results showed that the designed system achieves an excellent recognition rate on the Hong Kong polytechnic university (PolyU) FKP and high resolution fingerprint database.

The analysis of 3-D shape meshes is a fundamental problem in computer vision, graphics, and medical imaging. Frequently, the needs of the application require that our analysis take a multi-resolution view of the shape's local and global topology, and that the solution is consistent across multiple scales. Unfortunately, the preferred mathematical construct which offers this behavior in classical image/signal processing, wavelets, is no longer applicable in this general setting (data with non-uniform topology). In particular, the traditional definition does not allow writing out an expansion for graphs that do not correspond to the uniformly sampled lattice (e.g., images). In this paper, we adapt recent results in harmonic analysis, to derive Non-Euclidean wavelets based algorithms for a range of shape analysis problems in vision and medical imaging. We show how descriptors derived from the dual domain representation offer native multi-resolution behavior for characterizing local/global topology around vertices. With only minor modifications, the framework yields a method for extracting interest/key points from shapes, a surprisingly simple algorithm for 3-D shape segmentation (competitive with state of the art), and a method for surface alignment (without landmarks), We give an extensive set of comparison results on a large shape segmentation benchmark and derive a uniqueness theorem for the surface alignment problem.

Recent advances in control algorithms embedded into a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) allowed the application of such algorithms in real engineering problems (robotic, image and signal processing, control, power electronics, etc.), however, the application of such technologies in the solar energy field is very limited. The embedded advanced algorithm into FPGA can play a very important role in renewable energy systems for control, monitoring, supervision, etc. FPGA technology was employed due to its development, flexibility and low cost. In this paper, the incremental conductance (IncCond) algorithm is implemented on FPGA for tracking the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of a photovoltaic (PV) array. The IncCond algorithm has been designed using a description language (VHSIC standing for very-high-speed integrated circuits) then implemented on Xilinx Virtex-ii-Pro(xc2v1000-4fg456. Modelsim-based simulation results confirm the good tracking efficiency (96%) and rapid response time (2ms). It has been confirmed that the implemented algorithm performs better than the well known Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm.

In this paper, we present a novel low-power floating-point multiplier design that leverages dynamic segmentation to enhance efficiency. Our approach approximates the mantissa product through a simple addition of dynamically extracted input segments, supplemented by an additional correction term implemented through a small, hardwired lookup table. Compared to previous proposals, our FPM shows optimal results in terms of the power-accuracy trade-off, with power savings exceeding 85% compared to an exact implementation. The proposed multiplier offers remarkable performance in image processing applications, with Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) values approaching 1 and Peak signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) reaching up to 66dB.

We propose an improved saliency guided wavelet compression scheme for low-bitrate image/video coding applications. Important regions (faces in security camera feeds, vehicles in traffic surveillance) get degraded significantly at low bitrates by existing compression standards, such as JPEG/JPEG-2000/MPEG-4, since these do not explicitly utilize any knowledge of which regions are salient. We design a compression algorithm which, given an image/video and a saliency value for each pixel, computes a corresponding saliency value in the wavelet transform domain. Our algorithm ensures wavelet coefficients representing salient regions have a high saliency value. The coefficients are transmitted in decreasing order of their saliency. This allows important regions in the image/video to have high fidelity even at very low bitrates. Further, our compression scheme can handle several salient regions with different relative importance. We compare the performance of our method with the JPEG/JPEG-2000 image standards and the MPEG-4 video standard through two experiments: face detection and vehicle tracking. We show improved detection rates and quality of reconstructed images/videos using our Saliency Based Compression (SBC) algorithm.
