With the use of advanced computer graphics rendering software, very successful photorealistic images can be generated. Therefore, it may be hard to discriminate the photographic images from the photorealistic ones. In this work, we propose to use the statistics obtained from the ridgelet transform to distinguish the photographic and photorealistic images. Experimental results show that the features obtained by using the ridgelet transform is relatively less complex and more successful for the classification from the ones obtained by using wavelet transform.

To reduce the storage and transmission requirements in image applications, images are compressed while maintaining acceptable visual quality. In this paper, image retrieval using Vector Quantization (VQ) is explored. The VQ technique is tested on uncompressed images (UCID) as well as compressed images (JPG). In order to reduce the retrieval time, the images are converted into thumbnails and the retrieval performance in both the domains is observed. The testing is performed with various thumbnail sizes. Performance is evaluated by using Precision and Recall. It is observed that the retrieval performance using VQ for compressed images remains comparable with that with uncompressed images.

This paper proposes a data pruning-based compression scheme to improve the rate-distortion relation of compressed images and video sequences. The original frames are pruned to a smaller size before compression. After decoding, they are interpolated to their original size by an edge-directed interpolation. The data pruning is optimized to obtain the minimal distortion in the interpolation phase. Furthermore, a novel high order interpolation is proposed to adapt the interpolation to many edge directions. This high order filtering uses extra surrounding pixels and achieves more robust edge-directed image interpolation. Simulation results are shown for both image interpolation and coding applications.

In this paper, we discuss the design and real-time implementation of a multi-level two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT). The wavelet transform uses the well-known 5/3 filter coefficients and is implemented using the lifting framework. However, the transform allows complexity-scalable solutions with different latencies for scalable video coding. We have extensively utilized SIMD (single instruction multiple data) and DMA (direct memory access) techniques, where the proposed process of background DMA transfers is so effective, that the ALUs are almost never starved for data input. The obtained execution performs a 4-level transform at CCIR-601 broadcast resolution in 3.65 Mcycles, including memory stalls, on a DM642 DSP. At a clock rate of 600 MHz this translates to more than 160 transforms per second, satisfying the performance requirements for a real-time image/video encoding system for e.g. surveillance applications.

This paper provides subjective and objective a comparison of a multi-frame superresolution algorithm with four different single-frame algorithms. The multi-frame super-resolution reconstruction is based on an adaptive filtering approach, using least mean squares (LMS). The single-frame methods are, respectively, bicubic interpolation, wavelet-based interpolation, edge-adaptive interpolation and interpolation using wide sense Markov random fields. The performance is measured objectively with. PSNR and SSIM criteria, while the subjective evaluation is based on forced choice scoring. Wilcoxon rho test is employed to check fort e degree of agreement between subjective and objective results.

This paper presents a new approach for segmenting a video sequence containing dynamic textures. The proposed method is based on a 2D+T curvelet transform and an octree hierarchical representation. The curvelet transform enables to outline spatio-temporal structures of a given scale and orientation. The octree structure based on motion coherence enables a better spatio-temporal segmentation than a direct application of the 2D+T curvelet transform. Our segmentation method is successfully applied on video sequences of dynamic textures. Future prospects are finally exposed.

This work is involved the threshold-free detection of QRS complexes in an abdominal electrocardiogram (AECG) waveform. The precision in the identification of QRS complexes is of great importance for on-line maternal heart rate calculation and, will lead to on line fetal heart detection. During the last century much work has been carried out in this field, using various methods ranging from filtering and threshold methods, through wavelet methods, to neural networks, and others, each of which has different effectiveness and weaknesses. Although their performance is generally good, but, the main weakness is that, they are threshold dependent. In the proposed algorithm a RR moving interval is calculated, based on normal maximum and minimum heart rate (HR). This has the advantage of ensuring that every R-peak is contained between the edges of the moving interval. Thus the effectiveness of this algorithm is that, it is threshold independent, and after every peak detection the RR moving interval is updated to calculate the next peak contained between its edges. The complete algorithm is implemented using MATLAB 7.4. The method is validated using 20 recorded data. The average sensitivity and average positive predictivity of the detection method are 99.05% and 99.8% respectively.

A denoising procedure based on a thresholding function has been integrated into the JPEG2000 part II standard which is designed to support a wide variety of applications, including the compression and transmission of medical images. This standard is based on the discrete wavelet transform using the Daubechies(9,7) biorthogonal wavelet, also named the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau 9/7 wavelet. However, is this the best choice concerning quality at any time? In this work we compared the results from 36 different variations of wavelets compression schemes to explore their difference related to image content and quality. Two groups of well known images of different levels of complexities and content are used to evaluate the relation among fidelity, image content and noise level. The first group is formed by natural images and the second group is formed by synthetic images. They are considered on two different resolutions (128 × 128 and 256 × 256) and with high level of Additive White Gaussian Noise. The performance of each approach is evaluated by means of fidelity, comparing the originals without noise versus the same images after compression/denoising and decompression. The goal is to define which combination present the best and the worst results considering the final visual quality.

In this work, we quantify the relationship between synthetic-aperture length (or equivalently, along-track resolution) and seabed segmentation performance experimentally for real synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery. The seabed segmentation algorithm employed uses wavelet-based features, spectral clustering, and a variational Bayesian Gaussian mixture model. It is observed that for this approach, the correct seabed segmentation rate drops approximately ten percentage points for each halving of the along-track resolution between 3 cm and 96 cm. Moreover, changing the along-track resolution has the most significant effect on rocky seabeds.

Low-complexity video encoding has been applicable to several emerging applications. Recently, distributed video coding (DVC) has been proposed to reduce encoding complexity to the order of that for still image encoding. In addition, compressive sensing (CS) has been applicable to directly capture compressed image data efficiently. In this paper, by integrating the respective characteristics of DVC and CS, a distributed compressive video sensing (DCVS) framework is proposed to simultaneously capture and compress video data, where almost all computation burdens can be shifted to the decoder, resulting in a very low-complexity encoder. At the decoder, compressed video can be efficiently reconstructed using the modified GPSR (gradient projection for sparse reconstruction) algorithm. With the assistance of the proposed initialization and stopping criteria for GRSR, derived from statistical dependencies among successive video frames, our modified GPSR algorithm can terminate faster and reconstruct better video quality. The performance of our DCVS method is demonstrated via simulations to outperform three known CS reconstruction algorithms.
