Abundances of material components in objects are usually computed using techniques such as linear spectral unmixing on individual pixels captured on hyperspectral imaging devices. The effectiveness of these algorithms usually depends on how distinct the spectral signatures in the libraries used in them are. This can be measured by SVD or Least Squares based figures of merit such as the condition number of the matrix consisting of the library signatures. However, it must be noted that each library signature usually is the mean of a number of signatures representing that material, or class of objects. This aspect of bow individual library spectral signatures vary in real-world situations needs to be addressed in order to more accurately assess linear unmixing techniques. These same considerations also goes for signature libraries transformed into new ones by wavelet or other transforms. Figures of merit incorporating variations within each library signature (which more accurately reflects real measurements) will be implemented and compared with other figures of merit not taking these variations into account.

In this work, we present the applications of three-dimensional set partitioning methods to the sequence of still color images. The set partitioning methods we use in this paper are SPIHT, a state-of-the-art encoder and SPECK, a more recently developed, low complexity encoder. The three-dimensional versions of these methods are based on the observation that the sequences of images are contiguous in the temporal axis and there is no motion between slices. Therefore, the 3D discrete wavelet transform can fully exploit the inter-slices correlations. The set partitioning techniques involve a progressive "bitplane" coding of the wavelet coefficients, where the SPECK uses a cube-splitting quantization structure and the SPIHT uses a zerotree-like quantization structure. We extend the 3D-SPECK and 3D-SPIHT to code the color image sequences and call these schemes 3D-CSPECK and 3D-CSPIHT. Rate-distortion (Peak signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) vs. bit rate) performances were presented by comparing 3D-CSPECK and 3D-CSPIHT on one sequence of Visible Human datasets. Results show that 3D-CSPECK is comparable to 3D-CSPIHT, which matches the published results of gray scale image sequence compression.

A novel method for the automatic generation of a facial texture is proposed in this paper. Multiple pictures from the individual are combined to create the texture using a wavelet-based technique. The different tasks involved in the proposed method include: scaling, histogram equalization, deformation and merging. A set of particular feature points of the MPEG-4 standard for multimedia applications is used in the above mentioned tasks. In the merging stage, wavelet multiresolution decomposition of the images and filtering of the wavelet coefficients are performed to obtain a seamless texture. Finally, the resulting texture is mapped onto a 3D head model which has been adapted to the particular individual based on the same pictures. Since the proposed method relies on the MPEG-4 facial and body animation (FBA) standard, it can be easily integrated with applications using the same standard.

In recent years, wavelet-based video coding schemes have attracted considerable attention in the image coding community. In this paper, a new algorithm of three-dimensional wavelet transform (3D-WT) for video coding is presented. The main difference between it and the traditional 3D-WT algorithm is temporal decomposition. The proposed algorithm performs the temporal decomposition of a video sequence in a more efficient way, which is on the basis of several groups separated from the original video sequence. The requirements of processing memory for the proposed algorithm is also analyzed and compared with that of the traditional algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits lower memory demands and better performance of video coding than the traditional 3D-WT algorithm

The dual-tree complex wavelet (DT CWT) was introduced to overcome the disadvantages of the traditional fully decimated discrete wavelet transform (DWT), namely the shift-variance and the poor directional selectivity. Because of its desirable properties, the dual-tree has been successful in many image processing applications. However, its use in data compression has been hindered because of its redundancy. Our goal is to be able to predict the wavelet coefficients of one tree knowing those of the other tree. The proposed method is based on exploiting the orthogonality properties of one of the nicest dual-tree designs, the Q-shift complex wavelets.

We address a scenario where energy-constrained sensors in a wireless sensor network can choose among different distributed coding schemes to encode their data. We propose a framework where the network is described as a graph, with sensors representing the nodes, and where communication and processing costs are associated to edge weights and the coding schemes associated to states of operation. After describing data transitions and edge costs, we show that a shortest-path algorithm can be used to find the optimum network configuration, i.e., the one that leads to the lowest overall energy consumption

A non-orthogonal wavelet-based multiresolution analysis was already provided by scaling and wavelet filters derived from Gegenbauer polynomials. Allowing for odd n (the polynomial order) and a value (a polynomial parameter) within the orthogonality range of such polynomials, scaling and wavelet functions are generated by frequency selective FIR filters. These filters have compact support and generalized linear phase. Special cases of such filter banks include Haar, Legendre, and Chebyshev wavelets. As an improvement, it has been achieved that for specific a values it is possible to reach a filter with flat magnitude frequency response. We obtain a unique closed expression for a value for every n odd value. The main advantages in favor of Gegenbauer filters are their smaller computational effort and a constant group delay, as they are symmetric filters. Potential applications of such wavelets include fault analysis in transmission lines of power systems and image processing

In many practical distributed source coding (DSC) applications correlation information has to be obtained at the encoder in order to determine the encoding rate. Coding efficiency depends strongly on the accuracy of this correlation estimation, which often has to be performed under rate and complexity constraints. In this paper we focus on correlation estimation for wavelet-based DSC. We extend our previously proposed model-based estimation techniques, which provided accurate estimates of bit-plane level correlation under rate constraints, in the simple case where bit-planes are generated from the binary representation of the sources. To extend the model-based approach to wavelet-based DSC, we need to address two issues. Firstly, in order to improve coding efficiency, bit-planes are typically generated by more sophisticated algorithms in wavelet-based DSC (e.g., by deciding on the bitplane scan order based on coefficient "significance"), which makes model-based estimation more challenging. Secondly, certain wavelet subbands may not have enough coefficients for reliable model estimation, so that model-based techniques alone may not be sufficiently accurate. We propose solutions to these problems and, using a DSC-based hyperspectral image system as example, we demonstrate that model-based estimation can lead to efficient system implementation with lower computational and data exchange requirements, and improved parallelism, while incurring only small degradation in coding efficiency.

The wavelet transform has found application in a large range of fields, from image processing to communications. This paper describes the design and implementation of a core for the calculation of the wavelet transform of an incoming signal. This core may be connected to other similar cores to perform higher level wavelet transform. Due to its flexibility, the circuit described in this paper may be inserted in a SoPC, thus building a digital system, which is able to calculate this rather complex operation in real time, using the hardware resources of a low cost FPGA, leaving the results available for the rest of cores present in the SoPC. The data processing results achieved with this core implementation allow the calculation of the wavelet transform even for high speed signals and the possibility of including this core into a SoPC enables higher level operations, such as data compression, pulse detections, etc
