This paper presents a novel method for automatic segmentation of blood vessel in coronary angiographic images. The proposed algorithm composed of two steps, coronary angiogram enhancement process and entropy based thresholding. In the first step, a set of directional basis filters based on dyadic wavelet transform is designed to enhance blood vessels. Gaussian wavelet is used to fix the blood vessel directional information and its associated changes in coronary angiogram and a gradient image is obtained. Secondly the thresholding approach that evaluates 2-D entropy based on gray level gradient co-occurrence matrix is used to segment blood vessel from the background. The result of this method promises the simpleness and flexibility in many image enhancement and segmentation applications.

It is very important to perceptually shape the watermark signal before embedding it into a host image according to the characteristics of the HVS (human vision system) since watermark invisibility is a necessary requirement for a successful watermarking application. Two popular HVS models have been proposed to deal with this problem: DCT-based Watson model and DWT-based PWM (pixel-wise masking) model, which correspond to the DCT-based and DWT-based watermarking techniques, respectively. Even though there is a common belief that the PWM model is better than the Watson model, there have been no studies that compare these two approaches. This paper is devoted to such a comparison. Our results show that the believed superiority of the PWM model relative to the Watson model is not correct and the Watson model indeed outperforms the PWM model. We argue that more accurate masking strategies in the wavelet domain are needed for DWT-based watermarking applications.

Digital forensics has lately become one of the very important applications to identify the characteristics and the originality of the digital devices. This study has focused on analyzing the relationship between digital cameras and the associated images. Digital image processing technology has been applied with data mining method to get images' features. Those features were trained and classified to identify the camera sources from the images. In addition, the identification features were further categorized for improvements, based on the analyses, to enhance the precision rate of the identification. This research also compared not only cameras of different brands, but also those of the same manufacturer with similar models. This research has found that the feature based approach has better performance to distinguish the camera sources among brands. Further findings are discussed and suggested for the potential limit of the identification methods in real applications

Besides perfect reconstruction and linear phase, regularity is a desirable essential property of filter banks for image coding as it is associated with the smoothness of the related wavelet basis. This paper shows how to constrain quaternionic factorizations of eightband linear phase paraunitary filter banks to have the first regularity structurally imposed. The result is not very general but some facts make it notable. Firstly, these systems are a direct extension of the standard eight-point discrete cosine transform (DCT) and this facilitates practical applications. Secondly, the first regularity eliminates the DC leakage which cause visually annoying checkerboard artifact. Finally, our solution offers clear advantages over the known ones as the regularity conditions are formulated directly in terms of quaternionic lattice coefficients. Namely, both regularity and losslessness can be easily preserved regardless of coefficient quantization unavoidable in finite-precision implementations.

Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is an efficient tool for multi-resolution decomposition of signal and image processing applications. During the compression of image using 2D-DWT two filters are used to evaluate a DWT, a highpass and a lowpass filter, with the filter coefficients derived from the wavelet basis function in each dimension. Among all DWTs, the Haar discrete wavelet transform (Haar DWT) is the simplest and orthogonal one. However, a traditional 2D DWT is applied by sequentially performing two 1D operations one along the rows and the other along the columns of a transformed row image. In other words, the column operation cannot be performed until the row operation is completed. There is decrease in performance due to the memory read and write operations involving intermediate result between row and column operations. Due to this reason, we propose the sequential data input to hierarchical algorithm for Haar DWT. With this technique, we can implement a 2D Haar DWT by data rearrangements, achieving the low memory required to implement being of O (N). The most important characteristic of this algorithm is that the computational process can be extended to image of any size taking the advantage of the block processing of image and data input using diagonal scan algorithm

Matching aerial images with map data is an important task in several remote sensing applications such as autonomous navigation, cartography, oceanography. The unique and distinctive shapes of coastlines can be effectively utilized to solve this problem. In this study a completely automatic scheme is proposed to detect coastlines using multi-resolution texture analysis and to match the detected coastlines to a map database. A shape matching method using dynamic programming is used and tested on the satellite images of the western coast of Turkey.

This paper extends our previous work on hyperspectral imagery compression based on distributed source coding (DSC). We apply DSC principles to facilitate efficient parallel encoder implementations with moderate memory requirement. Based on our previously proposed wavelet-based DSC framework, we propose a novel adaptive coding scheme that judiciously combines DSC and intra coding tools, taking into account the source statistics and inter-band correlation, as well as the coding gains and limitations imposed by tools. Bits extracted from wavelet coefficients tend to have different statistics and inter-band correlation at different significance levels and in different wavelet subbands. Therefore, it is non-trivial to determine the optimal coding strategy. Toward this we propose modeling techniques to estimate the performance of DSC/intra coding under different bits extraction scenarios. This model is used to define adaptive coding strategies that can optimally incorporate different bit- extraction techniques with DSC/intra coding tools according to the bit significance levels and wavelet subbands. Experimental results demonstrate that adaptive coding can achieve up to 4dB improvement over a non-adaptive system, and the improved DSC-based system is comparable to some 3D wavelet system in terms of coding performance. While we focus on hyperspectral images in this paper, many of the proposed techniques are applicable to other wavelet- based DSC image and video applications.

In spite of their bad resolution, scintigraphic images are used as an indicator of the functionality of some organs. The drawbacks of this image modality are the bad contrast and resolution of images and the fluctuations due to the Poisson distribution. Instead of increasing the injected dose or increasing the duration exposure of the patient, we propose a method base on image processing to enhance the image quality and decrease fluctuations. The proposed method is based on the adaptive thresholding of the wavelet coefficients combined with the Fisz transform in low count level. Results are considered, by nuclear medicine specialists, interesting with respect to the image quality enhancement while contours and details preservation

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image despeckling is an important problem in the SAR applications. A novel despeckling approach using a local contextual hidden Markov model (LCHMM) in the contourlet domain is presented in this paper. The proposed method can not only use the multiresolution and multidirection characteristics of the contourlet transform, but also exploit the local statistics and capture the intrascale dependencies of the contourlet coefficients by using LCHMM. The experiments in despeckling SAR images show that the proposed method in contrary to other methods can obtain a better trade-off between smoothing the homogeneous areas and keeping the edges and can get better visual effect
