Multiplicative noise is signal dependent and is difficult to be removed without impairing image details. It causes difficulties for many real world imaging applications. Previously, a hypothesis test based wavelet denoising algorithm had been proposed with promising results. In this paper, the algorithm has been further studied by fitting it into the framework of contourlet transform, an emerging two-dimensional technique for imageprocessing and analysis. The developed contourlet denoising algorithm has been evaluated with standard test images, yielding successful results. It has also been demonstrated that the proposed algorithm outperformed the original wavelet based approach.

We present a new multiresolution analysis framework for irregular meshes with attributes based on the lifting scheme. We introduce a surface prediction operator to compute the detail coefficients for the geometry and the attributes of the model. Attribute analysis gives appearance information to complete the geometrical analysis of the model. A set of experimental results are given to show the efficiency of our framework. We present two applications to adaptive visualization and denoising.

In multimedia applications where images are extremely used, the rate control method has a significant role in image encoder performance, computational complexity and hardware implementation. We propose a simple rate control algorithm suitable for the hardware implementation of a JPEG2000 encoder with less computational complexity and area. The proposed algorithm, which is based on exponential modeling of R-D curves, employs distortion instead of slope values. Simulation results show similar performance compared to the full search method, with considerable reduction in hardware resources.

Based on the multiresolution property of the multigrid method, wavelet transform is incorporated into the multigrid phase unwrapping scheme. Preliminary results and analysis are presented. Multiple description coding (MDC) recently appeared as a joint source-channel coding technique specifically designed for real-time multimedia applications over best effort switched packet networks such as the Internet, in order to cope with packet losses due to transmission errors or network congestion. In this paper we compare several redundant wavelet decompositions within the framework of multiple description of scalable video coding. Special attention is paid to the optimal design of the central decoder. Simulation results are provided for motion-compensated filter banks so as to evaluate the efficiency of the central and side decoding strategies. Compared with other techniques, a key factor of the proposed analysed schemes is their reduced redundancy factor.

Texture classification has long been an important research topic in imageprocessing. Classification based on the wavelet transform has become very popular. wavelets are very effective in representing objects with isolated point singularities, but failed to represent line singularities. Recently, a ridgelet transform which deals effectively with line singularities in 2-D is introduced. It allows representing edges and other singularities along lines in a more efficient way. In this paper, the issue of texture classification based on a ridgelet transform has been analyzed. Features are derived from sub-bands of the ridgelet decomposition and are used for classification for a data set containing 20 texture images. Experimental results show that this approach allows to obtain a high degree of success in classification.

Ridgelet transform is a new directional multi-resolution transform and it is more suitable for describing the signals with line or super-plane singularities. Finite ridgelet transform is a discrete orthonormal version of ridgelet transform proposed by Do and Vetterli (2003). However, finite ridgelet transform is only suitable for images of prime-pixels length, which is a limitation of its application in imageprocessing. In this paper, we improve the finite ridgelet algorithm and a new digital implementation of ridgelet transform which is suitable for images of dyadic length is proposed. This method not only keeps the main properties of finite ridgelet but also simplifies the algorithm. We first briefly introduce the concept of ridgelet transform. Then, we illustrate finite ridgelet transform and the new method. Finally, we compare the new method with traditional finite ridgelet transform.

For tracking applications, the estimation of the “true” motion vector is crucial. The Complex Discrete wavelet Transform (CDWT) based motion estimation algorithm developed by Magarey and Kingsbury produced superior results for the estimation of the dense flow field. In this work, the use of the CDWT-based motion estimation algorithm for the vision-based tracking of targets has been evaluated. First, a comparison of the results of the CDWT-based ME algorithm with the results of the Lucas and Kanade's (LK) and Horn and Schunk's (HS) motion estimation algorithms is performed. Second, the tracking performances are compared for the cases of CDWT-based and LK-based flow fields. Lastly, the tracking performance of the proposed tracker is evaluated by using a number of test sequences and is compared to the Correlation and Mean Shift Tracker. It is observed that it can successfully track various different targets and is robust to changes of the target signature.

Many signal and imageprocessingapplications will be more benefited if the transform gives good spectral and temporal resolution in arbitrary regions of the time-frequency plane that is provided by the discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT). In this paper, the architecture for lifting scheme based Daubechies 9/7 wavelet is proposed. The proposed architecture performs both forward and inverse transform. The architecture does not require any extra memory/FIFOs to store the intermediate results. The proposed architecture is verified by performing DWPT for images of size 64times64. The architecture has been described in VHDL at the RTL level and simulated successfully using ModelSim simulation environment
