EEG signals collected non-invasively from the cerebral cortex are often contaminated with signals from eye movement [EOG], which considerably degrades the reliability of extracting proper information from the actual signals. This study attempts a two-step algorithm to obtain an EOG artifact free EEG signal with best performance index. Two types of decomposing methods namely Discrete wavelet Transform (DWT) and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) were used initially to decompose the contaminated signal The resultant signal further undergoes two processes each;first by Canonical Correlation analysis (CCA) technique and the second one by reduced frequency components using threshold level to identify the unwanted frequency components (TH.-FFT). The output signal from each of these two processes are reconstructed to obtain a clean signal Comparison between the reconstructed cleaned signals and the contaminated EEG signal reveal that the reconstructed signal is cleaner when (CCA) technique was used as compared with that of (TH.-FFT). Thus the performance indexes of this experiment for the two methods, measured with RMSD and SDR, indicated that combined DWT, EMD and CCA method outperforms the combined DWT, EMD and TH.-FFT method in elimination of eye movement contamination from EEG signal. The present algorithm gave better performance results compared to other existing methods and hence would be better suited for various offline analyses involving the low frequency bands of EEG signals.

The visual detection of bullet holes in a target image usually can be formulated as a problem of how to exactly locate in an image the isolated and overlapping spots, which are treated as structures without inner detail and texture. In this paper we present a model based on a feedback algorithm to deal with this problem and take full consideration of the gradient information and the various size and background. Experiments show it works well and achieves high reliability in real applications.

Being able to rapidly detect clouds in satellite imagery is critical in terms of increasing mission efficiency of ground observation satellites. In this work, a new approach has been proposed for cloud detection involving the utilisation of low-frequency Discrete wavelet Transform (DWT) components whose sizes are 1/64 of the original image sizes. In the proposed method, several texture features are calculated from the low-frequency DWT components and the cloud pixels are detected by using a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) classifier. The proposed method has been tested on the Göktürk-2 images. Since the utilization of low-frequency components leads to a significant loss in detail; the cloud detection performance have decreased to some extent. Nevertheless the obtained results were found to be sufficient for determining the cloudiness rate at a small margin of error, and at approximately 145× increased processing speed.

We propose a new formulation of directional filter banks (DFBs). By using a non-uniform and non-separable filter bank, a critically sampled multiresolution directional image representation can be obtained efficiently. The resulting DFB yields non-uniform frequency division which is composed of one lowpass channel with a decimation factor of one-fourth and six highpass directional channels with a decimation factor of one-eighth. It overcomes the limited directional selectivity of separable wavelets and the limited resolution of the conventional DFB. The lowpass channel can be used to obtain multiresolution representation by simply re-iterating the same DFB decomposition. On the other hand, the directional subbands can be further refined by simply applying a two-channel DFB at each highpass channel. A simple design method yielding near orthogonal uniform and non-uniform multidimensional filter banks is discussed, and, finally, a numerical experiment is presented to demonstrate the potential of the new image basis.

Matching aerial images with map data is an important task in several remote sensing applications such as autonomous navigation, cartography, oceanography. The unique and distinctive shapes of coastlines can be effectively utilized to solve this problem. In this study a completely automatic scheme is proposed to detect coastlines using multi-resolution texture analysis and to match the detected coastlines to a map database. A shape matching method using dynamic programming is used and tested on the satellite images of the western coast of Turkey.

Reduced-reference (RR) video quality measures aim to predict the perceptual quality of distorted video signals using only partial information about the reference video. Existing RR video quality assessment models are mostly designed and/or trained for specific applications such as lossy compression, where the detectable distortion types are often fixed and limited. Here we propose a novel approach that measures temporal motion smoothness of a video sequence by examining the temporal variations of local phase structures in the complex wavelet transform domain. We show that the proposed measure can detect a wide range of well-known practical distortions, including noise contamination, blurring, line or frame jittering, and frame dropping. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require a costly motion estimation process and has a low RR data rate, making it much easier to be adopted in real-world visual communication applications.

A denoising procedure based on a thresholding function has been integrated into the JPEG2000 part II standard which is designed to support a wide variety of applications, including the compression and transmission of medical images. This standard is based on the discrete wavelet transform using the Daubechies(9,7) biorthogonal wavelet, also named the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau 9/7 wavelet. However, is this the best choice concerning quality at any time? In this work we compared the results from 36 different variations of wavelets compression schemes to explore their difference related to image content and quality. Two groups of well known images of different levels of complexities and content are used to evaluate the relation among fidelity, image content and noise level. The first group is formed by natural images and the second group is formed by synthetic images. They are considered on two different resolutions (128 × 128 and 256 × 256) and with high level of Additive White Gaussian Noise. The performance of each approach is evaluated by means of fidelity, comparing the originals without noise versus the same images after compression/denoising and decompression. The goal is to define which combination present the best and the worst results considering the final visual quality.

In this study, a new handwritten character recognition system able to work for a large-scale data set, faster and have a high recognition rates, is developed. For this purpose this study is implemented within four stages which are pre-processing, feature selection, classification and speedup. Two-dimensional wavelet-based method and the Sobel gradient method are used for the feature extraction process. The classification process is performed with Support Vector Machines (SVMs) using one-against-all method in the classification phase. In the speedup phase of the study, shared memory architecture was used which one of the parallel programming architectures. In this aspect, serial codes of SVM were analyzed and the code blocks which were suitable for parallel working are collimated and then the codes run with a multi-core computer.

This paper presents a research study leading to a robust chaos-based scheme for digital image watermarking applications in the transform domain. The steps undergone include combining, in a repeating process, three performant conventional mathematical transforms of Direct Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete wavelet Transform (DWT) and variants with three different state-of-the-art advanced techniques namely Discrete Curvelet Transform (DCuT), Discrete Radon Transform (DRaT) and Finite Ridgelet Transform (FRT). Results have shown a neat improvements in watermarking imperceptibility and robustness each time especially after including Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) which has enhanced embedding capability as well. Methods evaluation has followed an exhaustive series of performed tests that applied a range of evaluation metrics for imperceptibility. In addition, Robustness of the final scheme has also been confirmed by applying a variety of attacks on the resulting images. Finally, security aspect has also been improved after a comparative implementations of popular four chaotic models namely Arnold Cat Map (ACM), Lorenz Cat Map (LCM), Rossler Cat Map (RCM) and Genesio-Tesi Cat Map (GTCM) respectively producing secure images encryption levels. All Implementations have been validated using a sufficent number of color image from a large dataset.

Noise suppression is an integral part of any image processing task Noise significantly degrades the image quality and hence makes it difficult for the observer to discriminate fine detail of the images especially in diagnostic examinations. Through decades of research, mass articles on image denoising have been proposed The effect of noise in the images can be reduced by using either spatial filtering or transform domain filtering. In transform domain wavelet method provide better denoising while preserving the details of images like edges. The Discrete wavelet Transform (DWT) has some disadvantages that undetermined its application in image processing as lack of shift invariance and poor directional selectivity. In order to overcome these disadvantages Dual Tree Complex wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) is used which provide perfect reconstruction over the traditional wavelet transform It employs 2 real DWTs; the first DWT gives the real part of the transform while second DWT gives the imaginary part. It is nearly shift invariant and directionally selective in two and higher dimensions with limited redundancy. The DTCWT outperforms the DWT for applications like image denoising and enhancement One of the advantages of the DTCWT is that it can be used to implement 2D wavelet transforms that are more selective with respect to orientation than is the 2D DWT. The 2D DTCWT produces twelve sub bands at each scale, each of which are strongly oriented at distinct angles. A Dual Tree Complex wavelet transform based image denoising is proposed which uses generalized cross validation technique The denoising performance for different images using Discrete wavelet Transform and Dual Tree Complex wavelet transform with different thresholding need to be evaluated Evaluation is carried out in terms of various parameters such as Peak signal to Noise Ratio, mean Structural Similarity and Coefficient of Correlation.
