High resolution through-the-wall radar imaging (TTWRI) demands wideband signals and large array apertures. Thus a vast amount of measurements is needed for a detailed reconstruction of the scene of interest. For practical TTWRI systems it is imperative to reduce the number of samples to cut down on hardware cost and/or acquisition time. This can be achieved by employing compressive sensing (CS). Existing approaches imply a point target assumption, which may not hold in practical applications. We apply a novel CS approach for TTWRI using the 2D discrete wavelet transform to sparsify images. In this fashion, we overcome the above stated limitation and are able to deal with extended targets. Experimental results show that high image qualities are obtained, similar to images generated using the full measurement set.

While considerable research have been conducted on age-wise age estimation using skin detection most often with other visual cues, relatively little research has looked closely at the subject. In this paper, we present a new framework for interpreting facial image patterns that can be employed in categorical age estimation. The aim is to propose a novel approach to investigate and implement a child face detection technique that is able to estimate age categorically - adult or child based on a new hybrid feature descriptor. The novel hybrid feature descriptor LIGD (the luminance invariant geometric descriptor) is composed of some low and high level features, which are found to be effective in characterizing the local appearance. In local appearance estimation, chromaticity, texture, and positional information of few facial visual cues can be employed simultaneously. Compared to the results published in a recent work, our proposed approach yields the highest precision and recall, and overall accuracy in recognition.

A method for identifying JPEG 2000 images with different coding parameters, such as DWT-filters, code-block sizes, quantization step sizes, and resolution levels, is presented. The proposed method does not produce false-negative matches regardless of the different coding parameters. Moreover, the proposed method is fast because it uses the number of zero-bit-planes. This number can be extracted from the JPEG 2000 codestream by only parsing the header information. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method for digital cinema applications.

The digital watermarking is a multimedia technology for information hiding which provides the authentication and copyright protection. The digital images are easily exchanged through internet and threaten to some malicious attacks. wavelet based frequency domain watermarking provides the robustness against different attacks. Bit plane slicing scheme of spatial domain watermarking provides lesser computational complexity suitable for real time implementation. We combine advantages of the both the domains for the proposed algorithm. We have developed algorithm for robust and invisible application where we used non blind detection scheme. This approach is also implemented on FPGA. Several software implementations of the watermarking algorithms are available, but very few attempts have been made for hardware implementations. Software based watermarking schemes are more prone to offline attacks due to the delay between image captured and embedding the watermark. Hardware based watermarking provides real time embedding process where watermark is embedded at the same time when image is captured. This is very much useful in applications like real-time broad casting, video authentication and secure camera system for courtroom evidence. The goal of hardware implementation is to achieve low-power, high-performance, real-time, reliable and secure watermarking systems using FPGA.

This article presents hardware architecture of JPEG2000 encoder core, oriented for HD video broadcast and surveillance applications. Thanks to developed efficient 2-D DWT engine that is capable of computing four coefficients per clock cycle, and adopted two EBCOT TIER-1 modules, with smart switching of the channels, the maximum compression speed of 180 Msamples/s at 100 MHz, in lossy mode is achieved. The architecture is implemented in VHDL and synthesised for FPGA devices, and ASIC 0.13 μm CMOS technology. Performance simulations, conducted on a set of natural images and video sequences, have revealed that the encoder is capable of processing 1080p 4:4:4 signal with a speed of 30 frames per second. Additionally, an excellent quality of reconstructed images has been observed, with respect to the reference, software encoder.

At first, this paper is concerned with wavelet-based image denoising using Bayesian technique. In conventional denoising process, the parameters of probability density function (PDF) are usually calculated from the first few moments, mean and variance. In the first part of our work, a new image denoising algorithm based on Pearson Type vii random vectors is proposed. This PDF is used because it allows higher-order moments to be incorporated into the noiseless wavelet coefficients' probabilistic model. One of the cruxes of the Bayesian image denoising algorithms is to estimate the variance of the clean image. Here, maximum a posterior (MAP) approach is employed for not only noiseless wavelet-coefficient estimation but also local observed variance acquisition. For the local observed variance estimation, the selection of noisy wavelet-coefficient model, either a Laplacian or a Gaussian distribution, is based upon the corrupted noise power where Gamma distribution is used as a prior for the variance. Evidently, our selection of prior is motivated by analytical and computational tractability. In our experiments, our proposed method gives promising denoising results with moderate complexity. Eventually, our image denoising method can be simply extended to audio/speech processing by forming matrix representation whose rows are formed by time segments of digital speech waveforms. This way, the use of our image denoising methods can be exploited to improve the performance of various audio/speech tasks, e.g., denoised enhancement of voice activity detection to capture voiced speech, significantly needed for speech coding and voice conversion applications. Moreover, one of the voice abnormality detections, called oropharyngeal dysphagia classification, is also required denoising method to improve the signal quality in elderly patients. We provide simple speech examples to demonstrate the prospects of our techniques.
