The discrete wavelet transform has taken its place at the forefront of research for the development of signal and image processing applications. Hence this paper is proposed on the work of design of hardware for the computation of Floating Point Discrete wavelet Transform using Harr wavelet. The proposed hardware was implemented using VHDL and components were designed at the gate level. This resulted in an easier synthesizable design. The hardware was synthesized using Xilinx Virtex-4 device. This paper gives us an insight into the making of hardware for computation of DWT using a 32 bit Floating Point Unit. Since all the wavelets except Harr wavelet have their coefficients in floating point representation, a 32 bit FPU was incorporated into the proposed hardware. Typically, synthesis tools are not efficient in designing a memory and the proposed hardware was consisting of two 16K X 32 bit RAM's . Hence many problems had been faced and solved during the synthesis of this hardware. © 2010 IEEE.

Recently, writer identification has been studied and it has a wide variety of applications, more specifically in biometric and forensic science. This paper presents the use of texture features in identifying the writer from the handwritten document image. The texture features are extracted based on the co-occurrence histograms of wavelet decomposed images, which capture the information about relationships between each high frequency subband and that in low frequency subband of the transformed image at the corresponding level. The correlation between the subbands at the same resolution exhibits a strong relationship, indicating that this information is significant for characterizing a texture. This scheme is tested on two scripts namely, Kannada and English. The experiments are performed by considering 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 writers at a time. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the texture features in identifying the writer. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper a new scheme based on the wavelet type decomposition- reconstruction is proposed and experimentally verified. Instead of typical filters, i.e., those referring to the Fourier representation, half-band filters based on the discrete trigonometric transforms (DTTs) are used. A comparison with the standard approach has been performed and the differences are indicated. A perfect reconstruction condition is formulated for the considered filtering systems and illustrated with an example. The comparative study is supported by two examples of one level 2D image decomposition. © 2010 Division of signal Processin.

Fingerprint image enhancement is an essential preprocessing step in fingerprint recognition applications. In this paper we introduce an approach that extracts simultaneously orientation and frequency of local ridge in the fingerprint image by Gabor wavelet filter bank and use them in Gabor Filtering of image. Furthermore, we describes a robust approach to fingerprint image enhancement, which is based on integration of Gabor Filters and Directional Median Filter(DMF). In fact, Gaussian-distributed noises are reduced effectively by Gabor Filters and impulse noises by DMF. the proposed DMF not only can finish its original tasks, it can also join broken fingerprint ridges, fill out the holes of fingerprint images, smooth irregular ridges as well as remove some annoying small artifacts between ridges. Experimental results show our method to be superior to those described in the literature. © 2010 IEEE.

Video compression plays an important role in video signal processing, transmission and storage. Since the available bandwidth for transmission is very limited, Multimedia applications such as video conferencing, video on demand, video telephony and remote sensing are not possible without compression. A lot of video compression techniques have been developed and the video signal transmission has followed at data rates below *** transform based motion compensated video codec performs better compression in order to meet the rate and distortion constraint in video transmission for the available bandwidth than the block based techniques, which are followed in standard video transmissions such as H.261 and *** the efficiency of those technique's depends on the way in which it estimates and compensates the object motions in the video sequence. wavelet based embedded image coder is quite attractive in modern multimedia applications. wavelet transform, bit plane coding and other techniques make embedded image coder practical and also provide efficient compression. In this paper, we have proposed a novel video coding using swarm intelligence in dual tree complex wavelet transform for video coding. The 3-D DDWT is an attractive video representation because it isolates motion along different directions in separate subbands. However, it is an over-complete transform with redundancy, which is going to be eliminated by choosing optimal subbands with the help of PSO. The proposed video codec does not require motion compensation and provides better performance than the 3D SPIHT (Embedded type)codec, both objectively and subjectively, and the coder allows full scalability in spatial, temporal and quality dimensions. © 2010 IEEE.

Ultrasound images appearance is characterized by speckle, shadows, signal dropout and low contrast which make them really difficult to process and leads to a very poor signal to noise ratio. Therefore, for main imaging applications, a denoising step is necessary to apply successfully medical imaging algorithms on such images. However, due to speckle statistics, denoising and enhancing edges on these images without inducing additional blurring is a real challenging problem on which usual filters often fail. To deal with such problems, a large number of papers are working on B-mode images considering that the noise is purely multiplicative. Making such an assertion could be misleading, because of internal pre-processing such as log compression which are done in the ultrasound device. To address those questions, we designed a novel filtering method based on 1D Radiofrequency signal. Indeed, since B-mode images are initially composed of 1D signals and since the log compression made by ultrasound devices modifies noise statistics, we decided to filter directly the 1D Radiofrequency signal envelope before log compression and image reconstitution, in order to conserve as much information as possible. A bi-orthogonal wavelet transform is applied to the log transform of each signal and an adaptive 1D split and merge like algorithm is used to denoise wavelet coefficients. Experiments were carried out on synthetic data sets simulated with Field II simulator and results show that our filter outperforms classical speckle filtering methods like Lee, non-linear means or SRAD filters.

Morphological Scene Change Detection (MSCD) is a process typically tasked at detecting relevant changes in a guarded environment for security applications. This can be implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) by a combination of binary differences based around exclusive-OR (XOR) gates, mathematical morphology and a crucial threshold setting. The additional ability to set up the system in virtually any location due to the FPGA makes it ideal for insertion into an autonomous mobile robot for patrol duties. However, security is not the only potential of this robust algorithm. This paper details how such a system can be used for the detection of leaks in piping for use in the process and chemical industries and could be deployed as stated in the above manner. The test substance in this work was water, which was pumped either as a liquid or as low pressure steam through a simple pipe configuration with holes at set points to simulate the leaks. These holes were situated randomly at either the center of a pipe ( in order to simulate an impact to it) or at a joint or corner ( to simulate a failed weld). imagery of the resultant leaks, which were visualised as drips or the accumulation of steam, which where analysed using MATLAB to determine their pixel volume in order to calibrate the trigger for the MSCD. The triggering mechanism is adaptive to make it possible in theory for the type of leak to be determined by the number of pixels in the threshold of the image and a numerical output signal to state which of the leak situations is being observed. The system was designed using the DSP Builder package from Altera so that its graphical nature is easily comprehensible to the non-embedded system designer. Furthermore, all the data from the DSP Builder simulation underwent verification against MATLAB comparisons using the image processing toolbox in order to validate the results.

In this paper the degraded video with blur and noise is enhanced by using an algorithm based on an iterative procedure. In this algorithm at first we estimate the clean data and blur function using Newton optimization method and then the estimation procedure is improved using appropriate denoising methods. These noise reduction techniques are based on local statistics of clean data and blur function. For estimated blur function we use LPA-ICI ( local polynomial approximation - intersection of confidence intervals) method that use an anisotropic window around each point and obtain the enhanced data employing Wiener filter in this local window. Similarly, to improvement the quality of estimated clean video, at first we transform the data to wavelet transform domain and then improve our estimation using maximum a posterior (MAP) estimator and local Laplace prior. This procedure ( initial estimation and improvement of estimation by denoising) is iterated and finally the clean video is obtained. The implementation of this algorithm is slow in MATLAB(1) environment and so it is not suitable for online applications. However, MATLAB has the capability of running functions written in C. The files which hold the source for these functions are called MEX-Files. The MEX functions allow system-specific APIs to be called to extend MATLAB's abilities. So, in this paper to speed up our algorithm, the written code in MATLAB is sectioned and the elapsed time for each section is measured and slow sections ( that use 60% of complete running time) are selected. Then these slow sections are translated to C++ and linked to MATLAB. In fact, the high loads of information in images and processed data in the "for" loops of relevant code, makes MATLAB an unsuitable candidate for writing such programs. The written code for our video deblurring algorithm in MATLAB contains eight "for" loops. These eighth "for" utilize 60% of the total execution time of the entire program and so the runtime shoul

Compared with gray feature, the Gabor feature is more effective for facial image representation. But in practice, the dimension of a Gabor feature is so high that the computation is prohibitively large. In this paper, We use the two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) to reduce the dimension and then replace the original gray feature with the Gabor feature vector of reduced dimension as the front-end input of traditional Isometric Mapping(Isomap) algorithm. The validity of this method can be verified by experimental results. © 2010 IEEE.

Since expertise elicited from past resolved cases plays an important role in medical application and images acquired from various cases have a great contribution to diagnosis of the abnormalities, Content based medical image retrieval has become an active research area for many scientists, In this article we proposed a new framework to retrieve visually similar images from a large database, in which visual relevance is regarded as much as the semantic category similarity, we used optimized wavelet transform as the multi-resolution analysis of the images and extracted various statistical SGLDM features from different resolutions then after reducing feature space we used error correcting codes in order to untwist the existing multiclass visual problem introduced in preceding parts of the article, we implemented proposed algorithm on the 1000 mammograms provided by the DDSM database which consist of 2500 studies and their annotations provided by specialists. © 2010 IEEE.
