In optical phase shift profilometry, parallel fringe patterns are projected onto an object and the deformed fringes are captured using a digital camera. It is of particular interest because it enables reconstruction of the 3D shape of the object using just a few image captures, which facilitates real time applications. However, when using the approach in real life environment, it is noticed that the noise in the captured images can greatly affect the reconstruction quality. In this paper, we firstly analyze why the noisy fringe images can best be analyzed using the oriented 2D dual tree complex wavelet transform. We then suggest an effective yet simple method for enhancing the noisy fringe images. Both the simulation and experiment results show that the new approach can give good performance in reconstruction with fringe images even at high noise level.

Problems of multi-dimensional signal enhancement, segmentation, feature extraction and components classification is essential in many engineering and biomedical applications. The paper is devoted to the use of watershed transform and wavelet transform for MR image components detection and discussion of over-segmentation problems. The goal of the paper is in (i) analysis of image de-noising, (ii) discussion of image enhancement, and (iii) multi-resolutional approach application for reduction of over-segmentation problems. Proposed algorithms include the use of wavelet transform and gradient methods in the preprocessing stage and application of the watershed transform for enhanced images. Resulting algorithms are verified for simulated images and applied for a selected MR biomedical images containing different structures.

Recently, writer identification has been studied and it has a wide variety of applications, more specifically in biometric and forensic science. This paper presents the use of texture features in identifying the writer from the handwritten document image. The texture features are extracted based on the co-occurrence histograms of wavelet decomposed images, which capture the information about relationships between each high frequency subband and that in low frequency subband of the transformed image at the corresponding level. The correlation between the subbands at the same resolution exhibits a strong relationship, indicating that this information is significant for characterizing a texture. This scheme is tested on two scripts namely, Kannada and English. The experiments are performed by considering 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 writers at a time. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the texture features in identifying the writer.

In this work, a rotational invariant image template matching method based on log-polar transform and phase only correlation is presented. The method is composed of two stages. While applying the 2nd Hanning window is formed the first stage, several steps, for phase-based rotational image template matching constitutes the second stage. MATLAB is used for computer simulations. We cropped various image templates for matching purposes. We then rotated that template images with 15, 30 45, 60 and 75 degrees respectively and we saved them. Thus, we obtained totally 60 images for 10 different template images. We finally obtained 93.33% matching accuracy.

With the rise of mobile media devices, resizing an image or video to fit a screen of arbitrary size has become an important topic. In general, arbitrary resizing does not preserve the original image aspect ratio, and hence, can introduce significant visual distortion. Content-aware retargeting methods have been proposed to preserve salient features of an image or video ([1][3][5][6]) even under arbitrary changing of the aspect ratio. While these are useful tools, little attention has been given to the development of an efficient retargeting-driven representation of images. Such representation, for example, can lead to efficient distribution of media destined for retargeting at a variety of devices with different aspect ratios. We propose a new framework, seamlets, which utilizes the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to perform content-aware arbitrary media resizing. In essence, seamlets provide an efficient multi-resolution representation for retargeting applications. The seamlet transform elegantly generalizes the DWT and seam carving, which is an intriguing retargeting method. The result is a new image framework, seamlets, that inherits the benefits of retargeting and wavelets.

Low bit rate applications, such as cell phone and wireless transmission of images, require compression schemes that could keep acceptable levels of visual quality of the medium. In this paper a multi layer compression scheme is presented which is intended to preserve the texture details of an image at low bit rates. The first layer uses wavelet transform for extraction of textures. Then in the second layer the strength of the contourlet transform in preservation of textures is employed to compress the highlighted textures of the image. The proposed method is compared with a number of low bit rate methods and proved to be superior to these methods.

Video compression plays an important role in video signal processing, transmission and storage. Since the available bandwidth for transmission is very limited, Multimedia applications such as video conferencing, video on demand, video telephony and remote sensing are not possible without compression. A lot of video compression techniques have been developed and the video signal transmission has followed at data rates below 64kbps. wavelet transform based motion compensated video codec performs better compression in order to meet the rate and distortion constraint in video transmission for the available bandwidth than the block based techniques, which are followed in standard video transmissions such as H.261 and H.263. But the efficiency of those technique's depends on the way in which it estimates and compensates the object motions in the video sequence. wavelet based embedded image coder is quite attractive in modern multimedia applications. wavelet transform, bit plane coding and other techniques make embedded image coder practical and also provide efficient compression. In this paper, we have proposed a novel video coding using swarm intelligence in dual tree complex wavelet transform for video coding. The 3-D DDWT is an attractive video representation because it isolates motion along different directions in separate subbands. However, it is an over-complete transform with redundancy, which is going to be eliminated by choosing optimal subbands with the help of PSO. The proposed video codec does not require motion compensation and provides better performance than the 3D SPIHT (Embedded type)codec, both objectively and subjectively, and the coder allows full scalability in spatial, temporal and quality dimensions.

The ancient documents have a major importance in the history of every people and every nation. These documents involve important information that many people need. As a consequence, it is necessary to preserve these documents in order to build a numerical library in the service of the public. Therefore, the necessity of digitizing these documents permits the simultaneous access to the same documents and provides the possibility of the reproduction of these documents existing most of the time in just one example. This task is considered as an important step in the research domain. In fact, many researches have been invested for the processing, compression, segmentation and indexation of these documents. Nevertheless, with a numerical form, there is a threat of hacking, stocking, copying, modifying and finally diffusing these documents in an illegal way without losing their quality. As a consequence, we face the problem of losing the intellectual property because of the lack of methods that concern the protection of data. In order to prevent these frauds, watermarking represents a promising method to protect these images. In this context, our work makes part of protecting ancient documents essentially. In this paper, we have proposed the method of watermarking ancient documents. This method is based on the wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) and it provides a good robustness which can face different attacks like signal processing (noise, filter and compression) and noticeable signature invisibility.
