With recent advancements in industrial robots, educating students in new technologies and preparing them for the future is imperative. However, access to industrial robots for teaching poses challenges, such as the high cost of acquiring these robots, the safety of the operator and the robot, and complicated training material. This paper proposes two low-cost platforms built using open-source tools like Robot Operating System (ROS) and its latest version ROS 2 to help students learn and test algorithms on remotely connected industrial robots. Universal Robotics (UR5) arm and a custom mobile rover were deployed in different life-size testbeds, a greenhouse, and a warehouse to create an Autonomous Agricultural Harvester System (AAHS) and an Autonomous Warehouse Management System (AWMS). These platforms were deployed for a period of 7 months and were tested for their efficacy with 1,433 and 1,312 students, respectively. The hardware used in AAHS and AWMS was controlled remotely for 160 and 355 hours, respectively, by students over a period of 3 months. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

There are certain persons who cannot utilize computers due to medical conditions. The design of eyeball controlling is extremely beneficial, especially for those with disabilities and natural inputs in the future. Furthermore, putting the control system in place enables that, without the aid of a second person, they could operate the computers. This system is highly useful for physically handicapped people who will control the mouse cursor with their heads and eyes. The camera is used in this project to capture the image and video of eyeball movement. First, it determines the pupil’s middle spot of the eye. Then, a change in pupil spot results in a different action in the cursor, and then the pupil detection process is carried out using the free and open-source OpenCV library for image processing and computer vision. It can be used to identify objects, faces, and other features in images and videos. In this process, we connect to the webcam and command the mouse cursor to move in accordance with eyeball movement, after which each image from the camera is extracted. Then transmit it to the library called OpenCV to find the exact location of the eye center position. After detecting the center location of the eye, we can extract the coordinates (x and y) of the eyeball from a Python library named OpenCV and we can direct the cursor to move to the eyeball’s specified x and y coordinates. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Bio-signals play a very critical role in modern medicine, especially for paralyzed patients. The development of Brain-computer Interface (BCI) systems, which allows direct brain-to-external device contact, is made possible by these signals, creating new ways for medical intervention and rehabilitation. Using these bio-signals, modern medicine has made great strides toward developing intelligent devices that enhance the quality of life for people who are paralyzed. These include improved mobility, supported communication devices, and environmental control. In this survey, we thoroughly assess the latest BCI-based smart devices and their medical applications. By finding and examining current methods, technologies, and practical uses, we seek to showcase the effectiveness and potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in providing new ways to treat paralysis. Currently, bio-signal-based control systems have been continuously used rapidly in biomedical devices and assistive robots to enhance and improve the quality of life for disabled and elderly individuals. Among these, electromyograph (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and electrooculography (EOG) bio-signals are highly used for improving modern technologies. The primary objectives of this paper are to detail the techniques used in Brain-computer interface-based smart devices and their applications, used in healthcare. Additionally, this paper provides an overview of applications controlled through these bio-signals and discusses the research challenges in developing these control systems.

The development of a smart irrigation system is critical in addressing water conservation and enhancing agri-cultural practices. The design and implementation of a control system aimed at regulating water delivery to plants based on critical factors such as soil moisture, weather conditions and specific plant requirements is presented in this paper. The system assimilates various control methodologies, including PID control, root locus analysis, frequency response analysis, state space representation, and digital control techniques. For modeling, simulation and testing of the system, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of its performance, Simulink is used. The proposed smart irrigation system demonstrates substantial improvements in water use efficiency and plant health by dynamically adjusting irrigation schedules in response to real-time environmental data. To further promote this technology in sustainable agriculture, future enhancements and real-world applications are discussed.

The revolution of growing urban population and complicity of the city’s vast amounts of operations has resulted in the establishment of a smart city—one that utilizes the current state-of-the-art technology to enhance the quality of life of the consumers and streamline the use of its resources. However, the smart city faces significant security, privacy, and trust issues due to numerous interconnected systems handling vast amounts of sensitive data. Blockchains developed as a decentralized, transparent, and immutable technology, can solve these issues and revolutionize the vast number of applications of contemporary smart cities. This paper outlines how blockchains can form a basis for the secure and effective deployment of multiple smart city solutions, covering a diverse set of applications, including data management, energy trading, transportation, waste handling, and digital identity. It explains the advantages that blockchains offer, which include increased security, transparency, efficiency, and decentralized decision-making. At the same time, the paper highlights the existing challenges and considerations with the adoption of blockchain for smart cities, such as lack of scalability and regulation, insufficient interoperability, high energy consumption, and low public awareness. In the context of digital transformation in the occupational health and safety sector, this research focuses on the efficacy of virtual reality training tools in ensuring workplace safety during maintenance activities. A comprehensive methodology, including focus groups and workshops, is utilized to define a study protocol and evaluate the proposed virtual reality solution. The study suggests that immersive virtual reality training, which integrates the Skill-Rule-Knowledge framework, has the potential to enhance workers’ ability to manage unforeseen situations. The excess growth of digital information on the Internet and the excessive use by many users have created an issue of information over-load, where the data remains unfiltered and uncategorized. Many large corporations, like Deezer, JioSaavn, Spotify, and Wynk music streaming apps, have included recommendation algorithms to assess possible consumer preferences and propose suitable products to the user. However, it can be challenging to recommend an item to a new user with minimal or no interaction with the system. This problem is popularly known as the new user cold start problem, which refers to the issue of recommending music to users with little or no listening history. Deep learning-based approaches have recently shown great potential in addressing this challenge. This paper aims to extensively analyze the latest deep learning techniques to tackle the challenge of the new user cold start issue in the music recommendation field. Additionally, the paper explores the potential of using supplementary data such as user profiles and lyrics to enhance the performance of deep learning-based methods. Finally, we critically analyze the current state-of-the-art and identify open research directions for future work. The global pursuit of sustainable energy solutions has led to the exploration of innovative technologies aimed at revolutionizing energy management and distribution. This paper presents integration of Blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in decentralizing energy management with a focal point on transmitting power data from small-scale renewable power stations to a central power plant. IoT devices strategically monitor energy production from renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines, solar panels, and microgrids, enabling real-time data analysis to maximize efficiency. These transactions, which are automated by smart contracts, ensure trust. Interoperability, data security, and user interfaces are all covered as the technical architecture required for seamless integration in this paper. It is important that regulations need to be changed to make room for creative energy solutions. This framework highlights sustainability, encourages energy independence, and lessens dependency on centralized power by supporting renewable energy sources. Fire fighter machine is generally used for controlling the fire. The basic design for the machine is made up of only Arduino UNO and its sensors. The paper is presenting an extensive design, development, and evaluation phases for an automated fire fighting vehicle (AFFV) powered by Arduino technology. The AFFV is equipped with intelligent control systems and sensor networks to autonomously navigate through challenging terrains and detect fires in hazardous environments. Leveraging Arduino microcontrollers, the vehicle integrates various sensors including infrared and ultrasonic sensors for real-time environmental monitoring and obstacle detection. A robust chassis design enables the AFFV to maneuver through confined spaces commonly encountered in firefighting scenarios. The vehicle’s fire suppression mechanism utilizes water discharge systems and thermal imaging sensors to detect and extinguish fires promptly, reducing risks to human lives. Simulated firefighting scenarios were conducted to evaluate the AFFV’s performance in responsiveness, accuracy, and reliability. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the Arduino-powered AFFV in enhancing firefighting capabilities and mitigating the impact of fire incidents. This study contributes to the advancement of autonomous firefighting technologies, offering a promising solution to combat fires efficiently while ensuring the safety of firefighting personnel. future work will focus on refining the AFFV design and exploring additional functionalities to address evolving firefighting challenges. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
