The flexibility potential of electric vehicles, heat pumps, photovoltaics, and storage systems allocated at customer premises raises attention to grid-serving and market-serving control applications. However, control applications vary as the kind of flexibility differs due to the complexity of interactions behind the meter, the actors involved, conflict of interests, regulatory requirements, and the number of systems to integrate. Consequently, the validation of applications across all phases of development reveals the potential bottlenecks of the application before deployment. This work presents the use cases for distribution system control applications and how they can be validated in a hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment. The validation environment covers the systems of a distribution system operator and its upstream grid operator, virtual field devices, a real-time grid simulation, the meter operator including the operation of an advanced metering infrastructure, as well as applications from market participants like aggregators. As a proof of concept, two use cases are selected to demonstrate how grid operator coordination and customer behaviour can be validated. Thereafter, it will be implied how the validation environment is suitable for future use cases, such as the coordination of grid-serving and market-serving control applications.

The production throughputs of the food industry grow continuously due to the ever-increasing customer demand. At the same time, food safety measures become increasingly strict. To this end, efficient quality control is essential to ensure quality and safety for consumers, and to guarantee efficient and valuable production for industrial stakeholders. computer vision is often applied to this end, usually integrated with other Industry 4.0 technologies and process automation. computer vision applications in quality control, indeed, can greatly enhance supply chain management in the food industry by maintaining consistent product quality and minimizing waste. In this paper, a keyword-based analysis is carried out to assess the main research trends and topics in the field of computer vision for quality control in the food industry. The bibliometric analysis aims to assess the main applications of the technology in terms of processes and products and the main issues targeted by the analyses. Finally, the results of the bibliometric investigation allow to identify and highlight topics that present potential for future investigations in the field. © 2024 The Authors. Surveillance drones equipped with video transmission capabilities play a crucial role in modern security systems, with the integration of OpenCV for object detection marking a significant advancement. This study evaluates the detecting accuracy by varying the distance between the drone and the target object, addressing gaps in current research through a detailed practical insight. This research explores key aspects of drone-based video surveillance, including object detecting, tracking and real-time following, aiming to enhance understanding and methodology in computer Vision (CV) applications with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The Simulation of a surveillance drone system in Gazebo simulator within the ROS2 framework. The drone is programmed to dynamically follow and track a mobile robot, enabling systematic analysis of the object detection algorithm's performance. The findings contribute to advancing the reliability and effectiveness of drone-based video surveillance systems for future innovations in security and monitoring applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Gas/odor sensors are integral components of sensor systems used in diverse applications such as food quality control, environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, odor profiling, industrial safety, agriculture, explosives detection, wine tasting, pharmaceutical quality control, and toxic gas detection. Traditional approaches in this domain of gas/odor sensing technologies face challenges related to accuracy, cross-sensitivity, and drifted real-time performance. The integration of deep learning techniques with gas sensors has shown promise in overcoming these limitations. Moreover, this amalgamation of gas sensing and deep learning strategies enables accurate identification of gases/odors, handling complex patterns, and leading optimal consumption of resources. In this paper, an overview of advancements in deep learning-enabled gas sensing has been presented that focused on methodologies, sensor types, and applications. This review also highlights the state-of-the-art techniques and identifies gaps for future directions for research. © 2025 IEEE.

Ridesharing systems have become an important part of urban transportation. At the same time, electric vehicle (EV) adoption is also growing at a fast pace as an eco-friendly and sustainable transportation option. To operate a ridesharing system with EV fleets, scheduling an EV fleet to serve passenger requests requires consideration of both the requests, and the available charge and potential future charge requirements of the EVs. In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling EVs by a ridesharing operator, and propose four algorithms that schedule passenger requests while taking into consideration charging requirements of the EVs. Detailed simulation results are presented on a real world data set to show that the algorithms perform well. Copyright © 2025 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Multimodal human-computer interaction in interventional radiology and surgery: a systematic literature review

PurposeAs technology advances, more research dedicated to medical interactive systems emphasizes the integration of touchless and multimodal interaction (MMI). Particularly in surgical and interventional settings, this approach is advantageous because it maintains sterility and promotes a natural interaction. Past reviews have focused on investigating MMI in terms of technology and interaction with robots. However, none has put particular emphasis on analyzing these kind of interactions for surgical and interventional *** databases were included in the query to search for relevant publications within the past 10 years. After identification, two screening steps followed which included eligibility criteria. A forward/backward search was added to identify more relevant publications. The analysis incorporated the clustering of references in terms of addressed medical field, input and output modalities, and challenges regarding the development and *** sample of 31 references was obtained (16 journal articles, 15 conference papers). MMI was predominantly developed for laparoscopy and radiology and interaction with image viewers. The majority implemented two input modalities, with voice-hand interaction being the most common combination-voice for discrete and hand for continuous navigation tasks. The application of gaze, body, and facial control is minimal, primarily because of ergonomic concerns. Feedback was included in 81% publications, of which visual cues were most often *** work systematically reviews MMI for surgical and interventional scenarios over the past decade. In future research endeavors, we propose an enhanced focus on conducting in-depth analyses of the considered use cases and the application of standardized evaluation methods. Moreover, insights from various sectors, including but not limited to the gaming sector, should be exploited.

Audits contribute to the trustworthiness of Learning Analytics (LA) systems that integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and may be legally required in the future. We argue that the efficacy of an audit depends on the auditability of the audited system. Therefore, systems need to be designed with auditability in mind. We present a framework for assessing the auditability of AI-integrating systems in education that consists of three parts: (1) verifiable claims about the validity, utility and ethics of the system, (2) evidence on subjects (data, models, or the system) in different types (documentation, raw sources and logs) to back or refute claims, (3) means to validate evidence such as technical APIs, monitoring tools, or explainable AI principles must be accessible to auditors. We apply the framework to assess the auditability of the Learning Management System Moodle, which supports an AI integrating dropout prediction system. Moodle's auditability is limited by incomplete documentation, insufficient monitoring capabilities, and a lack of available test data. This article investigates and discusses potential energy scenarios and strategies for the Emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the 2030 energy generation mix. An energy mix optimization model is used to analyse the projected 2030 generation mix scenario for Dubai, to explore howdifferent sources of renewable energy can change the generation mix in 2030 and the opportunities and challenges associated with it. With several large ongoing renewable energy projects in Dubai, there will be a high share of renewables in the future energy generation mix of Dubai by 2030. Considering these projects in the energy mix model, the time-varying generation cost of electricity for 2030 is calculated. Then, it is shown how demand flexibility can be utilized to handle such a time-varying cost profile, employing an energy model of a commercial building. A model-predictive control (MPC) technique is applied to optimize the energy performance of a building according to the predicted cost and weather conditions. It should be noted that the article is based on the author's assumptions of potential future energy scenarios, and it does not represent official policies and cost estimates.

In order to create spaces that are secure, cozy, energy-efficient, and visually beautiful, smart buildings are becoming more and more sophisticated cyber-physical systems. However, as functional complexity, financial concerns, and market demands increase, traditional design methodologies are becoming less effective. Current framework's plan and activity have been totally changed by the presentation of automated smart building, which ensures expanded security, better inhabitant solace, and energy effectiveness. With an emphasis on MATLAB-based reproductions, this study offers a careful assessment of the plan interaction and improvement procedures for computerizing savvy structures. The study delineates how MATLAB makes it simpler to depict, reproduce, and investigate savvy building frameworks with certainty. Through the mix of numerous advancements, like sensors, regulators, and correspondence conventions, the research shows the turn of events and check of a mechanized smart building framework. The intelligent building's building automation system prioritizes a humanized interface and uses a combination of mechanical, electrical, and fire control systems, access control systems, and parking management systems to give building occupants a convenient and comfortable place to live and work. The discoveries show prominent additions in functional viability, natural adaptability, and energy utilization. The conventional heuristic and ad hoc design paradigms are becoming ineffective and inadequate for the future due to cost, the requirement to handle growing functional complexity, adaptability, supply chain fragmentation, and time-to-market pressure. © 2025 IEEE.

With the continuous development of soccer robot technology, target tracking control has become one of its core technologies. Traditional target tracking methods often exhibit poor robustness and flexibility when facing complex and dynamic environments. To address this issue, this paper proposes a target tracking control method for soccer robots based on fuzzy algorithms. By introducing a fuzzy logic controller, this study effectively handles the uncertainty of targets and the dynamic changes of the environment. First, the kinematic model of the soccer robot is analyzed, and a fuzzy controller suitable for target tracking requirements is designed. Second, the proposed method is validated through experiments and simulations, demonstrating superior performance in terms of tracking accuracy, response speed, and robustness compared to traditional PID control and model predictive control methods. Finally, the limitations of the method are discussed, and directions for future improvements are proposed. The research results show that the target tracking control method based on fuzzy algorithms has strong adaptability and high control performance, providing an effective solution for soccer robots to track targets in dynamic environments. © 2025 IEEE.
