Lossless image compression via predictive coding of discrete Radon projections

This paper investigates predictive coding methods to compress images represented in the Radon domain as a set of projections. Both the correlation within and between discrete Radon projections at similar angles can be exploited to achieve lossless compression, The discrete Radon projections investigated here are those used to define the Mojette transform first presented by Guedon et al. [Psychovisual image coding via an exact discrete Radon transform, in: T.W. Lance (Ed.), Proceedings of the visual communications AND image processing (VCIP), May 1995, Taipei, Taiwan, pp. 562-572]. This work is further to the preliminary investigation presented by Autrusseau et al. [Lossless compression based on a discrete and exact radon transform: a preliminary study, in: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal processing (ICASSP), vol. II, May 2006, Toulouse, France, pp. 425-428]. The I D Mojette projections are re-arranged as two dimensional images, thus allowing the use of 2D image compression techniques onto the projections. Besides the compression capabilities, the Mojette transforms brings an interesting property: a tunable redundancy. As the Mojette transform is able to both compress and add redundancy, the proposed method can be viewed as a joint lossless source-channel coding technique for images. This study deals with the effects of lossy image compression in the visual analysis of remotely sensed images. The experiments consider two factors with interaction: the type of landscape and the degree of lossy compression. Three landscapes and two areas for each landscape (with different homogeneity) have been selected. For every of the six study area, color 1:5000 orthoimages have been submitted to a JPEG2000 lossy compression algorithm at five different compression ratios. The image of every area and compression ratio has been submitted to on-screen photographic interpretation, generating 30 polygon layers. Maps obtained using compressed images with a high compression ratio present high structural differences regarding to maps obtained with the original images. On the other hand, the compression of 20% obtains values only slightly different from those of the original photographic interpretation, but these differences seem owed to the subjectivity of the photographic interpretation. Therefore, this compression ratio seems to be the optimum since it implies an important reduction of the image size without determining changes neither in the topological variables of the generated vector nor in the obtained thematic quality.

Quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned images using distributed coding

In this paper we address visual communications via print-and-scan channels from an information-theoretic point of view as communications with side information that targets quality enhancement of visual data at the output of this type of channels. The solution to this problem addresses important aspects of multimedia data processing and management. A practical approach to side information communications for printed documents based on Wyner-Ziv and Gray setups is analyzed in the paper that assumes two separated communications channels where an appropriate distributed coding should be elaborated. The printing channel is considered to be a direct visual channel for images ("analog" channel with degradations). The "digital channel" is considered to be an appropriate auxiliary channel exploited to communicate the information exploited for quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned image. We demonstrate both theoretically and practically how one can benefit from this sort of "distributed paper communications". (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

随着便携领域不断推陈出新更多的、新型的低功耗、高性能的硬件被应用到核数据采集处理系统当中。为了将核数据采集处理设备小型化、智能化、一体化,完成大量数据的采集、实时处理,并通过特殊算法而完成复杂运算的目的,采用以智能操作系统为系统平台的ARM9微处理器核心构架,为此提供一种可能。本论文来源于国家863计划课题“航空伽玛能谱勘查系统研发”(编号:2006AAA207)和中国地质大调查项目“野外X射线荧光测井技术研究”(工作项目编号1212010560204)。设计以ARM9为硬件平台,以Windows ***操作系统为软件开发环境,采用eMbedded visual C++ 4.0语言,开发了核数据接收与处理系统。该系统成功移植了操作系统,并通过智能系统的触摸操作,能够完成与上、下位机通信模式选择、核数据安全存储、复杂数学算法和结果保存等功能。主要研究成果如下: (?)在剖析以920T核心的S3C2410系统硬件的基础上,构建了核信号数据处理系统的ARM9硬件和PB软件平台,并保持ARM9硬件不变,对操作系统的进行了Windows CE4.2到CE5.0升级移植,提升整体系统性能。 (?)搭建PB(platform builder)移植平台,配合特征BSP板级支持包,合理设计与分配Windows ***系统内核资源,成功的编译、链接了适合本设计中硬件适用OS镜像.bin文件,导出软件开发包SDK。 (?)使用EVC4.0开发编写基于Windows ***的数据通信模块、谱线显示模块、数据处理模块、数据存储模块、结果分析模块编写,并结果保存到4G扩展存储区,其中独立线程的高速串口通信模块实现了高达115200Kbps传送速度,10M的网络通信模块提供更高速率数据传输,为整机扩展升级奠定基础。 (?)各模块进行接口统一、整合、封装,友好的操作界面可以通过以点击触摸屏来代替键盘操作,界面美观、操作简便。

Reversible integer-to-integer mapping of N-point orthonormal block transforms

Reversible integer-to-integer (I2I) mapping of orthonormal transforms are vital for developing lossless coding with scalable decoding functionalities. A general framework for reversible I2I mapping of N-point, where N is a positive integer power of 2, orthonormal block transforms using recursive factorization of such transform matrices and the lifting scheme is presented. Designs include the discrete cosine transform (DCT) that maps integers to integers (I2I-DCT), the discrete sine transform that maps integers to integers (I2I-DST) and the Walsh-Hadamard transform that maps integer to integers (I2I-WHT). The main significant feature of these designs is that the transform coefficients are normalized according to the conventional scaling factors, which is vital for embedded coding, while preserving the integer-to-integer mapping and perfect reconstruction. This makes these transforms usable in both lossless and lossy image coding, especially in scalable lossless coding. These generic N-point design of the above transforms enables evaluating the effect of block sizes of such transforms in lossless coding. The performance is evaluated in terms of lossless image and video coding, quality scalable decoding, complexity and lifting step rounding effects. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Subcellular organelles are commonly analyzed using 2-D fluorescent microscopy. However, 3-D reconstruction and analysis of organelle topology in a high-throughput manner promises to result in a better understanding of cellular systems. We developed image analysis methods for automated quantitative analysis of peroxisome shapes. The methods employ 3-D image stacks obtained by confocal microscopy. There are three fundamental phases: image preprocessing and segmentation, 3-D reconstruction, and automated quantification of peroxisome topology in 3-D using shape descriptors. The algorithms are shown to produce results that can be used to classify objects of different topologies, and to enable visual studies of peroxisomes in 3-D.

The recent advances in image based rendering (IBR) have pioneered freely determining the viewing position and angle in a scene from multi-view video. Remembering that a person could also record a personal video for this arbitrarily selected view and misuse this content, it is apparent that copyright and copy protection problems also exist and should be solved for IBR applications, as well. In our recent work (Alper Koz, 2006), we propose a watermarking method, which embeds the watermark pattern into every frame of multi-view video and extracts this watermark from a rendered image, generated by the nearest-interpolation based light-field rendering (LFR) and watermark detection is achieved for the cases in which the virtual camera could be arbitrarily located on the camera plane only. This paper presents an extension to the previous formulation for the rendered images, which are generated by using bilinear interpolation, namely the most attractive and promising interpolation method in LFR-based applications. Moreover, the location of the virtual camera could be completely arbitrary in this new formulation. The results show that the watermark could be extracted successfully for LFR via bilinear interpolation for any imagery camera location and rotation, as long as the visual quality of the rendered image is preserved.

We present robust global motion estimation by MDPE algorithm for video stabilization. MDPE algorithm is a robust model fitting method, which has high breakdown point. We evaluate the performance of global motion estimation by robust model fitting methods, M-estimator, RANSAC and MDPE. An improvement of the MDPE for video stabilization is also presented. Finally, the video stabilization based on our robust global motion estimation is examined.
