This paper presents a disparity estimation algorithm that combines three different kinds of techniques: Gabor transform, variational refinement and region-based affine parameter estimation for disparity calculation. The Gabor transform is implemented using a set of quadrature-pair filters for estimating the two-dimensional correspondences between the two images without the calibration information, and the estimated coarse disparity maps are applied to a variational refinement process which involves solving a set of partial differential equations (PDEs). Then the refined disparity values are used with the image segmentation information so that the parameters of affine transforms for the correspondence of each region can be calculated by singular value decomposition (SVD), and these affine parameters can be applied in turn to bring more refined disparity maps. © 2006 SPIE-IS&T.

Multistage integration of visual information in the brain allows people to respond quickly to most significant stimuli while preserving the ability to recognize small details in the image. Implementation of this principle in technical systems can lead to more efficient processing procedures. The multistage approach to image processing, described in this paper, comprises both main types of cortical multistage convergence. One of these types occurs within each visual pathway and the other between the pathways. This approach maps input images into a flexible hierarchy which reflects the complexity of the image data. The procedures of temporal image decomposition and hierarchy formation are described in mathematical terms. The multistage system highlights spatial regularities, which are passed through a number of transformational levels to generate a coded representation of the image which encapsulates, in a computer manner, structure on different hierarchical levels in the image. At each processing stage a single output result is computed to allow a very quick response from the system. The result is represented as an activity pattern, which can be compared with previously computed patterns on the basis of the closest match.

Subcellular organelles are commonly analyzed using 2-D fluorescent microscopy. However, 3-D reconstruction and analysis of organelle topology in a high-throughput manner promises to result in a better understanding of cellular systems. We developed image analysis methods for automated quantitative analysis of peroxisome shapes. The methods employ 3-D image stacks obtained by confocal microscopy. There are three fundamental phases: image preprocessing and segmentation, 3-D reconstruction, and automated quantification of peroxisome topology in 3-D using shape descriptors. The algorithms are shown to produce results that can be used to classify objects of different topologies, and to enable visual studies of peroxisomes in 3-D.

You can't miss the influence of computer graphics on filmmaking this *** computer-animated films like Cars and Over the Hedge come quickly to mind, along with theannual visual effects extravaganzas like Poseidon and Mission: Impossible Ⅲ. Even those that lackapparent computer-generated imagery were most likely edited and sound-mixed using computers. But fewaudience members give much thought to how and where the technologies behind these films weredeveloped. In the early days of computer graphics in film (the early 1980s), much of the technologywas developed directly by the studios. Notably, Lucasfilm, George Lucas's privately held productioncompany, created its own research division, developing many of the core technologies still usedthroughout the industry. That division was later spun off as Pixar Animation Studios, whileLucasfilm retained many of the technologies for the fledgling computer graphics department of itsown Industrial Light and Magic. As the industry has evolved, however, academic research has played anever-larger role in filmmakers' use of the technology.

With the 600th anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's birth in 2000 A. D., we should look back at the historical significance of letterpress technology and take a step forward into the new age of color imaging. Currently, digital-imaging technology plays a leading role in visual communications, but meets severe challenges to satisfy human vision. It is essential to consider what human vision "sees" in order to capture, store, transmit, and reproduce a truly realistic image just as human vision. Advances not only in high-precision and high-definition digital media but also in intelligent image-processing technologies will be helpful in producing more aesthetic and pleasant imaging. This paper briefly introduces "intelligent" processing towards that goal by using region-based spatially variant, and scene-referred approaches.

Repairing co-segmentation results by consistency evaluation shows the improvement of the co-segmentation performance. However, the existing co-segmentation refinement methods focus on color feature, while the mid-level features based repairing, such as shape, is ignored. In this paper, we propose a new shape based co-segmentation refinement method. An edge map based segment completeness evaluation and a shape based segment consistency evaluation are firstly proposed. Then, we use the initial segments and their evaluation scores to refine each result by employing the object proposals. By repeating such two evaluation and refinement steps, final refined results are obtained. Compared with traditional methods where only the bad segment is repaired, all segments are simultaneously evaluated and refined in an iteration process in our method to achieve better results. We verify our method based on Icoseg dataset. The results show larger IOU values than the original results.

Video compression takes the advent of spatial, temporal and psycho-visual redundancies. These redundancies can be compensated efficiently by transform, motion estimation/compensation and quantization respectively. The existing video coding standards (MPEG) use block based Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). In the DCT the input image needs to be blocked. So correlation across the block boundaries is not eliminated resulting in noticeable and annoying blocking artifacts. This is overcome by using wavelets. For better performance in compression, filters used in wavelet transforms should have the property of orthogonality, symmetry, short support and higher approximation order. Due to implementation constraints scalar wavelets do not satisfy all these properties simultaneously. Also compression scheme based on wavelets is slow. A New class of wavelets called 'Multiwavelets' which possess more than one scaling filters overcomes this problem. The objective of this paper is to develop and propose an efficient video compression scheme which provides better quality, high compression and also faster. This is achieved by using Multiwavelets for transform, Kite Cross Diamond Search (KCDS) Algorithm for Block matching and 'Novel Scheme' for quantization. Novel scheme is a combination of Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees algorithm (SPIHT) and Set Partitioning in Embedded Block Coding (SPECK). Hence the name Hybrid coding.

High efficiency video coding (HEVC) defines 35 prediction modes in its intra prediction stage to signal the direction information of residual blocks. Traditionally, separable two-dimension (2-D) transforms (integer DCT and DST) are utilized in a similar manner as in the previous H.264/AVC standards. However, such 2-D transforms cannot yield the best energy compaction for a 2-D directional source where the dominating directional information is other than the horizontal or vertical one. In order to overcome this drawback, we build an elliptical model with directionality and design some non separable transforms based on the Karhunen-Loeve transform in this paper. Specifically, we derive a non-separable transform in closed-form for each intra-prediction mode and replace the default transform in HEVC. Simulation results reveal that 1.7% and 2.0% on average and up to 7.7% and 8.1% BD-rate reduction can be achieved for luma and chroma component, respectively. In the meantime, the test results show that both the encoding time and decoding time increase only about 5%.

Sharpness, one of the most effective factors in video quality assessment, usually dominates the first impression of the representation of the compressed video or image signals. In this paper, a new sharpness metric is presented. Without the original video sequence, this metric evaluates the level of sharpness of a compressed video sequence based on the presence of high frequency signals components. Also, an attention module and several human visual factors are included in order to make the measurement results more correlated to human perception. Finally, psychovisual experiments show high correlation between the metric prediction and subjective ranking of video sharpness. © 2006 IEEE.

Segment propagation transfers object priors among images, which is an important prior generation manner in image segmentation. The existing propagation methods focus on object foreground propagation, while the detailed part propagation is deficiency, which is caused by the challenges that not only the multiple part regions, but also their relationships need to be transferred. In this paper, a part propagation method is proposed. Two level propagations such as object level propagation, and part level propagation are successively used for the part propagation. The object level propagation is to transfer global shape information among images, which is formulated as graph matching based edge fragments matching problem, with dynamic programming solution. The part level propagation is to transfer the more detailed part labels, which is formulated as pixel level structure matching problem, and is efficiently solved by traditional dense pixel matching methods. The proposed method is verified on 15 challenging classes selected from PASCAL 2010 dataset, Bird dataset and Cat-Dog dataset. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
