It presents a hybrid-level texture image boundary detection algorithm inspired from human visual system (HVS). The proposed algorithm integrates three important visual primitives: luminance, texture, and color into a functional system. The paper focuses on relevant fundamental researches on HVS and systematic integration to investigate the task of texture boundary detection thoroughly. It employs the encoding form in HVS with systematic integration to build up a complete algorithm for texture boundary detection. Color images are firstly decomposed into three opponent axes and the 1st-and 2 nd order features are extracted by a Gaussian filter and Gabor filters. With the proposed adaptive weights selecting mechanism, the hybrid-order boundary can be obtained. Among extensive tests, boundaries between uniform textures can be detected successfully and accurately. For textures that are non-uniform or non-regular, the results also reflect some meaningful properties which are consistent to human visual sensation. In addition to satisfying testing results, processing employed in this algorithm is very simple and intuitive with only few assumptions and no training procedure involved. Compared with the present researches, the proposed algorithm has a good application potential. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a progressive multiresolution human visual system and statistically based image-coding scheme. The proposed coding scheme decorrelates the input image into a number of subbands using a lifting based wavelet transform and employs a novel statistically-based coding algorithm to code the coefficients in the detail subbands. Perceptual weights are applied to regulate the threshold value of each detail subband that is required in the coding process. The baseband coefficients are losslessly coded. The coded subbands are used for progressive image transmission. To evaluate the performance of the coding scheme, it was applied to a number of test images with and without perceptual weights. The results indicate significant improvement in both subjective and objective quality of the reconstructed images when the perceptual weights are employed. The performance of the new progressive image codec was also compared to JPEG and JPEG2000. The results show that the proposed computationally efficient coding scheme outperforms both coding standards at low compression ratios, while offering satisfactory performance at higher compression ratios. The application of the codec to progressive image transmission is also investigated on a series of test images.

A real-time visual processing system based on a vision chip that aggregates per pixel digital processing circuitry is presented. The system Supports the authors' latest vision chip and achieves high-speed, high-performance visual processing using an implementation that is small yet highly expandable and versatile. The main feature of the system is that the image capture function is programmable, with the operation of the internal pixel A-D conversion controlled from software at high time resolutions. The performance of the system is evaluated by application to basic visual processing and measurement systems, and examples of applications of the enhanced image capture function are presented. Texts represent an important class of information in our daily lives. This paper studies the problem of super-resolution (SR) of texts, namely reconstructing high-resolution texts from low-resolution video captured by handheld cameras. Such type of video is called nonideal due to uncontrolled imaging condition, unknown point spread function and inevitable distortion caused by compression algorithms. Motivated by the different consideration in SR from mosaicing, we investigate the error accumulation in homography-based registration of multi-view images. We advocate the nonuniform interpolation approach towards SR that can achieve resolution scalability at a low computational cost and study the issues of phase consistency and uncertainty that are difficult to be addressed under the conventional framework of treating SR as an inverse problem. We also present a nonlinear diffusion aided blind deconvolution technique for simultaneous suppression of compression artifacts and enhancement of textual information. The performance of the proposed SR-of-texts technique is demonstrated by extensive experiments with challenging real-world sequences. © 2006 SPIE-IS&T.

The training database was one of the critical element in our speech to facial animation conversion system. This system was developed as a communication aid for deaf people. The specific database was constructed from audio and visual records of professional lip-speakers. The standardized MPE -4 system was used to animate the talking head model. The trained neural net is able to calculate with acceptable error the principal component weights of feature points from the speech frames. The feature point coordinates are, calculated from PC weights. The whole system can be implemented in mobile phones. Deaf persons were able to recognize about 50 of words from the speech driven animation in the final test. http://***/stamp/***?arnumber=4127510

In an error-prone transmission environment, error concealment is an effective technique to reconstruct the damaged visual content. Due to large variations of image characteristics, different concealment approaches are necessary to accommodate the different nature of the lost image content. In this paper, we address this issue and propose using classification to integrate the state-of-the-art error concealment techniques. The proposed approach takes advantage of multiple concealment algorithms and adaptively selects the suitable algorithm for each damaged image area. With growing awareness that the design of sender and receiver systems should be jointly considered for efficient and reliable multimedia communications, we proposed a set of classification-based block concealment schemes, including receiver-side classification, sender-side attachment, and sender-side embedding. Our experimental results provide extensive performance comparisons and demonstrate that the proposed classification-based error concealment approaches outperform the conventional approaches. For automatic image annotation, a method based on rough sets with visual keys is proposed. Using rough set theory the method constructs decision rules about each visual key used for image indexing and about keywords from training set of already annotated images. Then target image is annotated according to constructed decision rules about visual keys which the target image is indexed by. The method is evaluated with training sets of 900 images and with test sets of 100 images on 1,000 manually annotated images in COREL database. Experiments show that recall rates tend to rise easily compared with precision rates on image retrieval with query-by-keywords

Robust visual tracking is a challenging task due to factors motion blur, fast motion, partial occlusion and illumination variation. Existing tracking algorithms represent a target candidate by templates or a linear combination of them with some constraints such as sparse coding. While the high computational cost restricts the tracking speed with sparse constraint since many trivial templates are introduced. Due to affecting by complicated appearance variations, the relationship between a target candidate and the corresponding target templates is not linear. Maybe it is nonlinear or complex. In this paper, we present a kernelized target representation model with sparsity constraint for visual tracking. Namely, a target candidate is represented by a nonlinear combination of templates with sparsity constraint. The proposed appearance model have the advantages of sparse coding and kernel method, which is robust to outliers and represents a target candidate in a high feature space. A novel tracker is proposed upon the presented appearance model. Superior experimental results are achieved against state-of-the-art trackers on some challenging sequences. © 2019 IEEE.
