visual cryptography is based on cryptography where n images are encoded in a way that only the human visual system can decrypt the hidden message without any cryptographic computations when all shares are stacked together. This paper presents an improved algorithm based on Chang's and Yu visual cryptography scheme for hiding a colored image into multiple colored cover images. This scheme achieves lossless recovery and reduces the noise in the cover images without adding any computational complexity

The word "multimedia" is commonly heard nowadays. The essential meaning of this word encompasses a broad range of contents. However, it is indisputable that information processing from now on will focus on visual information such as video and images, which are intuitively easy for us to understand and which carry a great deal of information. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an image labeling technique for supporting image retrieval oil the Web by focusing on the relationship between images on Web pages and key sentences within related text areas and assigning labels to images based on these key sentences. A method of encoding digital medical mammograms is presented in this paper. Based on the JPEG2000 coding framework and embedded with an advanced perceptual distortion measure, the proposed coder identifies and removes visually insignificant/irrelevant information, so as to achieve perceptually lossless quality. Compared with the state-of-the-art JPEG compliant LOCO lossless coder and JPEG2000 lossless coder, current results have shown compression ratio gains in bit-rate without any loss of visual fidelity

Perceptually lossless medical image coding is an alternative for compressing medical images. It provides a solution to the challenge of delivering clinically critical information in the shortest time possible. In this paper, an investigation of the robustness of the perceptually lossless image coder is carried out by applying bilinear, biquadratic and bicubic standard and centered B-spline interpolation filters. In order to evaluate the visual performance, a subjective assessment was conducted consisting of 30 medical images and 6 image processing experts. Here, the perceptually lossless medical image coder was compared to the state-of-the-art JPEG-LS compliant LOCO and NLOCO image coders. Current results have shown that overall, there were no perceivable differences of statistical significance when the medical images were enlarged by a factor of 2

With the 600th anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's birth in 2000 A.D., we should look back at the historical significance of letterpress technology and take a step forward into the new age of color imaging. Currently, digital-imaging technology plays a leading role in visual communications, but meets severe challenges to satisfy human vision. It is essential to consider what human vision "sees" in order to capture, store, transmit, and reproduce a truly realistic image just as human vision. Advances not only in high-precision and high-definition digital media but also in intelligent image-processing technologies will be helpful in producing more aesthetic and pleasant imaging. This paper briefly introduces "intelligent" processing towards that goal by using region-based spatially variant, and scene-referred approaches.

The puzzle assembly problem has many application areas such as restoration and reconstruction of archeological findings, repairing of broken objects, solving jigsaw type puzzles, molecular docking problem, etc. The puzzle pieces usually include not only geometrical shape information but also visual information such as texture, color, and continuity of lines. This paper presents a new approach to the puzzle assembly problem that is based on using textural features and geometrical constraints. The texture of a band outside the border of pieces is predicted by inpainting and texture synthesis methods. Feature values are derived from these original and predicted images of pieces. An affinity measure of corresponding pieces is defined and alignment of the puzzle pieces is carried out using an FFT based image registration technique. The optimization of total affinity gives the best assembly of puzzle. Experimental results are presented on real and artificial data sets

In this paper, a new filter, which can be used at the removal of impulsive noise in digital images, has been introduced. The impulsive noise suppression success of the proposed filter has been tested on the Tiger and Peppers test images which were corrupted by impulsive noise at various noise densities ranging from 20% to 80% with an increment step of 20% and the performance of the proposed filter has been compared with the performance of 5 of the filters that were introduced in the literature and are highly appreciated. The simulation results show that the proposed filter achieves noise suppression and detail preservation very well even when the images are highly distorted and the restoration performance of the proposed filter is higher than those of the comparison filters aspect of both visual perception and image quantitative measures.

Contrast is a measure of the variation in intensity or gray value in a specified region of an image. The region can be most or all of the image, giving rise to a global concept of contrast. The region might, on the other hand, be a small window in which case the concept of contrast is a locally defined expression. In this work, we introduce a nonlinear local contrast enhancement method. This method utilizes the Munsell value scale which is based upon human visual perception. Use of the Munsell value scale allows for the partitioning of the gray scale into ten discrete subintervals. A contrast enhancement function then thresholds the gray values in a subinterval in a smooth manner about a locally computed quantity called the mean edge gray value. By enhancing the contrast in this way the original shades of gray are preserved tuned to human perception

A fuzzy complement edge operator has been developed based on the Yager involutive fuzzy complements. The proposed edge operator is validated with a recently available fuzzy edge operator on the basis of the results of the well-known Canny edge operator. The edge operator has been tested with test images of size 256x256 and found to be superior with larger values of edge pixels and better visual quality in edge images.
