The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project, currently underway, requires a camera mated to a 1.3 meter Cassegrain telescope that will simultaneously image the J, H and Ks spectral bands onto three separate NICMOS3 HgCdTe detector arrays. Dichroic beamsplitters allow the three FPA's to view the same field simultaneously. This paper reviews the development of this camera, presents a detailed analysis of the optical design, and discusses the techniques used to align the instrument and evaluate its performance. The low irradiance of astronomical sources, combined with background limited performance of the detectors, mandated a reimaging configuration and the enclosure of the camera optics within the cold volume. Correcting chromatic aberrations, and minimizing ghost images were additional challenges imposed by program requirements. The key to achieving high performance was found to be the selection of lens materials. The final F/3.5 optical design uses fifteen CaF2 elements and four Infrasil elements in an all-spherical configuration. The design is diffraction limited over the full format in the Ks spectral band, and is nearly so in the J and H bands. The tolerance environment is benign, making the design well suited for use in a cryogenic environment. A single channel prototype has been built and extensively field tested at the 50-inch telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Each channel in the multi-spectral camera uses the same optical design successfully demonstrated in the prototype. currently, the first of two three-channel cameras is undergoing lab tests for image quality and channel registration.

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) have found their acceptance in lens design as an additional tool to refractive and reflective elements. They are especially powerful for applications in the infrared spectrum, because many of the materials, suitable for transmission in this region, lend themselves exceptionally well to the correction of chromatic aberration. The phase profile of the grating superimposed onto the base surface of an IR lens is relatively coarse. This makes it economically advantageous to apply the single point diamond-turning process to the direct generation of such phase profiles. Different ways have been used to describe the profile of a DOE, which have in some cases led to costly misunderstandings. To provide some clarification and suggest a form of standardization for the specifications call-out in manufacturing documents is the primary purpose of this paper. Additional comments are being presented as guidelines and for better understanding of the advantages and limitations for applications of diffractive optical elements in general, and of diamond-turned elements in particular.

Recently the laser microbeam instrument has been used for wider applications in biological science and medicine. A key problem of the laser microbeam instrument is designing the laser focusing system for getting a focal spot size of less than 1 micrometer. This paper presents a new laser focusing system which is composed of a spatial filter and an 80× focusing objective lens. The 80× focusing objective lens was designed as a double reflective sphere type. Using this focusing system, the laser microbeam instrument has gotten a focal spot size of less than 0.5 - 1 micrometer. The focal spot size depends on the pinhole diaphragm diameter of the spatial filter. Different pinhole diaphragm diameters could produce different focal spots that are given in the end of this paper.

We present a novel method for producing arbitrary valued, binary phase-only modulation from a commercially available ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator (FLCSLM) used in conjunction with simple polarization components. Three such stages can be cascaded together in an instrument capable of producing up to eight discrete, equally spaced levels of phase modulation. By using 128 by 128 pixel FLCSLMs a reconfigurable, pixellated, eight-level, optical phase modulator has been constructed which we refer to here as a programmable phase transformer (PPT). We report on the near diffraction limited performance of such an instrument when stopped down to 64 by 64 pixels in producing simple diffraction patterns and when used to generate asymmetric spot arrays in the Fourier plane of a lens. We also discuss the limitations of the current system and the projected improvements that will result from current and future developments in device technology and modulation schemes.

The incorporation of abnormal dispersion liquids into an optical design can result in significant performance advantages. However, the large thermal coefficient of refractive index which is common to all liquids (dn/dT) can complicate the athermalization of these designs. One method is to use two different liquids to form both positive and negative liquid lens elements which balance each other thermally while maintaining color correction. The success of this approach is dependent on the proper selection of materials, and on a detailed knowledge of the wavelength dependence of the refractive index thermal coefficients. The thermal dependence of refractive index and dispersion in the visible spectral region for a number of liquids was investigated. A correlation between the refractive index thermal coefficient (dn/dT) and abnormal dispersion was found to exist in a majority of liquids. The optical property measurements were made at the Vavilov State optical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia in collaboration with the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory, Palo Alto, California.

Early technology learning for 0.25 μm lithography should confirm predictions of tools and processes needed for printing these small image sizes. Improvements are felt to be needed in reticle critical dimension (CD) control, stepper overlay, lens design, and resists for imaging 0.25 μm. Etch technology is also tested for substrate as well as organic ARLs at these line sizes. This paper will present results from efforts to produce 0.25 μm poly, 0.30 μm contacts/vias, and 0.30 μm metal images on a device of realistic topography applications. Poly patterning has been improved by using off axis illumination but the process window is still small. There is a trade off between focus latitude and isolated to dense bias when using annular illumination. While organic ARLs have improved imaging CD control, there is a corresponding loss in CD control during ARL etch. Effects of ARL thickness variation over topography will also cause CD variations when etching to clear the thicker areas. Poly etch itself also contributes to the CD uniformity variations. At the contact masking level the wafer has a fairly planar oxide surface but even with a chemical mechanical polish the oxide thickness will vary due to the underlying topography. Contact patterning studies will include sensitivities of contact imaged CDs to variations in film stack thicknesses and reflectivities. Process windows will be shown for several film stacks with and without ARC for different resist thicknesses. The relationship between oxide thickness and contact CDs will be shown for contacts at 0.30 μm. For metal etch, results will be shown for insitu and dedicated ARL etch tools using various over-etch conditions. The relationship between the resist thickness required for the current ARL and metal etch selectivity and litho patterning capabilities will be discussed. Results will be shown for metal patterns post imaging, ARL etch, and metal etch at 0.30 μm.

Using the caustic merit function for plane waves incident upon a singlet lens, a comparison between the optical performance of the lens using an axial gradient index with spherical surfaces or aspheric surfaces with constant index material has been investigated. Results indicate that the use of an inhomogeneous medium for the lens material is more effective in the controlling aberrations than the use of aspheric surfaces for a similar lens.

Due to increasing environmental limitations on the use of certain raw materials used to make optical glasses, there is now an economic desire to minimize the number of glasses used in lens design. This paper presents the results of a study to create a suggested universal catalogue that contains the minimum number of glasses needed to satisfy most possible lens designs. A nearly symmetric double Gauss lens is used in the glass selection process. As part of this study, the relationship between the error function and the number of glasses chosen is studied, and in addition, a glass range study is also carried out. Three different lens libraries were studied using the global optimization method and the most frequently chosen glasses were then compiled into the suggested universal glass catalogue. A suggested universal glass catalogue constructed from this study is presented.

It is well known and described in any geometrical optics textbook that the axial as well as the magnification chromatic aberration may be corrected in a system formed by a pair of thin lenses separated by a certain distance, using only one type of glass. However, it is not so well known that these aberrations may be also corrected in a single thick lens.
