This paper presents a methodology for designing an athermalised dual field of view zoom lens in long wave infrared (8 mu m - 12 mu m) spectral band by using the benefits of paraxial optics. By using this design methodology the opticaldesigner can develop many types of complex optical systems in a straightforward way. The key feature of this design methodology relies on utilization of paraxial optics for defining the initial positions of the optical elements. The opticaldesign is based on moving a single lens for changing the optical system's FOV thereby reducing the number of moving parts and simplifying the assembly procedure of the system. The opticaldesign begins with optimization process using paraxial optics. Then the opticaldesign using paraxial optics is used as a template for designing the final optical system by lens material selection for compensating the shift in system's focus due to thermal effects and lens thickness tuning.

In this research, an optical integrated module including a liquid-filled lens, a flexible sensor membrane and a self-adjusted optical compensation component was designed. We studied the optical relationship (which is called compensation function) between the liquid-filled lens and the sensor membrane to make the system has good optical characters. According to compensation function, this module compensates the optical character between lens and sensor membrane to obtain a clear image by adjusting the internal pressure and volume of the liquid in the liquid filled optical system. For a single lensoptical system, the curvy sensor membrane has better performance than flat type sensor in off optical axis due to Petzval surface is curved. An optical experiment was set up to measure the performance of the module to prove the idea, and the results show that the module achieves the desired effect.

The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) is part of the science instrumentation for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The FGS is required to operate at 37 K and provide the data needed to facilitate fine pointing and attitude stabilization necessary to meet the requirements of the mission's science and engineering operations. We describe here the selection of the proper opticaldesign form to meet requirements and its relative merits. The FGS has progressed with the successful completion of several key design reviews. Shock waves passing through a metal sample can produce ejecta particulates at a metal-vacuum interface. Holography records particle size distributions by using a high-power, short-pulse laser to freeze particle motion. The sizes of the ejecta particles are recorded using an in-line Fraunhofer holography technique. Because the holographic plate would be destroyed in an energetic environment, a high-resolution lens has been designed to relay the scattered and unscattered light to a safe environment where the interference fringes are recorded on film. These interference fringes allow particles to be reconstructed within a 12-mm-diameter, 5-mm-thick volume. To achieve resolution down to 0.5 mu m, both a high-resolution optical relay lens and ultraviolet laser (UV) light were implemented. The design and assembly of a nine-element lens that achieves > 2000 lp/mm resolution and operates at f/0.89 will be described. To set up this lens system, a doublet lens is temporarily attached that enables operation with 532-nm laser light and 1100 lp/mm resolution. Thus, the setup and alignment are performed with green light, but the dynamic recording is done with UV light. During setup, the 532-nm beam provides enough focus shift to accommodate the placement of a resolution target outside the ejecta volume;this resolution target does not interfere with the calibrated wires and pegs surrounding the ejecta volume. A television microscope archives images of resolution patterns that prove that the calibration wires, interference filter, holographic plate, and relay lenses are in their correct positions. Part of this lens is under vacuum, at the point where the laser illumination passes through a focus. Alignment and tolerancing of this high-resolution lens will be presented, and resolution variation through the 5-mm depth of field will be discussed.
