The production and viewing of panoramic scenes have fascinated people for over a millennium beginning with the camera obscura. With the advent of photography in the mid-1800s, techniques were developed to create panoramic scenes far larger than could be realized by a single camera. Making a panoramic scene from two or more images taken using a film camera was found to be challenging. various advanced techniques for making panoramic images were developed during the 20(th) century and required specialized cameras and film processing. In recent years, digital cameras and powerful software programs have become readily available to aid in making panoramic imagery although often strange artifacts appears in the composite image. This is generally due to improperly locating the rotation axis of the camera. Interestingly, there is significant argument about where the axis of rotation should be for making proper panoramic imagery. The most common "answer" is the rotation axis should be about the second or rear nodal point, which will be shown in this paper to be incorrect. A second "answer" is to rotate the camera about its optical center. This is also incorrect;however, what actually constitutes the optical center of a lens and its applications will be briefly discussed. Examples of correctly and incorrectly produced panoramic image will be presented.

Shock waves passing through a metal sample can produce ejecta particulates at a metal-vacuum interface. Holography records particle size distributions by using a high-power, short-pulse laser to freeze particle motion. The sizes of the ejecta particles are recorded using an in-line Fraunhofer holography technique. Because the holographic plate would be destroyed in an energetic environment, a high-resolution lens has been designed to relay the scattered and unscattered light to a safe environment where the interference fringes are recorded on film. These interference fringes allow particles to be reconstructed within a 12-mm-diameter, 5-mm-thick volume. To achieve resolution down to 0.5 mu m, both a high-resolution optical relay lens and ultraviolet laser (Uv) light were implemented. The design and assembly of a nine-element lens that achieves > 2000 lp/mm resolution and operates at f/0.89 will be described. To set up this lens system, a doublet lens is temporarily attached that enables operation with 532-nm laser light and 1100 lp/mm resolution. Thus, the setup and alignment are performed with green light, but the dynamic recording is done with Uv light. During setup, the 532-nm beam provides enough focus shift to accommodate the placement of a resolution target outside the ejecta volume;this resolution target does not interfere with the calibrated wires and pegs surrounding the ejecta volume. A television microscope archives images of resolution patterns that prove that the calibration wires, interference filter, holographic plate, and relay lenses are in their correct positions. Part of this lens is under vacuum, at the point where the laser illumination passes through a focus. Alignment and tolerancing of this high-resolution lens will be presented, and resolution variation through the 5-mm depth of field will be discussed.

The paper presents design and principle of operation of a passive IR detector of large detection range. Significant virtue of the described PIR detector is highly efficient detection of very slowly moving or crawling people. High signal-to-noise ratio was obtained by using larger number of pyroelectric sensors or by increasing number of detection zones (channels). Larger number of pyroelectric sensors forces development of a complex optical system. The presented optical system of PIR detector consists of one lens (germanium or amtir) and mirror concentrators. The optical system ensures continuity of detection zones (no "blind" area between particular detection zones). Original electronic system for PIR detector was described in which direct current amplifiers of a signal from pyroelectric sensors were applied. Electronic system automatically reduces a voltage drift from pyroelectric sensors, thus significantly decreases low limit frequency of a conduction band of amplification channel. Together with a fulfillment of this condition, low-frequency noises enhancement is observed and next detector sensitivity diminishes. To ensure large detection ranges, a new method of signals analysis was applied. PIR detector has been equipped with a channel of RS 485 standard data transmission. For registration of measurement results, special software was developed for detector diagnostics allowing registration of signals from particular detection zones. The investigation results for various ranges of PIR detector were presented. The signals from PIR detector were shown which were caused by crawling people being at the distance of 140 meters and walking, running people being at the distance more than 200 meters. © 2008 SPIE.

In this paper, we have proposed, fabricated and characterized a parallel electron beam micro-column with single-stranded carbon nanotube (CNT) filed emitters. The integrated micro-column consists of a self-aligned CNT field emitter array (FEA), and a multi-layered electrostatic Si focusing lens array. In our design, the emitters, gate and electrostatic lens array are electrically isolated, and each source can be controlled individually. Electron emission performance of the fabricated CNT/Si emitter was characterized. The best turn-on fields, defined as the field required to generate an emission current of 1 nA, were approximately 6 v. When applying a gate voltage of 100 v, a 110 nA anode current is measured. It is seen that CNT/Si emitter showed low threshold voltage; however, the emission current fluctuation was high during high voltage operation.

The new combined optical pick-up head for recording and playback of information on DvD and BD format discs was developed. The same objective is used for both channels. It consists of the objective lens and Holographic optical Element. In this work we present the main results of the studies of the possibility to manufacture the HOE included in objective of BD/DvD combined optical pick-up head in the dependence on objective lens glass type.

A refractive astigmatic lens is employed to generate a focus error signal (FES) for servo control in general optical pickup. In this paper, a diffractive optical element (DOE) is designed to implement optical functions of astigmatic focusing for a MEMS-based miniature optical pickup at 650nm wavelength. We present a diffractive astigmatic lens with its internal zones and external zones quantized into four, two phase levels, respectively based on fabrication consideration. The optical simulation based on scalar diffraction theory shows the efficiency of this quantized lens for astigmatic focusing and a comparison of the FES in the optical pickup system has been plotted.

Studies on adaptive lenses, which are formed of two transparent elastic surfaces and have a transparent liquid medium between them, have focused mostly on the characterization, analysis and optical performance of the proposed lenses. No attention, however, has been given to the mechanical design that would allow the conception of a user-friendly functional mounting that is adaptable to conventional optical systems. This work, therefore, presents the design and manufacturing processes of the mounting for a 20 mm diameter biconvex adaptive lens. It also presents an analysis of the membranes used as elastic surfaces and the images formation of the proposed lens.

A compact zoom lens design for cell phone is presented. A three groups lens system with five lens element is designed for cell phone camera with 3M pixels and 2.5 similar to 3X optical zoom. The first lens is a negative lens with a concave surface facing the object so that, when used for a long focal length, the rear principle plane is moved forwards to shorten the total length of the lens. A positive lens group composed of three lens elements is arranged at the second lens group. By control the optical power of the second lens group, the distortion can be reduced and also shortens the moving distance of the second lens group while zooming. The fifth lens in the third lens group is a positive lens to control the incident angle entering the photosensitive element. It is used for focusing when the object distance has changed.

This research proposes a newly developed method to high zoom lens for mobile phone use, which the overall length is restricted in mobile phone size acceptable. Generally speaking, the optical design with liquid lens might be more complicated in optimization than traditional optics;not only because aspherical coefficient in liquid lens element is difficult to be defined and measured, but also because efficient optics layout needs more efforts to study in the near future. The paper mainly utilizes liquid lens in order to short total length;two liquid lens elements must be included. Besides consider total length, Lateral aberration also is very important. Lateral aberration will play a significant role in the Modulation Transfer function (MTF), so, the optical design will be able to arise very big, and that the many kinds of chromatics aberration with two groups of liquid lens. Using Digital Signal Processing technology principal factor why this also is.

We propose a novel method to correct the spherical and coma aberration using a hybrid element (refractive-diffractive). The refractive surface is used to correct the coma, we obtain this condition curving the second principal plane and centred it on the axial point image. The diffractive element is used to correct the spherical aberration using an exact ray trace and the diffractive coefficients as variables. The optimization routine is no required. This method can be used for any conjugates position.
