This paper presents a new idea for the optimization of an initial lens structure type from an opticallens database on the basis of introducing opticallens database (OLDB) and computer- aided opticaldesign (CAOD) systems. Using image-quality target parameters as conditional search parameters of optimization of initial lens structure type from database, and evaluating selected lens quality with surface relative aperture (h/r), the authors were able to obtain a good effectiveness in practice.

We present a purely mechanical means of producing highly concentric spherical lenses at the endfaces of optical fibers. The production process has two stages. First, conical lenses are produced in a grinding process that ensures excellent concentricity. Then, the conical lenses are transformed to spherical lenses using a novel process called loose abrasive blasting. The cone grinding is carried out on a microgrinding machine, which has a sophisticated control system that enables the production of precision conical lenses. The blasting is carried out on a diamond blasting machine. Plots showing automatic centering performance of the microgrinding machine and scanning electron microscopy images of the conical and spherical lenses are presented. Several common impediments to successful lensdesign can be removed by application of new techniques. These involve using information that has long been calculated during the design process, but then discarded. Problems so addressed include the nuisance of discovering ray failures in the starting configuration, and that of tolerance desensitization, among others.

This study presents the design and analysis of a lens with a variable focal length, which we will call an adaptive lens. This lens is formed of two transparent elastic surfaces with a transparent liquid medium between them. The mechanical design of the lens considers the variation of liquid pressure between the surfaces. This causes changes in curvature radii and in the axial thickness, generating variations in the focal length of the lens. An analysis is given of changes in lens power with respect to changes in pressure. Finally, a model of the human eye is presented using this adaptive lens as crystalline.

An ultra-fast focal reducer design originally intended for use with spherical primary mirrors (published in opticalengineering, February, 2003), has been adapted for use as a retro-fit for existing telescopes of similar to2m pupil diameter that have aspheric mirrors. The focal reducer has only one aspheric surface, located at the aperture stop, and can provide speeds up to f/0.75 while maintaining a wide field with pixel-limited resolution and a broad spectral passband. Examples have been computed for Ritchie-Chretien, Dall-Kirkham and Cassegrain systems, and for use at the prime focus of mirrors with non-zero conic constants.

An original plastic-lens array molded integrally as one block having a function of forming a unit-magnification erect image has been developed. The lens array consists of eight lens devices. The lens device has a roof prism, a reflecting v-groove, and a pair of convex-lens surfaces. A prototype of the lens arrays are arranged side by side. Thickness of the lens array is 4.5 mm, distance between object and image planes is 14.4 mm, array pitch is 1.3 mm, and the effective imaging region is 220 mm. The average modulation transfer function (MTF) at 41 p/mm of the lens array is 76% in the row direction (Y-direction) and 80% in the direction (X-direction) normal to Y-direction. The average F/NO in line-scanning is 1.8. The average irradience unevenness in line-scanning is 17%. The focal depth is +/- 0.6 mm in the area with the MTF being 60% or more. With this prototype a high-resolution image was attained. So, the lens arrays can be applied to imaging devices for use in a compact facsimile, image scanner, LED printer, and so on.

Using the concept of matrix theory for lensdesign, a triplet lens can be replaced by a singlet lens which has an equivalent system matrix without changing its optical performance. Then, using third order Siedel's first aberration coefficient of the singlet lens is equal to zero, and the focal length and the physical length of the triplet lens are kept constant as constraints, an algebraic technique for optimizing a triplet lens is derived. Results show that this new optimizing technique is more effective than other conventional techniques for optimizing a triplet lens in the case of plane waves.
